Do not ask me to remember
Don’t try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you’re with me
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand

I’m confused beyond your concept
I’m sad and sick and lost
All I know is that I need you
To be with me at all cost

Do not lose your patience with me
Do not scold or curse or cry
I can’t help the way I’m acting
I can’t be different though I try

Just remember that I need you
That the best of me is gone
Please don’t fail to stand beside me
Love me till my life is gone

C. LENORE BIDDELL

July 26, 1923 – May 15, 2020
The family of Constance Lenore Alvina Biddell are sad to announce her passing on Friday, May 15, 2020 at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at the age of 96.
Lenore leaves to cherish her memory one son, Paul Biddell, six granddaughters, one grandson and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
She experienced times of sadness at the passing of her parents Samuel and Lillie (Ruby) Nesbitt, her husband, FH (Bud) Biddell, brother John (Jack) Nesbitt and her daughter Lynne Norrena who was very special to her and she missed dearly.
Gram had a long, full and happy life as the wife of an RCAF pilot and as a career woman working for many years at Rexall Pharmacy in Ottawa. She was a vibrant woman who loved to travel and kept her eyes open for new experiences. This was demonstrated in her willingness to move from Ottawa to Medicine Hat in her 80Â’s. She packed the things most important to her and flew across the country for a new adventure. Once in Medicine Hat, she comfortably settled into PaulÂ’s home where she stayed, with him by her side, until her passing. He made sure that in her later years she was surrounded by love and family, joined regularly by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also had a special feline friend, Harriett, who passed her days warming GramÂ’s lap and often amusing her.
A private celebration of life will take place with the family at a later date.

1951 ~ ALICE McLEOD ~ 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Alice May McLeod (nee Stewart) announce her passing on May 30th, 2020 in Medicine Hat, Alberta at age 68 (but 39 forever). Alice was born and raised in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on November 15th, 1951.

She married and moved to Gull Lake, Saskatchewan where she lived for 30 years. She enjoyed farm life and loved spring when all of the new animals were born. Being an active member of Golden Sheaf Women’s Institute and the Gull Lake School Board, chaperoning school trips, being a Brownie leader, and being a hockey mom kept her busy. She loved listening to music and singing along with the radio. Alice was a fantastic cook and baker who took great pride in preparing meals for family and friends. She cherished spending time with family and organized 3 Stewart-Scorgie family reunions in Meota, Saskatchewan. Staying in touch with friends was also a priority whether by social gatherings or letters and cards with updates and pictures. Every summer she kept close watch for when the hummingbird moths would visit her flowers. In 2001, Alice started a new journey in Medicine Hat. She retrained and applied her artistic creativity to her work as a master picture and artwork framer. She enjoyed meeting so many new people through her condo community and various jobs. Growing flowers in the summer, reading the newspapers, and decorating for Christmas remained pleasures throughout her life.

She is survived by her children Cory (Tera & Sophia), Melissa, and Jared (Leanne, Luke, & Kate), her sisters Barb Stewart and Maggie (Ron Crawford), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents Charlie & Grace Stewart, her sister Celia & brother-in-law Albert Carlson, and her brother-in-law Edwin Matthews. By request, no formal funeral service will be held. Those who wish to honor her memory may do so by donating to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Medicine Hat Home Care and the staff on 4 west at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for the excellent care and concern shown to our mother. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: office@pattisonfuneralhome.com subject heading: Alice McLeod, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

ANITA MARGARET SCHMIDT

(NEE LABBÉ)

January 12, 1934 – May 27, 2020

Peacefully, on Wednesday, May 27, our dear Mom and Baba passed away at Beacon Hill Lodge in Winnipeg, with her two daughters by her side. She was 86 years old.

Anita is survived by daughters Janet (Dave) and Susan (Claude); daughters- in-law Tara and Wanda; grandchildren Trevor, Katie, Chelsea, Lindsay, Cody and Steven; as well as great grandchildren Oliver, Aven, Luke, Riley and Ivy.

She was predeceased by her husband Fred, sons Jigger and Fred, and granddaughter Miranda.

Anita was born in Winnipeg and lived in Fisher Branch where she met Fred. They were married on April 6, 1953. She was very active in the community and was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, 4-H, and Community Centre. She and Fred owned and operated a grocery store and butcher shop.

Anita was a very proficient seamstress, created beautiful Easter eggs, and developed a passion for art in many forms. She also enjoyed curling and golf.

The family moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1972 when she and Fred went into the hotel/motel business. Anita worked with Fred in the motel and also developed her many skills as an artist and gourmet cook. At one point she taught cooking classes at the Medicine Hat College. Besides being involved with the church, she was a life-time member of the Medicine Hat Art Club.

Anita was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1990. Her tenacity and determination allowed her to enjoy many more active years before choosing to live in a personal care home.

After Fred passed on June 5, 2019, Anita moved back to Manitoba. We are so grateful to have had her nearby and able to spend time with family in Manitoba.

We are also grateful to the wonderful staff on the 6th floor at Beacon Hill who gave her the most dignified and compassionate care.

We will have a celebration of her life in Medicine Hat when the pandemic threat has subsided. She will then be interred along with Fred at Hillside Cemetery.

If friends so desire, memorial donations in Anita’s name can be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 Manning Road, N. E., Calgary, Alberta, T2E 2P5 or, to the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta, 101-928, Allowance Avenue, S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Condolences may be expressed at http://www.cropo.com.

BRANDON JOSEPH NIWA

May 27, 1983 ~ May 29, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brandon J Niwa on Friday, May 29th, 2020.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Ashly, parents, Greg and Janice Niwa, big sister, Lindsay (Kris Mathers) and nephew, Parker. As well as his grandma, Marie Niwa, Ashly’s parents, Wendy and Duncan Macdiarmid, sisters-in-law, Kyly (Mike) Houde and Haily Macdiarmid and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandpa, Dennis Niwa, and maternal grandparents, Orv and Terry Kope and his best “friend,” Missy, his most loyal companion.

Brandon was born and raised in Medicine Hat. He graduated from McCoy High School in 2001. Brandon made so many long lasting friendships throughout his life, many starting in early elementary school and thru sports like minor hockey. He was able to carry many of those friendships even through the current years. It wasn’t unusual to wake up to his closest buddies Teeg, Leif or Oveson camping on the couches on the weekend. He was there

for so many when support was needed.

When he graduated he went to work with his Dad at Niwa Crane. It was there he spent 20 years working alongside his Dad and Uncle Bruce who was pivotal in him becoming one of the best crane operators around. He loved his job and he worked so hard. He was the backbone of Niwa Crane. Everyone there is going to miss him so much.

August 8th, 2015 Brandon married his best friend, the love of his life, Ashly Macdiarmid. When their busy work schedule allowed you could often find them camped out in the basement or curled up in bed with their fur babies watching movies or Netflix. If feeling adventurous, you could find them touring the world to see Metallica. Whitefish was their favourite getaway and they spent many winter weekends away snowboarding Big Mountain, or cozying up by the fire at the family cabin. In the summer they loved to spend the days on the lake, and in the evening lay in the boat looking at stars and listening to Brandon’s terrible “house music” or Metallica- Nothing Else Matters. And just be there. July 4th was always spent in Whitefish with family, where Uncle Brandon would be Parker’s hero buying out every firework vendor and putting on a show that usually ended up with a small disaster.

Aside from work and married life it was not uncommon for Brandon to spend time with several of his closest friends, playing poker, causing innocent trouble and playing numerous pranks. As one of his friends aptly put it, “Brandon was a walking memory…” These memories and stories will make us laugh for years to come. We will miss him terribly. He was loved by so many…

A private service is to be held. The family is planning a celebration of Brandon’s life in the future with details to come as well as Cubs Alumni game.

In lieu of flowers or food please consider a donation to the Niwa Family Fund c/o the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, (430 6 Ave SE #104, Medicine Hat, AB T1A. Through our Family Fund, donations go to our Communities greatest needs, we will keep Brandon’s memory alive for many, many years to come.

1935 ~ DOREEN BEIERBACH ~ 2020

The family of Mrs. Doreen Beierbach, beloved wife of the late Herb Beierbach Jr., passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on February 12th, 2020. Mom leaves to cherish her memory four children, Barry Beierbach of Strathmore, AB, Rodney (Cecilia) Beierbach, Roxanne (Dave) Marr, and Rainy Deis (Kevin Peterson), all of Medicine Hat, AB; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister, Pearl (Alex) Palama of Hawaii; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Herb; eldest son, Wayne; parents, Emil and Viola Darr; in-laws, Herb Sr. and Marie Beierbach; stepmother, Elsie Beierbach; and sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Jack Hellman. Mom was born in Fox Valley, SK on January 27th, 1935. She was raised north of Hilda on her family’s farm. On July 25th, 1953, she married Herb and together they continued to farm/ranch the homestead until they retired in 1977 and moved to Medicine Hat. Mom then went to work at Kresge’s for several years and then Joyline until she finally RETIRED. She loved her garden and her flowers, and a year never went by when she did not plant a vegetable garden. She was always giving away the vegetables that she grew to others. Mom had a green thumb! She had the most beautiful flower gardens. No weed could get by her! Mom really loved the visits from her grandchildren and in later years, her great-grandchildren. She always made sure there were plenty of sweets and Hawkins Cheezies for them. Over the past several years, Mom started to pamper herself by having her nails done by one of her granddaughters. She would look forward to the “next” ones, always full of smiles about the colours and designs that were done. Mom was also the VERY BEST cook! She always made everyone’s favourite dishes when they visited. She would ask “what would you like?”, and then had it made when we arrived with plenty of leftovers to take home along with desserts and other sweets. We are going to really miss “THE COOK”!! In her honour, we will have a come & go garden party to celebrate Mom’s life on Saturday, June 13th, 2020 at 765 Taylor Road SE, Medicine Hat. from 1:00p.m. – 4:00p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and reminisce amongst family, friends, and flowers. 1929 ~ MARGARET JANSEN ~ 2020

Margaret Maria Jansen of Medicine Hat, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at the age of 91 years, beloved wife of the late Godefridus “Frey” Jansen. Sad at her passing but grateful for a life so well lived are her two sons and four grandchildren, Marco Jansen (Michele Winger), his children Brianna and Lucas, and Jeffrey Jansen (Isabel Bernete), and her children Morgan and Brooklyn; Brianna and Lucas’ mother Gail (Mike) Kesslar; one sister Martha Liesting as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Margaretha and Jan van Gent; her husband Frey in 1988; three brothers, Wim, Nico and Jan van Gent; three sisters, Jannie Naayen, Lenie Mulder and Nellie Feteris.
She lived a life of happiness and gratitude even though she lived through the occupation of The Netherlands during WWII, contracting tuberculosis near the end of the war, and defied the doctors’ expectations of her chance of survival. She remained grateful for the service and sacrifice of the Canadian soldiers that liberated her, throughout her entire life.
She married Frey in 1965 and when he was offered a promotion and transfer to his choice of Kenya, the US, or Canada in 1967, they chose Canada. She crossed the Atlantic by ship with her infant son, Marco, and their dog, while Frey flew ahead to prepare their new home.
Eventually settling in Edmonton, where Jeffrey was born, she created a life of joy, gratitude, and caring that touched everyone she came in contact with.
After retirement, she moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to Brianna and Lucas, where she quickly became “Oma” (Dutch for Grandmother) to everyone around her. She continued to spread happiness everywhere she went, especially when she moved to Meadowlands. The staff there quickly fell in love with her, and she with them. She welcomed them into her suite like family, and always had time for a chat, a song, or to give them a piece of chocolate.
It was during this time that she befriended Sue, who at the time was the nurse at her physician’s office, and her husband Ray. The two became exceptionally close friends, and Margaret would often refer to Sue as her soulmate. Margaret knew she could always rely on Sue to be there for her.
She would have loved to stay with her “family” at Meadowlands, but when her care needs quickly increased, she needed to be moved to St Joseph’s/ Carmel Hospice. Once there it only took about 30 minutes before one of the unit staff told another, “If you need cheering up, visit Margaret.”
Both facilities treated her with the utmost care and love that her entire family will be forever grateful for, right up to the moment of her peaceful passing as she slept.
The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. Family and Friends are invited to remotely attend any public funeral service at our facility through live streaming on our Facebook page – Pattison Funeral Home and Crematorium.
Those who wish to remember Margaret with a donation, may do so to the Red Cross. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: office@ pattisonfuneralhome.com subject heading: Margaret Jansen, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

Rena Patricia McVeigh (nee Maltais), beloved wife of Barry, passed away in Medicine Hat on Thursday, June 11, 2020, at the age of 64 years. Along with Barry, Rena’s memory will live on in the hearts of her sons, James (Lauren), Peter (Kate) and Gerald (Vanessa); mother, Shirley Maltais; sister and nephew, Dallas and Raymond O’Neill; brother, Pat; nephew, Felix; nieces, Alex and Quin (Darren); aunt, Audrey Lines and her children, Garry (Jill), Marcy (Brian), Arleen (Dave), Mary Ellen (Ron), Todd (Barb); Barry’s family in England as well as many very good friends and of course her dog, Sam. Rena was born on July 19, 1955, in Swift Current, SK. She loved being a nurse and took pride in the profession. After retiring about four years ago, she kept busy at the Leisure Centre, walking the dog and enjoyed being outside working in the yard at her house and at their cabin in BC. Rena loved being in any nature setting especially in summer, but also in winter. Cancer changed that but also gave her an opportunity to give and feel love over the last few months. She loved hugs… she gave and received lots of those. There is a bench along the river at Police Point Park that has been placed there in Rena’s memory. It is for you to use to sit and relax in a nature setting. Thank you to everyone that came to the house and shared laughter; it meant a-lot to all of the family as well as Rena. A celebration of Rena’s life will be held at a later date. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com). If friends so desire, memorial donations in Rena’s name may be made directly to the SPCA, 55 Southwest Drive S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8E8. Honoured to serve the family is

Some of her greatest loves were her grandchildren; a call, visit, or special craft made for her always filled her heart with love. During her time at Garden View Lodge, her passion for dancing was brought back to life by her love, Jim Bayford. They never missed a waltz.

A Private Funeral Service will be held on June 15, 2020 at 11:00 AM. Due to the ongoing gathering restrictions, the service will be closed to immediate family only; however, family and friends that are not in attendance are welcome to watch via livestream under her obituary on our website.

STELLA SUTTON

August 11, 1930 – March 18, 2020

Stella Sutton passed away peacefully on March 18, 2020 at the Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon, SK. Stella Lucile Sutton was born in Sceptre, SK on the 11th of August 1930. She was the second of six children of Lawrence and Hilda Sutton. She attended Kathleen School (south of Sceptre) until it closed then finished her school at Sceptre. Stella married Orwell Sutton on July 5th 1948 in Swift Current, SK. They farmed in the Sceptre community; living on the Ralph Sutton farm for 13 years until they purchased and moved to the Roadhouse farm (just north of Sceptre) in 1961. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, great cook – paying attention to the little details when making great tasting meals and picnics on excursions to the Sandhills, Rodeos, Lemsford Park, and delivering meals to the field. She loved sewing, mending, taking care of her garden and keeping the farmyard in great shape. Stella was incredibly involved in the community. She was a member of Sceptre United Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and assisting with C.G.I.T. (Canadian Girls in Training). She was active with Girl Guides and the Boy Scout Programs, coached ball and was a key participant in the development of the Sceptre History Book. She was an avid member of the Women’s Institute, enjoying their teas and other gatherings. One of her favourite activities was acting and directing plays in the Sceptre Hall. Stella was a wonderful supporter and motivator for her children, enabling them to often achieve more than they thought possible. She would encourage, nudge, persist, push, till they suddenly realized they actually could to what was once thought undo-able! All five of her children accomplished more in life because of this persistence! Stella always gave of herself. She was devoted to her husband, her children, her grandchildren and to her ailing parents in their time of need. She was always helping someone. Stella lost her loving, adoring husband, far sooner than she ever expected on November 18, 1979. She stayed on the family farm for a short while after, then moved to Prince Albert, SK in 1981 before relocating to Saskatoon in 1983 and remained there until her passing. In Saskatoon, Stella remained active, involved in healthcare initiatives, and community clubs. She joined square dancing, where she met Garry MacKenzie, who became an incredibly good friend and companion. Stella was also predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Hilda (Gulliford), as well as Orwell’s parents, Ralph and Alma (Bell), one sister Shirley, one brother Ron, very sadly one grandson Trevor Sutton, good friend Garry MacKenzie plus five brothers-in-law: Jack Steier (Shirley), Mitch Philip (Doreen), Gordon Francis (Vivian), Denzil Sutton (Wilma) and Beverley Sutton (Elsie). Stella is survived by two sisters, Vivian Francis and Doreen Philip, and one brother Victor Sutton plus all of her children: Patsy (Brian) in Calgary, Joan (Heinz) in Redcliff, Russell (Carol) in Medicine Hat, Lorraine (Hugo) in Saskatoon and Glenn (Jeannine) in Sceptre as well as 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Stella will be laid to rest, beside Orwell, in the Sceptre Cemetery following a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, may be made to the Great Sand Hills Museum in Sceptre, SK. By visiting the website greatsandhills museum.com or calling 306-623-4345. Rest in Peace. You deserve it! One super Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Sister, Daughter and genuinely great lady. In our hearts and thoughts forever. 1925 ~ JOHN A. (JACK) McDOUGALD ~2020

John A. (Jack) McDougald passed away at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on May 31, 2020 at the age of 94 years. Jack was born in Maple Creek to James and Florence (Cumberland) McDougald and was raised there, along with his two younger brothers, while also spending time on the Y Bar ranch south of Maple Creek.

In 1939, at the age of 13, Jack joined the Reserve Army. That year, his unit, the 14th Canadian Light Horse, was the last unit to take horses to camp at Dundurn. In 1943 he enlisted in the Canadian Army, taking basic training at Saskatoon, Kingston, and Hamilton. World War II ended just as his unit was completing their training, so his hope to go overseas did not come to be. He remained in contact with unit comrades ever since. He was forever proud to be a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, as it was the Legion that ensured that the young soldier would complete his Grade 12 at Regina, and helped former soldiers get into agriculture.

After finishing with the army and high school, Jack returned to Maple Creek and began ranching. He was always open to innovative ideas regarding range management and cattle breeding.

Jack believed in a strong community through active participation. He served in various capacities with the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Society for Range Management, Rural Municipality of Maple Creek, Cypress Lodge Special Care Home, Maple Creek Union Hospital, Saint Mary’s Anglican Church, Southwest Saskatchewan Oldtimers’ Association, International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Royal Canadian Legion. For a number of years, he was a volunteer driver for the Handi Bus, Seniors Taxi, and Meals on Wheels.

Dad was forever welcoming, always meeting new people in Maple Creek and while travelling, and he loved learning and sharing. We know that Dad had a network of friends, young and old, far and wide, greater than we will ever know. The telephone kept him in touch with friends and relatives constantly. In 1954 he married Ivy Park. They ranched at the Y Bar until retiring to Maple Creek in 1987. They were active in the community. Dad rode his bike about Maple Creek for many years, and forever made a point of having a daily walk. He was a regular at the curling rink for many years. They did a good bit of travelling until Ivy passed away in 2003. Jack continued to do some traveling and spent several winters in Victoria. Music was important and there was a great variety via radio, home stereo, dances, theatre, festivals, music clubs and cafes, and internet radio.

Jack is survived by sons, John (Renata), Angus (Darlene), Ray (Noelene); daughter, Claire (Doug Wilson); grandchildren, Jolene (Mike), Cory (Nicole), Angela, Alexandra (Shawn), Jim (Louise), and Shaun; and numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law, Evelyn Park and Jean McDougald.

Jack was predeceased by his wife Ivy; brothers, Dan and Alex; sister-in-law, Jackie McDougald; brother-in-law, Cecil Park; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Bernice & Clinton McPhee and Margaret & Bill Herbert.

Due to COVID-19, a private graveside service was held June 4, 2020, with the Archdeacon Peter Boote officiating. A memorial service will be held in the future as covid-19 restrictions allow. Expressions of sympathy can be e-mailed to condolences@saamis.com, subject heading Jack McDougald. Those who wish to remember Jack may do so with a gift to St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, c/o Mary Anne Friday, Box 353, Maple Creek, SK, S0N 1N0, or the charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel and Crematorium, Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Jeannine Aline Wagner passed away on June 9th, 2020 at the age of 87 years. Jeannine is survived by and will be missed by her sons, Clint and Clay; daughter-in-law, Christie; granddaughters, Kiaya and Piper; great grandsons, Sebastian and Oliver. She is also survived by her sister, Jacqueline (Jim); brother, John (Lynn); sister-in-law, Addie; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Doug’s close cousins, Keith (Mary) and Iva Jean. She is predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Aline; brother, David (Elizabeth); sister, Marie (Lynn); brother-in-law, Dale (Evelyn); sister-in-law, Mary and brothers-in-law, Dominick, Junior; and sisters-in-law, Tot and Norma; and brother-in-law, Stan. Jeannine was born in Sintaluta, SK to Arthur and Aline Railton. She was the third child, a sister for Marie and David. Her sister Jacqueline arrived almost three years later. Jeannine got a sister and best friend all in one. The family was completed in June of 1945 with the addition of her brother, John. When Jeannine turned six years old she went to live with her favorite aunt, Marie, and developed a driving interest to follow her into the teaching profession. She successfully completed her education at Teachers College in Moose Jaw, SK. She then taught for 34 years. Jeannine taught for three years around Sintaluta, SK, during which time an aunt started trying to be a matchmaker and pushing a gentleman as old as her father. Jeannine being the strong-willed woman that she was, went to the Superintendent and asked him to find her a new job as far away as he could. He recommended Consul, S, as he had worked down there and had a very high opinion of the town. He sent a recommendation to the school board and she was hired. She got a taste of southwest hospitality almost immediately, she arrived on the train at Shaunavon and was told she would have to wait for the train the next morning, but then the station agent said he knew a young man that was working in Consul. He contacted him and assured her that it would be more comfortable if she caught a ride with him. When they got to Consul, the young man contacted the head of the school board who directed her to Gramma Frame. Jeannine was always grateful for the ride and to be boarded with such an outstanding lady. Unknown to her, two local men, who were cousins, flipped a coin to see which one had to ask her to the dance, Doug won the toss so Harry had to ask her out. Gramma Frame assured her that they were good boys and came from good families, so she went with Harry. By the second dance it was Doug picking her up and less than a year later they were married. The first 3 years they moved several times. After the birth of their first child, Clint in December, 1959 they bought a farm at Senate. Jeannine again started teaching at Consul. She taught there for the next 30 years. In November 1962, the family was completed with the addition of Clay. There were two families in Jeannine’s life, the four of us and hundreds of students who passed through her classroom. Jeannine and Doug travelled extensively including trips to Mexico, Canadian barn dance, England and several tours with Warlin tours. After Doug had had a heart attack they moved to Medicine Hat in 1998. They bought a house on 13th Avenue, and made it their home until their passing. In honour of Jeannine’s memory donations may be made to Alzheimer Society, 201, 770 – 6th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6. The celebration of Jeannine’s life will be held at a later date due to Covid restrictions. Condolences may be sent to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Jeannine Wagner. GARLAND BOOKER

1947 ~ 2020

Garland Booker, beloved husband of Janis Booker of Redcliff, peacefully passed away in the comfort of his home while in the presence of family on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at the age of 72 years. Garland was born on August 10, 1947 in Roblin, Manitoba. This is where he attended school and spent his younger years. As a young boy age 7, tradgedy struck when his father passed away and he was faced with living life without a father at such an impressionable age. As a young man he worked with his uncle logging in the bush and later made his way to Esterhazy where he worked in the mine. Garland married Janis Funk on December 7, 1968 and their marriage was blessed with two children, Tracy and Donald. He trained as a heavy duty mechanic in Brandon, Manitoba and later moved to Calgary where he worked in construction. Garland had ambitions and so in 1974, he moved his family to Redcliff and was one of the original partners in El-San Industries. The hard work and dedication of Garland and his partners made the company a great success. Garland enjoyed making wine, cooking, golfing and the likes of the outdoors hunting and fishing. He also liked to relax and read books and then share his knowledge with anyone who would listen. He had many “Garlandisms” that made him the character that he was. He was very social and would say, “There are no strangers, just friends I haven’t met yet.” He was well liked and well respected. Garland was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #6 in Redcliff for over 40 years. He loved to travel the world and visited destinations that included Europe, China as well as many cruises. Family meant the world to him and above all, time spent with family was most important to him. Garland will be deeply missed by his wife Janis; children, Tracy (Steve) Forbes and their children, Brianna, Grant and Cassandra; Donald (Daria) Booker and their children, Ryan and James; a brother, Kelly (Denise) Booker; sisters, Lori (Darwin) Dirk and Lana Lietz (Dave) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Booker; his mother, Rita Booker (Lietz) and his father figure, Buck Lietz; a sister, Pam Ferris and a brother, Harvey Booker. By invitation, A Celebration of Garland’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street SW, Medicine Hat on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. Columbarium placement will follow at the Redcliff Cemetery. You are invited to gather for a time of fellowship at the Booker family residence, 231 – 5th Street SE, Redcliff, following the service on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. and on. Due to restrictions in place regarding COVID – 19 from the Chief Medical Officer of Health – funeral services are now limited to no more than 100 attendees including family and funeral home staff. 1935 ~ OLGA SOMMERFELD ~ 2020

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Olga Sommerfeld of Medicine Hat, AB on Friday, June 19, 2020 at the age of 84 years after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. We are so grateful that she is now “free” and in the presence of her Lord and Saviour. We can only imagine the smile on her face as she entered the pearly gates greeted by many she loved! She was the loving wife of Rodney Sommerfeld and leaves to cherish her memory, her children Pat (Barry ) Heller, Shelley (Barry) Hartung and Kenton (Sheri) Sommerfeld as well as her grandchildren Kyle (Janet) Heller, Jocelyn (Felix) Ajayi, Alesha (Tyler) Krupa, Ryan (Janelle) Hartung, and Brady Sommerfeld as well as her Great- grandchildren Katelyn, Zachary, Cassidy, Aiden and Madalyn. Olga was predeceased by her parents and six brothers and sisters, as well as two grandsons, Bryce Heller and Jaydon Sommerfeld. Olga was born on September 13, 1935 in Swift Current, SK. After high school, she attended Prairie Bible Institute having a great interest in Missions. She married the love of her life, Rodney Sommerfeld on October 8, 1955. During their early married years, Olga was a huge support for her husband when he was in university. Besides taking care of two small children, she took in boarders to help financially. She spent long hours in the evenings typing out all of Rod’s papers perfectly. Through the years she was always a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Olga was an active member of Hillcrest church for over 30 years and loved singing in the church choir. Her other passions were cooking in the kitchen for countless functions and being a cook at Pinecrest Bible Camp. She enjoyed kids and babies especially and always enjoyed her time helping out in the church nursery. She worked for many years as secretary of the Evangelical Church Conference and also Secretary for the Evangelical Women’s Association. In her spare time, she loved gardening, sewing, canning and doing cross-stitch. She was Rod’s right-hand assistant with his framing business and always enjoyed helping him. Playing Rook and/or Queens in the evenings with friends was one of her favourite things to do. She supported Rod through his many years of playing ball, always cheering him on while at the same time being the score keeper and chatting with the other wives. Olga was happiest when the sun was shining, with a cup of black coffee in her hand, being surrounded by the family she dearly loved. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye and she adored every moment spent with them. We would describe her best as having a tender “servant heart”, loving, patient, kind, warm and gentle. She was selfless, always putting others first. She truly lived out her Christian faith and loved others. She will be truly missed! The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Franz Jonker and the staff at Good Samaritan Society for their wonderful care and compassion for Olga over the past 9 years. We will be having private internment. The celebration of Olga’s life will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 1Z5, on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 2:00 pm. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, attendance is limited and thus by family invitation only. The service will be live streamed through our website at http://www.saamis.com at 2pm.
