1930 ~ JACK SHUPE ~ 2019

John "Jack" Milton Shupe of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Lila Shupe, passed away on Wednesday, April 10th, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Jack leaves to cherish his memory his children, Judy (Denis), Jill (Keith), Jane, Jerry (Nicole) Shupe; four grandchildren, Morgan, Jessica (Dave), Chelsea (David), Megan (Chad); and four great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Emma, Easton and Zade; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Lila; his parents, Wally and Iva Shupe; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Gaylen and Rae, Blaine and Elizabeth and Doug and Lois. Jack grew up in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Sports were always important in the Shupe household, he and his brothers played many sports including baseball, golf and curling. Hockey was where Jack really excelled, and it became more than just a passion but a career. This love of hockey is what brought him to Medicine Hat to play for the Tigers. He fell in love with and married his wife Lila who was his partner in life. As fate would have it, he returned to Medicine Hat to coach the team that he once played for, this was one stop on the journey of coaching that took him to new places and created friendships that spanned time. His time with both the Tigers and the Victoria Cougars were successful endeavors where he took his teams to championships. After hockey he enjoyed time with family, playing with his grandchildren and regular meetings with his coffee friends. These were some of his favorite memories and the people that he connected with daily. Jack loved to reconnect with former players and teammates and was grateful for these bonds. He always recognized how truly lucky he was for the abundance of amazing friends and relationships that he cultivated throughout his lifetime. He looked forward to all of the times that he was able to enjoy these connections. We would like to thank everyone for the love and friendship that was shared with our Dad. 1949 ~ JANE HERN ~ 2019

Mary Jane “Jane” Hern of Medicine Hat passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at the age of 70 years. Jane leaves to cherish her memory her children, Casey (Mandi) Hern and Vandy (Trevor) Bishop; four grandchildren, Nicholas May, Austin Hern, Kane Bishop and Diesel Bishop; three brothers, Jim (Kay) Campbell, John (Donna) Campbell and Bill (Diane) Campbell; four sisters, Tish (Harold) Fieldberg, Cathy Sutherland, Peggy Herman and Judy (Lee) McKenzie; the father of her children, Ben (Kathy) Hern; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jane was predeceased by her parents, Donald “Happy” and Mary Campbell; and twin daughters, Mary Louise and Helen Christine, in infancy. Jane was born in Empress, Alberta on March 26th, 1949. She attended Cavendish school for grades one and two, riding her horse to and from school. Then, when a new school was built in Bindloss in 1957, she was fortunate to be bussed. She took up to Grade 11 in Bindloss, and then went on to Hairdressing School in Medicine Hat in 1967. Jane’s main interests revolved around the weekends, when the family would go to gymkhanas, horse races, rodeos, ropings and horseshows. Jane competed in halter classes, western pleasure, barrel races, pole bending and stake races, in which she won many trophies and ribbons. Then, in 1967, Jane won the Brooks Centennial Rodeo Queen Contest – another highlight of her life. In 1968, Jane married Ben Hern – a rancher and professional rodeo cowboy. They bought their first place in the Bindloss area and lived there for 7 years with no electricity and no running water. They had, “air conditioning when the wind blew and running water when it rained.” They travelled the rodeo circuit for many years. A pick-up truck and camper was their home. In 1975, they moved to a new place, four miles west. “What a mansion!” they thought. Jane followed the Canadian Cowboys Rodeo Circuit, roping and barrel racing. In addition to this, she had a short modelling career where she modeled clothes at the Calgary Inn and Edmonton Plaza for the Canadian Cowboys Rodeo Conventions. In 1979, a boy, Casey Lee was born and in 1981, a girl, Vandy Jane. Following the birth or their kids, rodeo life started to fade and ranch life took over. In addition to this, Jane took Self-Health and Horse Chiropractic courses along with Therapeutic Touch and Reiki. Given her love for animals she used this training to help with animal’s recovery from injuries with a focus on horses. She also attended Dressage lessons in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. She barrel raced at Border Country Rodeos along with Vandy while Casey rode steers and later bulls. Following a divorce from Ben in 1993, Jane continued to stay on the ranch and acquired her own heard of Black Angus cattle. She was a dedicated mother and her whole life centered around her children. She was an amazing woman: thoughtful, kind, caring, generous; but yet determined, passionate and fierce. Even after facing 3 brain hemorrhages, Jane never complained, maintained an incredible will and never lost her love for her children and animals. She was an amazing mother and grandmother, Mom and grandma, we love you and will never forget you! The family would like to thank the incredible staff at Leisure Way Group Home for loving, caring and pampering her for nearly 7 years. A Celebration of Jane’s Life will be held at the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede GRANDSTAND BANQUET ROOM, 2055 – 21st Avenue SE, on Saturday, May 11th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Shane Andrus officiating. 1932 ~ JOHN WILLIAMS ~ 2019

John Harvey “Jack” Williams passed away on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2019 at the age of 86 years. John leaves to cherish his memory his children, Lee (Monty) Shannon, Ken (Kelly) Williams, and Pam (Neil) Fode; grandchildren, Jason Thomson, Michelle (Dave Roberts) Thomson, Cassie (Chris Nickel) Williams, Jamie (Jeremy Manko) Williams, Dru Williams, Jeff (Kristy) Fode, Courtney (Andrew Goodrich) Fode, Shayann (Jordan) Jacksteit,; great-grandchildren, Jaylin, Merek, Bryleigh, Hayven, Jayde, Beck, Vann, Marley, and Jack; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his loving wife, Norma; parents, “Bud” and “Dot” Williams; brother, Don Williams; sisters, Faye Kinsman and Margaret Watson. Jack lived in Langdon on the family farm and went to school there, riding on horseback to and from school (yes, uphill both ways). At the age of 15 years; although his Dad wanted him to come work off the shore of Central America on the rigs with him, he was too young and had to settle for working on land rigs. (Jack always said his first job was shooting woodpeckers from the derrick). He met Norma, and in 1955, they ran off to get hitched in Havre, MT. They made their first home in Pincher Creek, AB, where he worked at the Shell plant. Later on, they moved to Calgary and had a farm where the Deerfoot mall now stands. At that time, Jack was driving truck for Shell up North. Jack and Norma always had riding horses and often went to Montana to buy horses off of the bucking strings. They would break them; both for themselves and to sell. Jack and Norma participated in local Gymkhanas and, in 1962, they were the top male/female competitors. They went on many trail rides; two significant ones being the Centennial Trail Ride from Waterton to Calgary and the endurance ride from Eastend, SK to Medicine Hat. During this time Jack worked for the Alberta Brewery Association where he drove delivery truck for 16 years. As the kids came along, they joined the “cowboy way of life”; riding and enjoying their horses as a family. In 1971, the family moved to Carstairs, AB. Bill and Joan Ullery rented their second house on the home place. Bill, Paul Barnes, and Billy Aikens helped them to build a roping arena, start the Carstairs Roping Club, and just like that, Jack’s love of roping began. Ken joined Jack as his roping partner and “Granny” joined in by being in the timing booth and in the arena as a flagger. In 1976, they moved to Duchess, AB. Jack and Ken continued roping and there they were associated with many clubs. Jack won two saddles and numerous buckles; just to name a few rewards he reaped from his beloved hobby. He was always willing to mentor and lend a helping hand to help anyone get started in roping. He especially enjoyed helping the young guys. He roped with them when no one else would and was even know to spot a few fees along the way. Everyone far and wide knew Odie and her friend “old Jack”. From Duchess, Jack and Norma moved to Medicine Hat. Jack worked for Inland Concrete, collecting awards and good driver bonuses along the way, and making friends wherever he went. Following his retirement, he enjoyed solving the world’s problems with the crowd around the breakfast table at Rustlers and then, Whiskey Creek. He tended to his beloved black colt, Twist, and made sure, Gussy, “the white wolf”, got his share of bacon. Jack greatly appreciated the special group who joined him every Wednesday for lunch and sharing. His greatest joy and comfort, were his kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The friendship and dedication of his longtime friend, Corey, was one of his greatest treasures. A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held at Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Grounds Higdon Hall on Thursday, May 9th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to show their respect, may donate to the Blair Stroh Cowboys for Kids, in Jack’s name. JACQUELINE GIBSON

1917 ~ 2019

Our beloved mother, Jacqueline Collette (nee Swinney) Gibson passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at the grand age of 102 years. Jackie was born in Fort McLeod on January 29, 1917, and raised in the farming and ranching community of Pincher Creek, surrounded by her parents, both sets of her loving grandparents, many cousins, aunts and uncles. She loved the farming and ranching life, as it afforded freedom to ride the open prairies, and get into all kinds of fun and mischief with her many cousins. Jackie was a great dancer, horse back rider, learned piano and violin, and was a consummate seamstress, an art she learned from her mother, Vernal. Her rose garden was often admired in Medicine Hat and she loved to get out every spring to help all of her flowers grow. She fell in love and married Herbert Douglas Gibson on August 23, 1939, and sent him many care packages and letters during his time of service in WWII. They loved each other very much until his death in 1979. As a mom, she loved to sew for her two adventurous daughters, Vicki and Kelly, play clothes and dresses for their Sunday best. She saw to it that her girls always had what they needed, even curling their hair with old fashioned hairdressers’ curling irons, and encouraged their talents with music, art lessons, guidance in sewing and fine needlework, church activities and was our Primary teacher in the LDS faith. To this day we use those talents. Always busy, Jackie loved her friends and neighbours and was always ready to help them out when called upon.
Mother was an advocate of animals rights and their welfare. So concerned that she once took a man to court for beating his little pony who was unable to pull a fully loaded rock sled. She won the case! Always a fighter for good, mother never gave up on anything. Even at 102, she held her own. On the day before her passing she had got up, dressed and walked out to her favourite sitting chair at Legacy Lodge, to read and watch the weather out of the garden window. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the Legacy Lodge staff who tenderly tended to mom and all her needs for the past 5 years. They are exceptional! She is survived by her two daughters, Vicki Kathleen Gibson of Lethbridge, AB, and Kelly Allisandra Groom of Roberts Creek, BC. as well as her grandson, Neil Groom of Roberts Creek, BC. Jackie was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Gibson; her mother, Vernal Swinney; father, John P. Swinney; baby sister, Mary Leah Swinney as well as many family and friends who loved her. A Celebration of Jacqueline’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. ANN KATHERINE KAPPELMAN (NEE BEVAN)

September 12, 1954 ~ May 3, 2019

Ann Kappelman passed away in Medicine Hat on Friday, May 3, 2019, at the age of 64 years. Ann was born in Kerrobert, SK. and was raised in North Battleford, Burstall, and Abbey, SK. Thereafter, Ann moved to Medicine Hat. She made her home there for a number of years before her next move to Hawaii. In her 35 years there, Ann enjoyed every moment of sunshine she could! It was during this time that she worked for Hans at a job that provided her with the opportunity to travel the world. While working for Hans, they developed a strong father/daughter bond which continued when she moved back to Medicine Hat. In February of 2018, Ann moved back to Medicine Hat where she continued to reside until her passing. She had always lived her life to the fullest, had a fantastic sense of humour, and was always positive every time you saw her. Ann loved horses as well as bright, beautiful colours. Her love for colours was evident through the colours she used to paint her home… bright yellow, green and blue! Every moment in Ann’s life was filled with joy and enthusiasm and if it wasn’t there, she created it! Although small in stature, she commanded the attention of those in any room she entered with her big personality. Ann was a firm believer that it was vital to have 7 hugs a day and she always did her best to make sure those around her received theirs . She will live on in the hearts of her family; Toby (Ev), Ruth (Allen), Janice (Mike), Colin (Bonnie), Jay, Jascinta, Cameron George (Jemma), Kaitlyn, Conrad, and Jess. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Joan (Reg). Everyone Ann called ‘friend’ was truly thought of as a part of her family. She had so many friends whom she loved and who loved her, but the family would like to especially acknowledge Adelle. Private interment will be held at a future date. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) Donations may be made to your local SPCA or any animal charity of one’s choosing. He attended High Bank School, completing grade 8, at which time he started his career, working full time on the ranch.

Len was close to Caroline’s siblings – the Greenstein’s, their spouses and their families and they were always welcome at the farm. Airplanes, stationary engines, fixing and repairing farm equipment, drilling wells – Dragon’s Den would have been a go to for Len. Len proudly displayed his antique engines at the Mediicne Hat Exhibition & Stampede for many years right up until the age of 96. Len was generous with his time and would help out neighbors when they needed a hand.

Thanks to the neighbors who helped out these past years as Len and Caroline tried to maintain the ranch. Thank you also to the staff at AgeCare Valleyview, Masterpiece Southland Meadows, and Dr. Van der Merwe. Staff were so kind to dad and always treated him with respect. MARGARET BOWLES

I have witnessed many beautiful sunrises in my life, but the morning of May 2, the horizon was such an blinding sea of bright pink that it literally stopped me in my tracks.
Exhausted from what was thrown on my plate the day before and already putting together my to-dos of the day, I was speechless at what I saw when I came up the stairs at 5:30 a.m. After standing on the front step for a few minutes to take in the amazing view, I set about my business. At 6 the phone rang. It was Belinda calling to tell me that my sister Margaret had gained her angel wings shortly after 5. My heart immediately flooded with an indescribable peace and happiness unlike anything I have felt before. Amid a blaze of pink, I knew I had witnessed my sister’s soul fill with relief and joy at finally being free of the trials she endured here on earth. It had been the most perfect send off. She passed the same way she lived. A beautiful unassuming soul, who never commanded the limelight, but somehow earned it just by being herself. When people die we search for the words to tell the world what an amazing person they were. Yet, as I was trying to prepare this eulogy I didn’t feel a pressing need to do so as I feel comforted by the knowledge that her actions spoke greater than any of my words could. If everyone in this room stood up and said something about Margaret, you would undoubtedly hear that she was smart, she was kind and she was hard-working. She was creative, she was talented and she was dependable. She could plunk out 120 words a minute on the typewriter, without a mistake. She was always well-dressed but she was never fancy. She never spent money on expensive things – unless of course it was the perfect piece that tied everything together. Even then she would debate if there wasn’t some way she could just make it herself. Growing up I often heard about how good Margaret was at doing things. Although Margaret always scoffed at my stories of her perfection, we both knew the drive for perfection was in our blood. After all, from birth our mother instilled in us that there is no point doing a job unless you do it right. Our mom worked hard to give us a place that we were proud to call home. I remember her hiding pennies under the doilies to make sure we dusted properly. She was obsessed with making sure everything matched and looked just so and if it did not we always had to figure out some way to make sure it did. As much as we sometimes hated mom’s perfection, both of us have spent our lives trying to strive for the same level of perfection: We know the value of hard work and having the persistence to never give up. If you don’t know how to do something, you read up on it and teach yourself until you do; We know the joy of thinking outside the box, giving old things new life or finding a cheaper way to accomplish something. And we definitely understood why everything needed to match! For better or worse I believe these family traits are what united us as sisters. As life goes full circle many of these traits have been passed down to our children and our grandchildren. A eulogy for my sister would be incomplete without mention of her husband Keith. The dictionary defines soulmate as a person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner. My brother-in-law Keith was both of those things to my sister. With those two there was no such thing as better half, because they were always one and were incomplete without the other. I was so proud to be part of their family. They had their own little empire north of Maple Creek in the Royal Edward District. They had an impressive herd of cattle – Angus and Limousin cross that they built together from the bottom up. Their herd earned them great respect in the cattle world. They were good neighbours and friends, always willing to lend a hand to anybody who needed it. They were experts at living within their means and Margaret always had her eye on the bottom line. Keith respected and appreciated her so much for that, and even though they talked about low cattle prices and tough times, it was obvious that thanks to Keith’s hard work and Margaret’s keen financial planning they never really knew what rock-bottom was. Margaret put hundreds of miles on her little Ford Fiesta driving to work at Orr’s Law Office. When she wasn’t working she was out in the corral with Keith, moving cows or tending to her garden or her flowers. The ground was sandy there, but Margaret had a knack for making things grow – especially her columbines and other self-seeding perennials, which brought her great joy, likely because it meant she didn’t have to spend money buying bedding plants at the store. She was always sewing, knitting, crocheting or doing cross-stitch and she was always doing books for somebody. In income tax season she would work many extra hours, but still be ready for branding by the first Sunday in May. Although Keith put most of the meals on the table, Margaret always did her share by peeling the potatoes in the morning before she left for work. On the weekends in the summer she could be found stewing rhubarb or canning peaches – rhubarb slush was her speciality. Keith and Margaret were an amazing couple and they were so proud of their daughters Belinda and Michelle. When their two son-in-laws, Sheldon and Shane and my husband Ivan entered the picture, Keith and Margaret embraced them like the sons they never had. When the grandkids came along it was hard to miss the pride they felt. There was always fresh cookies and ice cream when they came to visit, and grandpa and grandma always took time to show them things. Their eldest grandchild Jordyn says it was decorating cakes with Margaret that inspired her to be a professional baker and the boys loved listening to their grandpa talk about the cattle. It was Margaret who taught Emery how to ride a bike. All of Keith and Margaret’s grandchildren are turning out to be incredible kids and adults. Some would say it is because they had such wonderful grandparents. Not once did any of us hear them fight. After Keith passed Margaret retired, moved to town and remarried. Her and Merv were active members in their church and she got much enjoyment from the services and the fellowship she shared with their church family. The last years of her life were difficult, but Margaret dug in and endured them with her same unassuming persistence, which has inspired her granddaughter Codee to become an RN. She rarely complained and she always had a smile for everyone who visited. In many ways her last years, were among the most peaceful in her life. Death can be a horrible thing, or it can be a wonderful thing. Today we find great JOY in knowing that Keith and Margaret are together again. We feel HOPE in knowing that Margaret has been given the chance to live again, to create, to laugh, to quietly make a difference, just the way she did on earth. The long goodbye is over and the final page has been turned but it won’t be the final chapters that we remember, but rather all the wonderful chapters before. What a beautiful book my sister has written. How fitting that my parents named her Margaret – Joy – Hope.
As read by her sister Anne.

During her lifetime, Tay lived in Abbotsford, Mission City, Lethbridge, Diamond City, rural Taber and 70 years in Medicine Hat. She was married with two daughters when WWII broke out and Canadian-born Japanese Canadians were forcibly evacuated from the Fraser Valley. To stay together as a family they chose to relocate to Southern Alberta and help farm sugar beets, enduring harsh conditions. In 1949, the family moved to Medicine Hat when the wartime restrictions (regarding property purchase and travel for Japanese Canadians) were lifted. Tay helped pioneer irrigated farming in Southern Alberta, growing potatoes, onions and corn as well as growing test plots for the Lethbridge and Brooks Agriculture Experimental Stations. In 1973, she sold her dry land property to her newly formed company, Town and Country Packers, and captured the potato packaging market in the Medicine Hat area, serving all wholesale outlets and keeping very busy all year round. Tay officially retired from farming in 1989 – 90 and continued her volunteer activities. A member of the Medicine Hat Quota Club since 1964, Tay also has been a member of the Medicine Hat Business and Professional Women’s Club since 1978. From 1986 to 1989, she was a board member for Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism. Tay’s proudest volunteer achievement was being awarded one of 25 “Citation for Citizenship” certificates from the Federal Government in 1991 for her efforts to promote multiculturalism through the Medicine Hat Multicultural Folk Arts Council which was presented at a special ceremony in Ottawa. Tay’s many years of volunteering received many other local, provincial and federal honours. The family would like to thank Riverview Care Centre for the care provided to Tay during her final months. A Celebration of Tay’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with a time of fellowship and refreshments thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. Gena made an impact on everyone she met. Her kindness extended not only to family and friends but also to those she assisted by volunteering in care centres and at church functions. The family cabin at Clear Lake is where she was the most joyful and content; perfection was having a dog on her lap in the sun. The family is eternally thankful for the care Gena received at The Carmel Hospice at St Joseph’s Home and also the caring staff at Meadowlands ‘Revera’. The funeral service will be held in St. Barnabas Anglican Church (635 4th Street SE) on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. Oz Lorentzen officiating. SANTOS, JOSEPH

February 7, 1939 – Bombay (Mumbai), India

May 11, 2019 – Cochrane, Alberta

An outstanding figure who enriched the lives of many in the community of Medicine Hat, Alberta, for over 40 years, passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 11, 2019 in Cochrane, Alberta.
Joe Santos was born on February 7, 1939 and raised in Bombay (Mumbai), India. His family heritage hailed from the predominantly catholic state of Goa. To his articulate and elegant family members in Goa and Bombay he was affectionately known as “Joe-boy”.
He was predeceased by his father, John Marshall D’Souza Santos; his mother Rose Adeline D’Souza Santos; his older sister Yolanda (Joe Monteiro); and his beloved aunty Maggie and uncle Jock Mendoza; and his cousin Tony Santos.
Joe is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 55 years, Irene; son Paul (Marina); daughter Pamela (Chris); proud grandsons Lewis and Evan; younger sister Prisca (Walter) Fernandes; niece Joanita; nephews Sonjoy, Floyd, Glenn, and Dion. He will be fondly remembered by all of his in-laws from the McAtear and McCafferty families in Scotland and England.
He was somewhat of a “career and cultural polymath”; he was educated, enjoyed life, and contributed to the culture in three different countries; India, United Kingdom, and Canada where he was a chef-de-cuisine, welder/ foreman, and finally a high school teacher.
He obtained his B.Ed at age 45 in 1984 and was so pleased when he secured a full time position at Medicine Hat High School in 1992. After retirement, he was a regular fixture on the substitute circuit until he was 76 years old!! He was well respected and loved by his students, neighbours, soccer players, and those who benefitted from his assistance and friendship. To many he was quite simply a gentleman, scholar, and Renaissance man.
Always the giver and never the taker, Joe was known for his warm-heartedness, exceeding generosity, infectious smile, and unyielding desire to advance the fortunes of others, particularly those on the down side of advantage. He was a ubiquitous and prominent figure in the volunteer community: a successful boys and girls soccer coach, director, and vice president in the Medicine Hat Minor Soccer Association; active member in the catholic community assisting many refugees and immigrants of all walks with the challenges of being a newcomer; and numerous other pursuits related to the well-being of others.
Joe’s final four years with Irene were spent in Calgary being close to daughter Pamela and the medical expertise that was required due to his aortic stenosis and onsetting dementia – leaving his neighbours and social network in Medicine Hat was challenging for him.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive NW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, May 18, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Brian Hubka officiating. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Condolences may be forwarded through http://www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
If friends so desire, the family encourages memorial donations to a charity of their choice.
Joe’s family wishes to thank the staff of the cardiology and neurology teams at the Foothills Hospital and all of the medical community that attended to him.
In living memory of Joseph Santos, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

STRAUSS

Loretta June Strauss, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Strauss and four of her five children; Neil (Judy) Strauss, Brian (Cheryl) Strauss, Kathy (Ralph) Korner and Karla (Gerrit) Vermeer. She was predeceased by her daughter Lynnetta. She was blessed with nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews – all who brought sunshine and joy to her life. She often celebrated God’s faithfulness towards her family and saw her loving legacy bloom in front of her.
Loretta was born June 19, 1933 in Odessa, Washington. She loved growing up as a farm girl. She was predeceased by her parents Adam and Lydia Roth, sisters Elsa (Walt) Tanke, Martha (Perc) Henkleman, brothers Bob (Evelyn) Roth and Delbert (Marj) Roth and brother-in-law Wes Henkleman. She is survived by her sister Ruby Henkleman in Oregon and sister-in-law Ella Binder in B.C.
Loretta accepted Jesus at a young age and was baptized at Odessa Baptist Church. After graduating from Marlin High School she moved to Edmonton to attend Christian Training Institute (CTI). It was here she met and married Henry Strauss in 1953. They worked in Edmonton for one year, then moved to a farm in the Sandy Point where Loretta helped Henry develop their farming enterprise for 25 years. Loretta and Henry lovingly raised their family on the farm. They were in involved in the Burstall and Hilda communities as active members at Hilda Baptist Church. Loretta joyfully served in ladies, children’s and music ministries. In 1977, they moved to Medicine Hat making Temple Baptist Church the hub of their fellowship and social activities. The Thursday morning Bible study group was a regular commitment and joy to her in recent years.
Loretta enjoyed travelling with Henry. Their trips took them across Canada, many parts of the USA, Africa, Cuba, Israel, Mexico, Panama Canal and Hawaii. In 2012, they moved into a condo in Heritage Heights, where Loretta was involved on the social committee. She was a voracious reader of fact or fiction inspirational books, often sharing tidbits she had learned in loving notes, emails or cheerful phone conversations.
Loretta was a loving and faithful wife to Henry. Her sparkly, supportive approach as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother was priceless to her family. As a ‘chatty’ warm friend, she brightened so many lives around her. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed!

LYLE WADE REINHELLER

January 16, 1957 ~ May 21, 2019

Lyle Wade Reinheller passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the age of 62 years. He was predeceased by his father, Albert Reinheller. Lyle leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Eileen Reinheller; brother, Lee (Corili) and their children, Justin, Char (Mike) and their children Karleigh and Addison; Amber (John) and their daughter, Miaya; sister, Della (Carmon) and their daughters, Jennifer (Charles) and their children, Melody and Benjamin; Kristy (Brendan); sister, Angela and her children, Savanna, Jessica (Josh) and their children, Alize, Bishop, Korbin and Kaine. Lyle was born on January 16, 1957, in Medicine Hat. His family moved from Richmound, Saskatchewan to Medicine Hat in 1967. Lyle attended George P. Vanier, a school for persons with disabilities. He later attended the Kinsmen Training Centre as well as Redi Enterprises for life skills and job training. At 18 years of age, Lyle moved out of his parents’ home, living in various group homes and after a number of years in the apartment training program, he moved into his own apartment where he lived independently for his adult life. He was so very proud to have his own apartment; he truly loved his independence. Lyle loved hockey… he was a super fan of the Flames and Oilers and one of the MH Tigers biggest fans, sitting behind the player’s bench as a season ticket holder for more than 30 years. Then there was baseball… Lyle loved his Toronto Blue Jays! He loved to go camping, fishing and sitting by the campfire. Lyle took great pride in having a job and he worked for various businesses including Sidestreet, Tony Romas and Tim Horton’s. He bowled a great game; loved to golf and was a proud member of the Moose Lodge, playing pool in their league; but there was nothing like the love he had for his family. Getting together for family celebrations, especially birthdays, brought him so much joy. Lyle loved being surrounded by those who truly loved him back. Then there was Christmas and Santa – the build up to Christmas Day and opening gifts was a magical time, not to mention getting all dressed up in his suit and tie and dancing the night away at the annual Redi Christmas party. Wearing his cowboy hat and going to the night shows during Stampede was a special annual event for him. He loved playing his records, watching reruns of MASH and of course going for coffee at Tim’s with his favorite people. Lyle just simply loved love. He loved his mom and dad, his big brother and his favorite sisters and he also had a special place in his heart just for Crystal. He was a gentle soul; humble and kind and wanted nothing more than for everyone to be happy and nice to one other. For those he loved; he gave the biggest of hugs, never afraid to show how much you meant to him. Our family was blessed to share our lives with this very special man. We feel blessed that Lyle shared his life with us. We’re going to miss our “mouse”. World Down Syndrome Day is March 21. This day will forever have more meaning. A private graveside service was held at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Redi Enterprises, CORE Association or to St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice. Meinrad then took a position as an elevator agent for Federal Grain and Pool. In 1976, Meinrad and Bertha purchased the grocery store in Abbey and named it Hammel’s Store. They took great pride in the family run business until 1995 when they moved to the family farm south of Lemsford, farming there with his sons until 2009 before retiring to Medicine Hat. Meinrad was a man of very few words and saved most of them for teasing his grandchildren, especially when they least expected it. He loved the farm life immensely and was often found humming while he worked around the farm. Meinrad enjoyed his life in the condo and his favourite pastime was playing cards or pool with his many friends. As per Meinrad’s wishes, a private family time of remembrance will be held. 1936 ~ PETER FUNK ~ 2019

Peter K. Funk, beloved husband of Shirley Funk of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, May 5th, 2019 at the age of 83 years. Peter also leaves to cherish his memory one son, Wesley (Julie) Funk; three daughters, Peggy (Bernie) Petke, Kathy (Bill) Swenson and Dawna (Clynt) Funk; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Mary, Liz and Irene; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Mary Funk; and two sisters, Linda and Hilda. Peter (affectionately known as Sonny by his mother and sisters) was the only son amongst 6 children. Dad’s upbringing on the farm instilled a deep, hard work ethic that he would have for his entire life. Dad quit school at age 14 to work the farm to help support his mother and sisters. Peter married Shirley Silver in October 1957 and by October 1958 they had started their family. As a young man Dad made his living as a farm hand, heavy equipment operator on a road crew and when old enough a truck driver. There began Dad’s love for long haul trucking. Dad very proudly drove a truck for more than 50 years and continued working until he was 76 years old at which point he became a tomato gardener, always in competition with his son-in-law Bill to see who grew the biggest and the best. The only thing Dad loved more than driving was his family. He was so very proud of his grandchildren and always kept up with what the kids were doing. He was always available to help out no matter what the chore or who it was for. He was always telling us he had to look out for the “old people” in his neighborhood. Dad had the biggest heart and the best sense of humour which we will all miss dearly. Go make the miles Dad. We love you. The Funeral Service will be held at GERMAN CANADIAN HARMONY CLUB (Harmony Hall), 1 – 1st Street SE, Redcliff, on Saturday, June 1st, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Gary W. Goran officiating.
