CAROL JEANETTE KRYSIAK

January 16, 1946 ~ June 19, 2020

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family announces the passing of Carol Jeanette Krysiak on Friday, June 19, 2020, at the age of 74 years. Carol leaves to cherish her memory her dear husband and soulmate, Walter as well as two daughters, Cathy (Jason) Bachmier and their children, Jaylin (Brayden) and Tyler; Karen (Kelly) Byam and their children, Kaitlyn and Christopher. Carol is also survived by her brother, Jim (Doreen) Schank and their children, Kim, Carrie, Jason and families; brother-in-law, Elmer Stabler and family; sisters-in-law, Linda Barrand and family, Susan Schank and family, Heiki Unser and family and Christel (Frank) Carpenter and family. Carol also leaves to cherish fond memories to Adam Kienzle who she loved like her own son. Carol was predeceased by her parents, Sam and Frieda Schank; sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy and Pat; brothers, Bob and Terry and mother and father-in-law, Frieda and Ray Beckner. Carol was born in Medicine Hat on January 16, 1946, the youngest daughter of seven siblings. She attended school and graduated in 1966 from Medicine Hat High School. Carol married the love of her life, Walter Krysiak on November 10, 1971, in Medicine Hat. They moved to Bow Island where they raised their two daughters and started their own life as a loving, devoted family. Carol spent most of her life as a caring and compassionate stay at home wife and mother. Once her daughters graduated from high school, Carol started working at IGA in Bow Island where she worked for nine years. Carol enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, tending to her garden and flowers and decorating inside and out for every holiday. One of Carol’s greatest pleasures was having coffee in the morning with her “coffee ladies,” where they would share stories about each other’s grandkids and special events happening in their lives. Community spirit was very important to Carol. She was an active member with the Bow Island Legion where in 2014 she received her Life Membership. In 2008, she was honoured by the Town of Bow Island where she was awarded Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding contributions and dedication to many community committees. Carol was proud of many things, but nothing could compare to how proud she was of her four grandchildren. She took great pride in watching all of their sporting and school events. No matter how big or small, she was proud of all their accomplishments and adored how they have all grown up to be respectful young adults. There was always a special place in her heart for her loyal companion, Koda; who will miss her cuddles at night. She will be truly missed by all that knew her. The family would like to extend a heartful thank you to all the doctors, nurses and EMS staff that took great care of her during her illness. A private family celebration of Carol’s life will be held on Friday, June 26, 2020, at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901-13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat. Due to the current restrictions in place regarding COVID-19 from the Chief Medical Office of Health – funeral services are limited to no more than 100 attendees. ANDREAS

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Allan Jerome Andreas on June 20, 2020, 8 days before his 62nd birthday. He passed comfortably in his home, during his sleep. He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Barb, of almost 40 years; his eldest daughter Amy (Chris) Woodcock and their children Emmett and Lily; and his younger daughter Nicole (Mindy) Brown and their daughter Honor; his brothers and sisters; friends and extended family.
Born in Leader, SK, Allan lived his entire life on the family farm and began farming with his dad in 1977. He also operated a carpentry business and World’s Best Strings, which enabled him to meet people from all over the world. Meticulous in everything he crafted, Allan made strings, completed building projects, built and sprayed cupboards, and seeded, sprayed and harvested his crop. His motto was to work smarter, not harder.
Allan was generous – with his time, his energy, his talents, and his knowledge. His example encouraged us all to help one another. He had a true gift for finding common ground with everyone he met. His archery buddies nicknamed him “the Walmart Greeter.”
He enjoyed camping, traveling and playing on his Bobcat. Farming was his passion and he was precise in every aspect of it. He was an amazing handyman and finish carpenter.
Allan was a role model who was selfless, successful, hard-working, loving, patient, humble, and kind. He was an upbeat and happy person, who always made time for his daughters and grandchildren.
Allan will be missed by everyone who knew him.
The memorial service will be live streamed on the Little Flower Catholic Church Facebook page on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Allan to the Blumenfeld Heritage Site, https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/blumenfeld-and-district-heritage-site/. Binkley’s Funeral Service, Maple Creek & Leader entrusted with arrangements. Condolence may be offered to the family at binkleysfuneralservice.com

CAROLYN OPALINSKI

January 2, 1943 – June 13, 2020

Carolyn Marie Opalinski (nee Resch) passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday June 13, 2020, at the age of 77 years. Carolyn was born on January 2, 1943 in Eston, Saskatchewan, the eldest daughter of Marjorie (Greenstein) and Sebastian “Sam” Resch, in a family of five boys and three girls. She leaves to cherish her memory her children Tammy (Michael) Thobe, Colette (Perry) Schell, Rod (Cindy) Opalinski; siblings, Geri (Archie) Arcand, Violet (Bill) Baugh, Lloyd (Jackie) Resch, Bill (Jean) Resch, and Ken Resch; grandchildren, Cody (Trudie) Thobe, Tania (Jeff) Anderson, Branden and Courtney Schell, Orry and Tye Opalinski as well as four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Dennis (Connie) and Larry (Helen). Carolyn was known and loved as mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was raised in Eston and then went on to attend beauty school in Saskatoon. Shortly after graduating beauty school, she met and married Andrew Opalinski. Their two daughters were born in Saskatchewan and when they later moved to Alberta, their son joined the family while they resided in Edmonton. While living in Wildwood, Carolyn operated a successful hairdressing business from her home. She later moved to Medicine Hat where she completed the Independent Health Care Assistant program that lead to a practicum at Redi Enterprises. In 1992, she began working at Redi Enterprises in the Vocational Services Department as a Disability Service Worker, where she flourished, as her nature lent itself immeasurably to the qualities the employment rested upon – her love of people. Over the more than twenty years she worked at Redi, many cherished relationships bloomed with clients as well as co-workers as she shared her life wisdom, grace, and laughter. Carolyn’s patience and her ability to mediate with love made her a valued member of her work family. She was a wonderful cook and when she taught the kitchen skills program, she could even turn liver and onions into a hit! After a time working for Redi Enterprises she became a home provider as well, taking a young lady client into her home and providing care for her. Carolyn’s open and loving heart ensured that she was not only earnestly cared for, but she effortlessly became a member of the family and reciprocated that kinship. Whether people came to visit her, or she went to visit them, she was very social, outgoing, and ready and willing to drive long distances to visit with family and friends. After her father passed, she eagerly served to ensure her mother could continue to travel to visit with family. Each year she would assist her brother with his catering service for Big Valley Jamboree. She delighted in this annual event, as the real reward for her efforts lay not in the tasks at hand, but in the opportunity to meet and interact with people, something that she truly loved and brought her much joy. Like the beauty she created in the lives of those around her, she also enjoyed beautifying her home and garden. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and doing puzzles. She loved country music and to dance and socialize. She took great pride in her appearance and always looked lovely, with an eye to being fashionably presented. Her life embodied love, and the universe responded in kind, sending her small but meaningful, heart-shaped objects throughout her life, such as a heart-shaped stone or other items. She became a curator of these treasures that adorned her life and home. She was close to her grandchildren and taught them by example the things that were the most important in life. Warm, loving, and outgoing, even simple interactions with her would afford you her always smiling face, and the joyful laughter that her friends cherished. Whether your path crossed hers in her personal life or professional life, her exuberant love of people emanated joy and endeared her to you. While her family and friends will dearly miss her, they know she goes on to a greater existence and feel privileged for their sweet association with her. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, attendance at the funeral service will be by family invitation only. The service will be streamed live on Saturday, July 4, 2020, beginning at 11:00 a.m. We invite you to view the service through this link: https://youtu.be/ZXKZMHd57hk. The link will be available for viewing after that date as well. 1930 ~ JOAN RICHARD ~ 2020

Mrs. Joan Richard (nee Britt) passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years at River Ridge Extended Care Home on Sunday, June 28th, 2020. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Edgar. She is survived by her sister Madelaine (Peter) and family as well as her own children, grandchildren, and great grandson: Randy (Tammy) – Jessica (Byron) & Travis; Mark (Sandra) – Tyler (Shantel – Carter) & Brittany (Kyle); Mary (Ron); Jon (Barb). Mom was born and raised in Redcliff and chose to pursue a career in nursing, graduating in 1953 from the Medicine Hat General Hospital’s School of Nursing. She ministered as a registered nurse for over 40 years. Her career took her through a number of positions in pediatrics, geriatrics and Director of Nursing for the Auxiliary Hospital. Mom loved her patients and early in her career would even take some of the children home for the weekend or for meals since they were often left at the hospital alone. She extended this love to her family and friends and loved to entertain. Mom welcomed everyone into her home and hosted Sunday suppers for the family every week. The small house was filled with wonderful smells, laughter, and cherished memories to last a lifetime. She also enjoyed camping with her children and grandchildren and could be found doing crossword puzzles, word searches, playing solitaire, and watching her birds at the feeders through her back window. Mom and Dad were both avid lifetime Medicine Hat Tigers season ticket holders and could be found cheering on the boys (but not the refs!) Mom’s other longtime dedication was to her faith. She received her 60 year pin this year from the CWL – Catholic Women’s League and was an active member of both St. Mary’s and Holy Family Parish. Gathering up her belongings we also found her prayer book where she had listed all of the people she prayed for each day. When Mom was your friend, she was a friend for life. Mom/Grandma has etched on our hearts so many wonderful memories and we will miss her warm smile and love. The family is deeply grateful to the loving and caring staff at River Ridge who extended Joan the greatest of dignity. Due to the restrictions on gathering, a small family and close friend’s funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 7th at 1:00 p.m. at HOLY FAMILY PARISH. Interment will follow at SAAMIS PRAIRIE VIEW CEMETERY. Friends and colleagues will be invited to celebrate Joan’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, c/o Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1B 4V3. 1930 ~ JOAN RICHARD ~ 2020

1952 ~ DAVID CUNNINGHAM ~ 2020

It is with heavy hearts that the family of David Morris Cunningham of Kelvington, Saskatchewan, announce his passing after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at the age of 68 years. He leaves to cherish his memory two children, Jodi (Todd) Gramlich and Dave (Gail) Cunningham; five grandchildren, Kaden, Joren and Riley Gramlich, Victoria and Robert Cunningham; four brothers, Darrel (Donna), Rodney (Leona), Randy (Marilyn) and Glen (Karen); two sisters, Linda (Maurice) Patenaude and Elaine (Leo) Patenaude as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his two gopher hunting buddies, Payton and Lincoln and an adopted grandkid, Brynn. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Alice Cunningham and one sister, Diane Cunningham. Dave was one of the most selfless, kind, hardworking individuals you will ever meet. He wore his heart on his sleeve and always put his family first. As a dad and then a grampa, he supported, cheered and drove many many miles to sit in rinks, gyms, schools and even doctors offices. Jodi and Dave Jr. were his pride and joy until those grandkids came along. Kaden, Joren, Riley, Victoria and Robert won the lottery when it came to having the grampa they did. Everyone that had the privilege of meeting him soon became aware of the gem that he truly was. Grampa’s pride and joy and unending love for these five was unmatchable. Dave was known as grampa Dave to all near and far. His love for horses and gardening has been passed down through many stories and teachings in the garden. The legacy he leaves behind will continue on through all the lives he touched. Grampa was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that you all showed him during his illness, for this we thank you. Special thanks and love sent to dads personal nurse, Gail. We knew he was in the best hands. JONES, HOWARD

May 13, 1925 – Cardston, Alberta

June 17, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Howard Jones, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at the age of 95 years.

Beyond his youthful ambition to become a professional baseball player, Howard attended University of Alberta, Edmonton and Olds College Agricultural Programs, graduating these programs before enrolling in the three-year Technical Program offered by SAIT, in Calgary. With an eye for opportunity, he and Kay moved to the Cavendish ranch. Through his childhood ranch life and his time at Cavendish, Howard’s character, his authenticity, pride, self-reliance, optimism and humor were firmly rooted in the rhythms of ranch life and governed his deeds.

Howard helped establish the Empress & District Cattle Breeders Association, and served on the Empress Hospital Board, the Special Areas #2 Board, and the School Board Division #4. He worked diligently to support and to save, the critical anchors of a small, rural community in the midst of a declining population.

Though he retired early from ranching, Howard never strayed from the cowboy code, even as he sang and danced on stage in the Medicine Hat Community Theatre and sang in his Barbershop Quartet.

In his last few years in Calgary, Howard spoke of a new, more complex world. He did his best to reclaim an earlier time through his cowboy dress and, over a beer, shared his stories. His insights mixed the literal and the metaphorical; they inspired and amused his children and grandchildren. “If you are thrown from your horse, hang onto to the reins. If you don’t, it could be a long walk home.” For those that knew and loved this wonderful man, his passing has been difficult. We are on the ground, still hanging onto the reins. Knowing he is at peace, we will re-mount and ride again.

In his final weeks, Howard chose no treatment; he chose acceptance and comfort. He spoke often of living a long and rewarding life.

Howard is survived by his children, Ron and Judy, Terry and Lorne, Kim and Patricia, and Jeannette Jones; ten grandchildren, Lindsay, Logan, Danielle, Charlotte, Alicia, Julia, Christopher, Rainer, Jackson, and Taryn; one step-grandchild David; one great-grandson Roran; one step-great-grandson William; and sister Nadene Livingston. He was predeceased by his wife and partner of sixty-six years, Kathleen, on March 7, 2017.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, http://www.heartandstroke.ca. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Howard’s obituary at http://www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

ANN M. SCHELL

July 9, 1949 ~ June 26, 2020

It is with heavy sorrow that our family announces the passing of a very special lady who held our family together – Ann Margaret Schell. She was the bravest and strongest woman we have ever known. Loving and caring is an understatement for this woman. Her love knew no bounds and went uncontested by her actions her whole life. Ann was an amazing protector of her children and grandchildren, no matter the circumstances. She loved hosting every get together and holiday no matter how big or small; she welcomed everyone into her home with love. Ann was born in Grande Prairie, attended school in Camrose and resided in Medicine Hat until her passing. She was a loving housewife, mother and a secretary in the family business. Ann’s caring nature was evident by the raising of her 10 children. She had a great disposition and was always smiling and laughing. In Ann’s spare time, she loved to go bowling and fishing and won many trophies and awards at both. Some of her most treasured time was spent with her children and grandchildren often camping which included a lot of outdoor activities to keep everyone busy. Her flower beds and gardens were filled with a bounty of beauty and produce for the family to enjoy. In days gone by, Ann particularily loved to talk with her mom everyday on the telephone. (Dee), Tanner and Brody; great-grandchildren, Klynton, Kashtyn, Keiryn, Miranda, Coletin, K’Senya, Cohen and Justice; siblings, Marion (Bob), Danny (Leona) and Roger (Barb) as well as all the other family that she loved unconditionally. WILLIAM JOHN DOWLER

September 11, 1935 ~ June 22, 2020

William John Dowler passed away June 22, 2020, in a sudden bout of illness at the Medicine Hat Hospital. John was born September 11, 1935, in Palmerston,Ontario. As a young man in Ontario John began his career with a paper route and delivering groceries. Always a fan of Western life John decided to head West. Searching for sweeter pastures, which if he didn’t find he made. As a young man he prospered in Southern Alberta. In between playing hockey for the Bow Island Mercury's, the Northwest Nitros, the Medicine Hat Hot Shots, coaching minor league hockey and working his day job in irrigation; John met and married his soul mate, Maureen Knowles on September 5, 1959. Upon earning his Irrigation Technician designation, John’s career took him on many exciting adventures including life in Lethbridge, Kamloops, Oregon, Illinois and New Jersey. While in the United States, he still managed to keep his love of the ice active by coaching and playing hockey in Illinois and New Jersey. In New Jersey John changed careers joining the Vermeer company. With Vermeer, John followed behind one of the first Round Hay Balers in the fields of Iowa.
Returning to Medicine Hat in 1976, John and Maureen bought the Husky Gas & Oil franchise. From that business, he moved onto opening Triangle Equipment & Feeds – which he operated until his retirement. John truly enjoyed meeting past customers at farm and ranch events that he continued to attend in his retirement. Living in different locations gave him and his family the opportunity to discover and learn about the area’s history and make many new friends along the way.
John was passionate about Genealogy. The Dowler family tree he compiled is part of a massive genealogical family history, his research linked 16,795 people. John held executive positions in the Medicine Hat Genealogy Society and the Alberta Genealogy Society. John was heavily into Rock Hunting, he was a member of the Medicine Hat Rock & Lapidary club. John held executive positions in the Medicine Hat Rock Club, the Alberta Federation of Rockhounds and the Gem & Mineral Federation of Canada. John was an active member of the South Eastern Alberta Archaeology Society. Whether hiking or camping with the “Arky” or “Rock Club” or out with their Supper Club, John made many enduring friendships plus many “good times” with Jaycees of Canada & USA.
When John wasn't busy meeting with friends, he read. The house is full of books that he had read which he enjoyed sharing the stories and information. John also took a keen interest in his grandchildren’s activities. John is survived by his wife, Maureen; children, Brenda (Joe) Gilchrist, Kevin Dowler (Dauminique Napier), grandchildren, Jody Gilchrist (Shane McKay), Tyler Gilchrist (Kristy), Adam Gilchrist, Kristine Dowler and Dylan Dowler; one great-granddaughter, Taci Gilchrist; siblings, Russell of Coquitlam BC, Carl of Medicine Hat, Murray (Linda), Harold (Rose), Gerry (Anne), Clare (Betty), Dan, Ann (Terry) Murray all of Ontario; sister-in-law, Dawn Knowles; brother-in-law, Len Knowles of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews. LISA ANN (VRABEC) GAMBLE

1962-2020

Our bright light, Lisa, passed away on June 29, 2020. She was born in Calgary on August 13, 1962. We are all heartbroken.

She started school enthusiastically at Varsity Acres Elementary and graduated from Crescent Heights in Medicine Hat, AB. From there she pursued her higher education at Medicine Hat College, where she obtained her certification as a travel consultant. She began her career with P. Lawson Travel and AMA Travel. During this time, she gave back as an assistant teacher in the same travel certification program at Medicine Hat College from which she had graduated. She later moved to White Rock, BC to begin a lengthy career with American Express Corporate Travel, winning countless accolades and awards, including the company’s highest honor “Pacesetter” several times. In 1996 she met the love of her life, Ian Gamble. They were married in June 2001 in Vancouver, BC.

Lisa was a “Daring Doer”. She boldly set goals and promptly achieved them. She also gave generously of her time as a volunteer with the North Vancouver Police Dept, Special Victims Unit, and assisted with special needs children and adults at the Pacific Riding Therapeutic Horseback Academy in Abbotsford BC. Although she was an accomplished golfer and excelled at other sporting activities, Lisa’s passion was curling. She curled for many years with her dear friends in North Vancouver. She also worked tirelessly as a valued member of a core group of Curling Canada volunteers serving at major curling bonspiels and championships across Canada, including the Brier, Scotties, Nationals, and Worlds. She was enormously proud to be associated with Curling Canada.

An ardent traveler and adventurer, Lisa was determined to see the entire world. She experienced countless cities through her profession, and many other locales with Ian just for the fun of it. Lisa (along with her brother Greg) was the family event organizer, and happily kept us all in line. Spending many summers with family in Nags Head NC (OBX) was one of Lisa’s great joys. In 2006, she and Ian built a beautiful log home just south of Kamloops affectionately known as “The Ranch”, where friends and family could gather and spend special moments together.

Lisa was predeceased by her father, Mike Vrabec, in 1988, and by both sets of grandparents. She is survived by her loving husband Ian and their dog Leo. Lisa is also survived by her mother Jan Vrabec (Jim); brother Greg and Jodi Vrabec and their children, Curtis (Kara), Erica and Alison; sister Vickie and Rob Berger and their children Michael and Kalli; mother-in-law Mairi Matheson; brother-in-law Fraser and Mardelle Gamble and their children Kaiya and Angelina; sister-in-law Heather and Jim Kennedy; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lisa’s nephews and nieces were extra special to her. She loved them all deeply. She will be dearly missed and loved by all those whose lives she touched.

Lisa was cremated near Kamloops, as was her wish. Her ashes will be spread at several cherished locations in BC and Alberta, and a final resting place will be established at Hillside cemetery in Medicine Hat where her dad rests. A celebration of life will be held in Whitefish Montana at the earliest practical opportunity. This will allow our many family members residing in the US to gather with many other friends and family to celebrate our beloved Lisa. The family kindly requests that any donations be made to the Curling Canada Foundation (https://www.curling.ca/foundation/), a cause near and dear to Lisa’s heart. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: office@pattisonfuneralhome.com subject heading: Lisa Gamble, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

1956 ~ TERESSA FLAIG ~ 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Teressa Flaig-Forczek, beloved wife of Keith Flaig, on July 9th, 2020. Teressa passed away at the age of 63 years after a short battle with cancer. She leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Angela Falez and husband, Brad of Calgary; brothers-in-law, Bruce Sunstrum of Cessford and Larry and Carma Flaig of Raymond; sister-in-law, Karen and Tim Hittel of Medicine Hat; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Jean Forczek; in-laws, Fred and Ruth Flaig; sister, Linda Sunstrum; brother, Leszek Forczek; and nephew, Dallas Sunstrum. Teressa was born in Brooks, AB on November 17th, 1956. She moved to Medicine Hat in 1975 where she was employed at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital until 2003 when health issues forced her to retire. Teressa enjoyed travelling even though it was difficult for her. They enjoyed numerous destinations; her favourite was the many trips to visit her brother who was an artist living in California for many years until his death in May 2019. Teressa was a caring and generous person. “God Loves a cheerful giver”, 2 Corinthians 9:7. She believed in being happy to give and enjoy rewards of bringing joy to others. It seemed she always knew what someone wanted or needed. She could always make you laugh with her sarcastic sense of humour which we all fell victim to. Teressa always tried her best whenever she did anything. She always felt that if something was worth doing; it is worth doing right. She was a hard worker whether it was at work or at home, work ethics she inherited from her Dad. She spent a lot of time with her Dad when she was young at his shop, Brooks Iron Works. She would say that no matter how busy Dad was, he would shut the lathe off and spend time with her and her dog Porky. Teressa was very close to her father and it broke her heart when he passed away in 1998. She will be sadly messed by all those who knew her. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors, nurses on 5E and EMS staff that took such great care of her and showed so much compassion and kindness in her final days. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date with Pastor Bob Church officiating. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Teressa Flaig-Forczek, beloved wife of Keith Flaig, on July 9th, 2020. She was a hard worker whether it was at work or at home, work ethics she inherited from her Dad. She spent a lot of time with her Dad when she was young at his shop, Brooks Iron Works. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors, nurses on 5E and EMS staff that took such great care of her and showed so much compassion and kindness in her final days. RICK BOKSTEYN

1958 – 2020

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Richard ‘Rick’ Boksteyn on Saturday, July 11, 2020. Rick leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Linda of 36 years; sons, Derik (Janelle) and Ben (Janae) and their daughter, Shelby; brothers, John (Deidra), Michael (Debbie) and Bradley and his sister-in-law, Gwynn (Robert) Boksteyn. Rick also leaves to mourn Linda’s sisters, Trudy (Eric) Papsdorf, Nellie (Don) Starke and Betty (Lloyd) Bischke as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rick was predeceased by his parents, John and Yvette Boksteyn and brother, Daniel (Gwynn). Rick was the rock of his family. He was especially proud of his two sons, Derik and Ben. Rick was an incredible attentive parent and loved his family unconditionally. His boys were his greatest treasure and he cherished every day with them. Rick spent many weekends cooking and preparing great feasts for his family. His love language was good food prepared by Dick. His most recent joy was the arrival of his first grandchild, Shelby. Rick was employed by the City of Medicine Hat as a fire fighter for 35 years and recently retired. He was a dedicated firefighter and took his responsibilities very seriously. Rick was a coordinator for the dive rescue team for many years and coordinated many search and recovery missions in open water and ice incidents. He loved his job and enjoyed mentoring the new members with the fire service and serving the community. Rick truly valued the brotherhood within the department and was proud to call them his fire family. Rick was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He attended St. Louis School, McCoy High School and Medicine Hat College. During Rick’s younger years he had exceptional athletic abilities participating in competitive swimming, playing junior football for the Medicine Hat College Rattler Football team and playing Rugby for the Medicine Hat Ogres. When Rick decided to hang up his cleats from football and rugby, his love for the sports continued in a coaching capacity. He was a defensive coach for the McCoy Colts football team for 36 years. He had a true talent to inspire young players and was particularly interested in developing the players that needed extra encouragement and attention. Rick demonstrated exemplary leadership as a coach. He was generous with his time and support to the team. He strongly resisted any individual recognition or attention acknowledging his efforts. Instead he insisted focusing success on the combined efforts of players, coaches, teachers and parents. There was no “I” in team where Rick was concerned. Coaching was Rick’s greatest pleasure. He often said that coaching was a gift that allowed him to be 16 again. Rick had a passion for a collection of sport and luxury cars. He owned a collection of firebirds and in the last few years, began purchasing large comfort cars which were often referred to as “boats”. He was especially proud of his latest purchase of a 1978 Lincoln continental just prior to his illness. Rick was a good friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed time with friends drinking a Lucky at his garage and hosting tailgate get togethers. Rick never passed up an opportunity to have fun and spend time with his friends. He was well known in the community for his positive attitude and love for life. Rick lived 100 years in 62 and lived his life his way! He will be greatly missed by all that new him.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, July 17, 2020, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held at the Methanex Bowl, 2000 Division Avenue North, Medicine Hat on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

ERNIE BLOCK

1926 ~ 2020

Ernest Edward Block of Lethbridge passed away suddenly on May 13, 2020 at the age of 94.

Ernie was born in Medicine Hat to Marie and Gustav Block on March 15, 1926. He grew up in a home with musically talented parents and became a multitalented musician at an early age, mastering numerous instruments throughout his life.

Although Ernie was best known for his musical abilities, he had many athletic abilities as well and was an avid sports fan of baseball and hockey. At the age of 17 years he was making a name for himself in baseball and was professionally scouted but chose to continue with his academic and musical interests.

Ernie graduated from Alexander High School in Medicine Hat and went on to get his teaching degrees at the University of Alberta and University of Missoula. He taught for a total of 35 years. He was the first Grade 8 typing teacher at Hamilton Junior High in Lethbridge for 29 years until his retirement.

His retirement from teaching allowed him to devote himself to his passion – music.

Ernie was involved in music from an early age. He had his own orchestra from the early 50s to the early 60s – The Ernie Block Orchestra. He started with the Lethbridge Big Band in 1963. Throughout his musical career he also participated in the Lethbridge Playgoers and Lethbridge Musical Theatre. He played in many different bands in Southern Alberta. He was an accomplished musical arranger (wrote his first arrangement at age 12) and copyist sharing his arrangements with many in Canada and the U.S. Ernie enjoyed volunteering his time helping with the Junior high and high school Jazz bands at lunch or after hours. He jokingly would say he “never had a day off”.

Ernie received a tribute from Lethbridge Jazz Society for outstanding contributions to the Music Community of Southern Alberta for 50 years.

Ernie had a very upbeat personality and loved to acknowledge his appreciation of music. In his later years he would attend concerts and productions and marvel at the talent that was right here in Lethbridge.

At the time of his passing, Ernie was still actively involved playing bass with the Herb Hicks quartet as well as playing with the Dixieland band for the Horse Races at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club. He was looking forward to the next gig at the Mocha Cabana and for the Horse Racing to start up again.

Ernie was still living independently in his own home, driving his own vehicle, (one of the oldest members of Alberta Motor Association) and was looking forward to a regular tee time at the Lethbridge Country Club. During his 44 year membership he had scored 2 hole in ones.

Ernie was predeceased by second wife Marg Forish (2018) and son Douglas Block (1998). He is survived by former wife Jean Buxton (Edmonton) and children Allan (Carol Flaig) Lethbridge , Brenda (Ken Greenan) Edmonton, Carol (Art Riendeau) Edmonton, Marg Forish’s daughter Deb (Klaus Santrau) Lethbridge

Grandchildren: Keane Block, Amanda (Derrek Hansen and great grandson Sawyer) Patrick Riendeau, Tori Greenan and Josh Halldorson.

Ernie touched many lives and as much as the family would enjoy a public gathering to honor his memory, due to Covid restrictions we are unable.

A private family service will be held, and a public Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date when restrictions are lifted.

The funeral service will be recorded for all to view on Martin Brothers obituary website. http://www.fhwebsites.org/ymb/ymb/obituary/Ernie-Block

In honor of Ernie, donations can be made to Lethbridge Jazz Society c/o Allied Arts Council 318 7th St S Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2G2.

Ormond Dick

December 29, 1926 – Jul. 12, 2020

Orm Dick, beloved husband of the late Jean Dick, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2020, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at the age of 93 years with his family by his side. Dad was born in Dauphin, MB on December 29, 1926, the first in his family to be born in Canada after immigrating from Scotland. When Dad was 12 his father died, after which he learned the meaning of hard work and responsibility. At the young age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy. Upon his return home he married Jean Tucker. Dad became a butcher at EatonÂ’s in Dauphin, and then went on to become Canada Packers top salesman, putting on thousands of miles necessitating a new car every year. They lived in Carmen and finally Brandon, MB, where they raised their 4 children. He retired early at the age of 55, moving to the Shuswap. Never satisfied with being idle he started a new career investing in the stock market, which became a successful passion for him. Family always came first. No one was spared by his relentless teasing. Many summers were spent on the lake at the Shuswap, with Dad spending endless hours pulling skiers behind the boat. He took great pleasure in playing crib, having a drink of rum, and participating in the annual family NFL football pool. Dad and Mom loved to travel and enjoyed many winters in Florida, Texas, and Mexico with family and friends. After living in B.C. for almost 20 years, they decided to move to Medicine Hat to be closer to family. Dad was predeceased by his wife Jean in 2017 and son Brent in 1988. Left to cherish his memory are his 3 children Randy (Leslie), Jan Morgan, Brad (Judy), as well as 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses on 5E, as well as his family doctor, Dr Nunweiler, for the great care and compassion that he received.

TIANA SHOEBRIDGE

January 16, 1980 ~ July 9, 2020

On Thursday, July 9, 2020, Tiana Joy Shoebridge left the loving embrace of both her partner, Colin Binding and that of her mother, Laverne Marie Packard in order to beat cancer for the fifth time in her own way. Cancer may have taken her body in this final battle but because she inspired so many people to fight cancer after her death, she has left behind a Legacy Army of Spirit that “It” will never be able to defeat. Tiana was born on January 16, 1980, to Laverne Marie Shoebridge (nee Dronsfield) and her husband, Lewis Caleb ‘Ted’ Shoebridge. There was also big sister, Marcella Marie patiently awaiting for Tiana Joy Shoebridge to cheer her on! Tiana leaves behind many friends who will miss her and carry on her fight. Her loving partner, Colin Binding will miss her every moment at home when she isn’t there to ring the glass with ice cubes after a tough day and after they have come off the road where they’d spend a great deal of time together riding. He awaits his chance to rejoin the person who ever “gets” him so they can be in the wind again. For 40 years Laverne Marie Packard fought through everything life threw at her to keep Tiana alive and hold her hand as she let go, the best mother that Tiana could have ever wanted. She also leaves behind her step-father who raised her as his own, David Packard; sister, Marcella Marie Shoebridge-Gibson (Tim Gibson); nephews, Nicolas Shoebridge and Tristin Gibson; step-sons, Mitchell (Kristin) Binding and Sydney (Kesha) Binding; grandson, Owen Binding and her in-laws, Harold and Elizabeth Binding. Greeting Tiana on the other side is her father, Lewis Caleb ‘Ted’ Shoebridge; paternal grandparents, Bud and Hazel Shoebridge; maternal grandparents, Herbert Dronsfield Jr and Ida May Dronsfield (whom Tiana has always known as her Guardian Angel); uncle, Lloyd Dronsfield as well as her aunt, Ethel Jacobs. Tiana has always been a believer that her niece, Shandi Marie Shoebridge, awaits her with the company of every pet or rescue animal that her young aunt ever commended to her care. There have been many close family and friends that passed through her life and she will see them all again.

“It may take my life but it won’t take my legacy and my legacy is to take away its power by getting people to raise money and fight back by getting their stories out there.” – Tiana Shoebridge

The family would to thank the Palliative Care and Home Care nurses – you ladies are amazing; as well as Dr. Meiring and our family friend, Dr. Josh Foley. Tiana’s life will be honoured and her memory cherished without the proceedings of a formal funeral service. Tiana wants to thank anyone who wishes to pay their respects and asks that anyone wanting to leave donations in her name, please sue the following charities: Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, Calgary; Ronald McDonald House, Medicine Hat; Furry Friends Food Foundation, Medicine Hat or to the Windy City Canine Rescue, Lethbridge.
