McCULLEY

With fond memories and heavy hearts, the family of William “Bill” James McCulley announce his passing at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Monday, September 2, 2019 – 28 days short of his 87th birthday. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Loretta; two sons, Duane McCulley (Janet Jensen) of Calgary and Darryl (Carrie) McCulley of Abbotsford, B.C.; two grandchildren, Lucas and Sumner both of Abbotsford; his sister Joyce Kozak of Camrose; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen Pudwell of Okotoks, Betty and Bill Hoff of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Bill was predeceased by two sons in infancy; his parents, Tillie and Sam; and one brother Bob, his wife Rose and their son Greg; his in-laws, John and Louise Pudwell; sister-in-law Margery Pudwell; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Pudwell and Ken Kozak. Bill was born and raised in Medicine Hat. He loved all sports, but hockey was his passion. He played for the local Tigers hockey club, Red Deer Rustlers, Drumheller Miners (this team was inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008). A few years later he was asked to join the Lacombe Rockets when they went on their European tour. He then played for the Portland Buckaroos of the Western Hockey League. The team won the championship the first year in the league, and were inducted into the State of Oregon Hall of Fame in 1990. He returned to Red Deer and later moved his family back to Medicine Hat where went into the Real-Estate business. Hockey was to be a thing of the past, but the Joyline Blades owner, with a little coaxing, persuaded him to “lace up and join the club”. He would refer to those years as the best hockey with the most fun. Bill enjoyed life and had a great senseof humour as his health declined. Several times during the past few months he would often say “this sure doesn’t take the place of a good BBQ steak and a shot of rye” when his wife handed him an energy bar and a bottle of Glucerna. The last couple of years Bill had the privilege of attending the day program at Good Sam’s, enjoying the fellowship and all the special attention provided to him by the caring staff. Those who wish to celebrate Bill’s life are encouraged to tilt a glass in his honour. At Bill’s request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or to the “Day Program” at Good Sam’s. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: pattfh@telusplanet.net subject heading: Bill McCulley, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

WALTER EDMUND MUELLER

January 1, 1936 ~ August 31, 2019

Deeply saddened, Hilda Mueller announces the passing of her beloved husband, Walter Mueller on Saturday, August 31, 2019, at the age of 83 years. Grieving are his much loved stepchildren: Michelle, Stewart, Heather (David), Robin (Ron) and Ava. Missing their Opa are grandchildren: Kirsten, Lauren, Samuel, William and Ella and great-grandson, Jack. Also left to mourn his passing are his brothers and best friends, Horst (Delores) Mueller and Heinz Mueller; Walter’s nieces and nephews and their children, Shelley (Doug) Hamilton and sons, Cole and Reed, Kerri Mueller and sons, Tate and Seth, Lori (Dan) Svoboda, Richard (Maria) Mueller and sons Max, Quinn and Grayson, David (Michelle) Mueller and sons, Cameron and Brian and Robert (Gaia) Mueller all of whom loved Walter and whom he loved with equal measure. Dear to Walter’s heart is his very special Aunt Trudy and her family. Many happy times were spent with brothers and sisters-in-law, Adolf (Margaret) Roth, Helen (Karl) Tessman, Kay (Helmut) Kroll, Norman (Sharon) Frank and Violet Roth. Coffee was always on for his loyal coffee partners as well as for Walter’s dear long-time friend and A&W buddy, Harry Zeller. Walter was predeceased by his loving parents, Edmund and Olga Mueller; sister, Rita; sisters-in-law, Susan Mueller, Anna Fisher and Rose Frank as well as his brothers-in-law, Ron Shurvell and Gottlieb Roth. Walter was born on January 1, 1936, to Edmund and Olga Mueller in Makowisko (Wolshebuden) Poland. In 1945, the family had to flee their war-torn homeland and relocated to Northern Germany. There, Walter received his education and certification as a millwright and machinist. After eight years, the family opted to make Canada their new home, settling in Medicine Hat in 1953. Walter was a young man with many dreams and aspirations. After brief stints at CPR, flour mills and other short-term jobs, while at the same time perfecting his new English speaking skills, Walter was confident and eager to strike out on his own. He began by opening the first automated car wash in Medicine Hat, followed by owning and operating other establishments and real estate holdings at various times. In 1991, he purchased and restored the former Eaton’s building in downtown Medicine Hat and renamed it the Gaslight Plaza. It is now a historic landmark for the city. Walter, along with his wife, loved to sing and mingle with his friends and revisiting his German roots by being a member of the German Canadian Harmony Choir and Club of which he was President for a number of years. Walter and Hilda hosted many choir picnics in their backyard. Bringing family and friends together in their yard for food, music and possibly a swim was one of Walter’s greatest joys. Walter loved God, his family and friends. He had a special fondness for Medicine Hat often mentioning that he would not have wanted to live anywhere else. It was the city that helped him achieve his dreams and where he built his life. Walter was thankful and content. In 2017, dementia became a part of his and his family’s lives. Sunnyview became Walter’s care center, always with his wife by his side. The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers for their kind and committed care. They are truly angels amongst us. Many thanks to Dr. Hirsch and Dr. Simpson for their expertise. Thank you to Pastor Bob Church and his wife, Wanda for their uplifting hymns, prayers and words of encouragement that brought great comfort.

‘We love you always. Rest easy; til we meet again.’

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Monday, September 9, 2019, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Walter’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Church officiating. JEAN ISOBEL CAMERON

Jean Isobel Cameron died peacefully at Carmel Hospice on September 9 with family at her side. She lived a full and joyful life! She cross crossed the country with the Military as the kids grew, met new friends easily and had many good jobs she enjoyed. She and Jim settled in Medicine Hat in 1975. Mom was always concerned about others first and herself last, right up to the end. She brought so much fun and laughter to those around her, and so loved her pets, especially her final pooch, Buddy.
Mom was President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Medicine Hat Legion and organized their Poppy Campaign for 10 years. For that role she was awarded her Life Membership in the Legion, an organization in which both her and Dad were very proud.
She missed Dad and her daughter Lesley terribly when they both died in 2014. She filled that vacant hole in her heart with a new family of friends and staff at the Meadowlands, where she enjoyed living from 2015 for 4 years. She loved everyone in her new home and was loved by many and she was grateful for this phase in her life.
She was moved to Carmel Hospice in early August when her lung cancer needed more attention and care. The family thanks the staff at Carmel for their expert, compassionate and loving care they provided.
We also want to thank Dr. Bao Dang and his staff for their excellent care and ongoing concern for Mom over many years in the treatment of her COPD, and in particular, the last six months as the addition of her lung cancer started to interfer. It was exceptional.
Jean was predeceased by Jim and her daughter Lesley in 2014, and an infant son, Stephen in 1962. She is survived by her son Paul (Marie), her daughter Cheryl (Sheldon Spier) and two brothers, Wayne MacTavish (Sandy) and David MacTavish (Judy). She also leaves her grandchildren Eric (Ashley), Terri (Marc), her great-grandchildren Jacob, Fiona, and Alexa and her son-in-law Michael Archambault.
Join us to celebrate Jean’s life, remember her, and perhaps share a story at the Medicine Hat Lodge, Saamis Ballrooms A&B on Fri., Sept. 13 from 11:00 to 1:00pm. A light lunch will be provided.

GLADYS STROM

Last Saturday saw many long time friends and neighbors join the family of Gladys Strom in Celebration of a long life. The many tributes and hymns gave a sense of peace and tranquility for all in attendance.

A lifetime of memories,
Cherished smiles for all,
A mother’s love is forever
Even after God’s call.
Her Life Lived…
Her Life Cherished…
Her Life Honoured.

1952 ~ 2019
Mr. Gordon Roderick MacNevin, beloved resident and friend of the Alfred Egan Home in Bow Island, passed away on Sunday September 15, 2019, at the age of 67 years, with caring staff members by his side. Gordon was born on March 2, 1952, in Whitehorse, Yukon. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Sylvia MacNevin. In March of 2011, Gordon moved to Bow Island where he settled into the Alfred Egan Home quite quickly. It was his outgoing sense of humor and laughter that gave him a place in their hearts. Gordon was often found playing tricks on the staff members and giving a quiet chuckle in the process. He was a quiet man who watched everything going on around him, enjoyed sitting in the sunshine where he could usually be found under the sunrays of the skylights. Gordon also loved doing anything he could outside. Some of his most memorable adventures were his outings to Camp LG Barnes and his trip to Nova Scotia, travelling with a friend and staff members, spending days sight seeing and staying close to the ocean. Gordon will be missed by the staff and friends whom he came to know as his family at the Alfred Egan Home. A Celebration of Gordon’s life will be held at the Alfred Egan Home, 939 – 1 Street East, Bow Island, on Friday, September 27, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
