the other died with you
We will often lie awake at night,

And take a walk down memory lane,
with a tear upon our cheek
Remembering you is easy,
we will do it every day
But missing you is a heartache,
that will never go away
We will hold you tightly within our hearts, and there you will remain
Until the joyous day arrives,
that we will meet again”

HARRISON

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Margaret “Maggie” Elaine Harrison (Sparrow) wish to announce her passing on October 4, 2019, surrounded by love and with her family. Maggie is predeceased by her mother (Joan), her father (Harold), and her soulmate Sidney. She is survived by her children Morgan (Jen), Mel (Jana), Sarah (Michael), Connor and Evan; her grandchildren Aubrey, Blake, Owen, Nora, Ethan and Evelyn; her sister Tricia (Brad) Leidal; her sister-in-law Penny Holst and brothers-in-law Gary and Wayne (Brenda). Maggie was born and raised in Medicine Hat as the eldest daughter to Joan and Harold. She spent her childhood loving and tormenting her younger sister Tricia, but found her path when she met Sid in 1974. They married in 1979 and their grand adventure began shortly thereafter when they started their family and welcomed Morgan into their lives. Maggie was the consummate mother and happily grew her family to include Sarah, Connor, Evan and Mel. While Sid was in medical school, Maggie worked long hours to support the family, but also sewed clothes, bargain hunted and did everything she could to keep those difficult years as positive as possible. Maggie’s ultimate joy was in becoming a grandmother. Whether through making gingerbread houses together or a trip to Police Point Park for Easter eggs and bunnies, Maggie loved carving out special time with her six grandchildren. She loved their time together almost as much as she loved spoiling them. Our family cannot begin to find words to thank the many members of Maggie’s care team. Dr. Adeel Azam, Dr. Tom Mohanraj, Dr. Gerry Prince and Dr. Josh Foley showed Maggie such exceptional compassion and care, it was an amazing comfort to our family tosee her in such good hands. A special thanks as well to the many wonderful nurses on unit 5 East at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Finally, thank you to Maggie’s many friends who reached out to help Maggie during her illness with kind words, good company or sometimes just taking out the garbage. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Ronald McDonald House or the charity of your choice. The funeral service will be held in Westminster United Church (101 6th Street SE) on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. David Pollard officiating. PROCTER

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Debbie Ann Procter after a long and courageous battle with C.O.P.D. At the time of her passing Debbie was in the hospital awaiting a lung transplant. Debbie’s journey through life started on March 5, 1960 in Roseau, Minnesota, USA and came to a close at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary on October 3, 2019. Debbie was predeceased by a daughter, Chantel Lynn Procter in infancy, as well as her mother Corinne Palamer and her father Ed Thompson. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Kaylee Monique Procter, brothers; Gordon (Patty) Thompson, Donny (Christine) Thompson, one sister Marilyn Kinsella, as well as numerous nieces and nephews all of whom she cherished. Throughout her journey Debbie enjoyed many occupations, working in several restaurant and night clubs as well as many years for the Bank of Montreal in Calgary where she received countless awards for “Employee of The Month.” Her final place of employment was Walmart in Medicine Hat where she was treated with respect and compassion. They would adjust her work schedule to accommodate her ability to work and give her any time off she needed when her illness would not afford her the strength to work. The family would like to recognize and thank Walmart for their compassion and understanding. She made many new friends at every stop. Her happiest moment and biggest accomplishment came when she saw her daughter Kaylee, whom she loved only as a mother could, graduate from the University of Toronto with a Masters Degree and a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. It was at this moment that Debbie found peace and was truly prepared for what lie ahead. Debbie also leaves behind her two constant companions and best friends, Pixie and Bella, the puppies she loved and treated as children. As per Debbie’s wishes there will be no formal funeral service and cremation has taken place. A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held at Whiskey Creek, Creekside Reception room on Saturday October 12, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. To honour Debbie, please dress casual. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations in Debbie’s memory be made to APARC – Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre or to the Alberta Lung Association. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: pattfh@telusplanet.net subject heading: Debbie Procter, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

1914 ~ ROSALIA BARESCO ~ 2019

Rosalia Elizabeth (Honig) Baresco of Medicine Hat passed away peacefully at 105 years of age on Friday, September 27th, 2019. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Jean Van Wert; sons, Gerry (Georgina) and Dennis; granddaughter, Janine Baresco; and great-grandchildren, Hart and Gage Baresco. She was predeceased by her husband Michael in 2011; grandson, Kevin Baresco; granddaughter, Christine Baresco; son-in-law, Kevin Van Wert; parents, John and Barbara Honig; six sisters; and three brothers. Rosalia was born on the family farm near McTaggart, SK on July 11th, 1914. Life on the farm provided her with a lifelong love of nature, art, and reading. She grew up in nearby Weyburn, SK, guided by her parents, John and Barbara Honig. She married Mike on October 25th, 1939, eventually moving to Medicine Hat in 1946 with their young family. Her Riverside home had a large backyard garden and local farms provided natural, fresh chicken, eggs, and dairy. Berries from the surrounding area were canned or frozen, along with just about everything the garden produced. Mom grounded us with a good home and strong ethics and spirituality. Her love of travel had our family driving the roads of Alberta and Saskatchewan learning the histories of the area. Mom and Dad travelled as well to Eastern Canada, spending time in Quebec and the Maritimes, soaking up more information about her cherished country, Canada. Then finally, a trip to Europe to visit Mom’s Hungarian aunt who resided in Belgrade. Then on to Holland, Italy, and France further stoking Mom’s love of distant lands and history. Upon Dad’s retirement in 1981, they moved to Penticton, BC. Here they took up square dancing, made many new friends, traveled to the coastal islands and throughout BC. They even took an Alaskan cruise to see the whales…didn’t…but did continue to enjoy a very healthy life. In their mid-nineties, they made the decision to return to Medicine and to their children. They resided in St. Joseph’s Home, which was at that time, still operated by their friends, the Carmelite sisters. Mom continued to amaze us as she entered her “100’s”. She continued to paint every day, do crossword puzzles, and attend garden tours. She indeed loved to discuss the news of the day with her strong, educated opinions and she was also an encyclopedia of family history for generations that followed. A special THANKS to the staff at St. Joseph’s Home who provided Mom with many opportunities to hand out and receive quips, barbs, jokes, and “serious” discussions on a regular basis. We are so thankful we had all these amazing years together. We will miss all those competitive card games, Scrabble, Yahtzee, and the many spring, summer, fall, and winter drives through the countryside. TIME to rest in love, Mom, and see all those clouds that you loved to paint from a new height. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. PATRICK'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 238 – 2nd Avenue NE, on Saturday, October 26th, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Francis Tran, Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Roman Catholic Section at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Rosalia’s memory may be made to the Esplanade Children’s Summer Arts Programs, 401 – 1st Street SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8W2 or to the Children’s Library, 414 – 1st Street SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 0A8.

To honour Debbie please dress casual. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations in Debbie’s memory be made to APARC – Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre or to the Alberta Lung Association.

She was predeceased by her husband Michael in 2011; grandson, Kevin Baresco; granddaughter, Christine Baresco; son-in-law, Ken Van Wert; parents, John and Barbara Honig; six sisters; and three brothers. 1945 ~ VAL KOCHER ~ 2019

Valentin Kocher of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 at the age of 74 years. Val grew up on a farm near Revenue, Saskatchewan. He received his education at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. After teaching in Saskatchewan for five years in the towns of Wilkie and Norquay, Val came to Medicine Hat in August 1976. He taught mainly English for McCoy High School for the next twenty-five years. He also taught German for a few years. Mr. Kocher's manner was quiet. He was a reflective, serious man but also had a great sense of humour. He respected his students as persons, assuming they were well intentioned unless they proved otherwise. Above all, he hoped to transmit to students his enthusiasm for learning and a life-ling love of English literature. He read widely as a hobby and worked hard on his courses. Students respected him because he was very knowledgeable. Mr. Kocher coached students in volleyball, curling, public speaking and debate. He served as the McCoy staff representative at Alberta Teachers Association meetings. He was Team Leader of the English Department. He retired in June 2001. Val's interesting family history is in the book, 'Memories of the Black Sea Germans' by Joseph S. Height, available at the public library. Val's mother, Magdalena Volk (nee Zeiler), wrote the article "Sorrows of a Refugee Mother." It describes the life of his parents in the Soviet Union, how his mother became separated from her other children due to the warring armies during World War II, and how she came into contact with them again eleven years later. Val was born in Berlin, Germany. In 1949 his mother and he immigrated to Canada, where she married John Volk, a widower with eight children. Val saw his brother and sister for the first time in 1977 when he and his mother travelled to Kirghizia, in the Soviet Union. Later, when the Soviet Union disbanded, Val's brother, sister and most of his relatives immigrated to Germany. Val's brother Josef, his wife Josefine, and their children Elena, Georg and Irene live in Offenburg, Germany. His sister Maria, her husband Albert, and their sons Josef and John also live in Offenburg. Val's sister, Audrey Wilson, daughter of Magdalena and John Volk, lives in Okotoks, Alberta. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. PATRICK'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 238 – 2nd Avenue NE, on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Francis Tran, Celebrant. BENDER, BRUCE WAYNE

June 3, 1942 – October 16, 2019
Bruce grew up near the farming community of Hilda, AB, the first-born son of George & Elsie. Farm life included many challenges notwithstanding frigid winters spent guiding siblings (Dennis Bender, Marian Albrecht & Pam) to school on sleds pulled by less than cooperative horses. These experiences helped shape the resolute and responsible man he would become.
At the age of eight he became fascinated with airplanes, a passion which defined his life. Always adventurous with a definite rebellious streak, Bruce began his adult life with Marilynn in 1962, a loving partnership that unfolded over 57 years of marriage. Work as a young man at a chemical plant laboratory preceded a return to formal education at the age of 26 and a move to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta with 2 young daughters (Susan Witt MacPhail, Naomi Bodnar) and a son (Kevin Bender) on the way. Tight budgets, long hours of studying and a cadre of younger university friends, balanced with a growing young family, remarkably led to a Bachelor of Science Degree and a career in management with the City of Edmonton for nearly three decades. Always an avid learner, reader and lover of music, Bruce continued to expand his range of interests after university to include photography, downhill skiing and riding his Harley Davidson. He was never afraid to try anything, at least once and often preferred the road less travelled!
Throughout his lifetime, Bruce savored and excelled in the building, painting and flying of complex and beautiful replica radio-controlled aircraft. Many hours were spent in his shop, at the field flying and travelling throughout North America to compete with his beloved planes. Bruce was always willing to share his well-honed expertise in the shop or over a cup of coffee. Bruce and Marilynn developed and maintained many deep friendships with their amazing family of “flying” friends. Bruce left us unexpectedly and unwillingly, with planes unfinished, jays unfed, roses not wintered and beloved pets devastated. Bruce will be deeply missed by his 10 grandchildren (Ivan and Lara Witt; Venture and Dylan MacPhail; Arden, Ethan and Sophie Bodnar; Kamden, Hudson and Isabella Bender) and his children’s spouses (Calvin MacPhail, Gene Bodnar, Jill Bender) with whom he shared his passion, intelligence and a strong opinion or two. His quiet steadfast love and strength will be forever remembered by Marilynn, his children and Chipper.

“Old pilots never die; they just pass on to a new plane.”

No funeral service by his request, however, a celebration of life will be planned for a later date. To send condolences to the family, please visit
