ALBERTA THOMPSON

1918 ~ 2019

Alberta May Thompson passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the age of 100 years. At the time of her passing she was a resident of the AgeCare Valleyview Seniors Community, where she had been living for the past 10 years. Alberta is survived her daughter, Jacqueline Bishop (Patrick) of Medicine Hat; her son, Barry Thompson of Edmonton as well as grandsons, Stephen Bishop (Eva) of Paris, France, Ian Bishop of Medicine Hat, and Christopher Thompson (Yuan) of Ottawa, Ontario. She is also survived by her great-grandson, Léonard Bishop of Paris, France; great-granddaughter, Alina Thompson of Ottawa, Ontario as well as many cherished family members in both Canada and England. Alberta was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) Thompson, her son, Robert Thompson; daughter-in-law, Edna Thompson; brothers, Earl and Ronald Gillett and sister, Grace Swanson. Alberta was born in Medicine Hat and attended Alexandra High School before going on to work at the glass factory in Redcliff and the Medicine Hat Greenhouse. It was there, tending the roses in the greenhouse that sparked Alberta’s lifelong passion for gardening. She loved her flowers and her garden was always beautiful! Alberta met the love of her life at a dance in Medicine Hat. John (Jack) Thompson was stationed in Medicine Hat as a member of the Number 34 Service Flying Training School which was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Jack and Alberta were married in May of 1943, but soon after their union John was sent back into active duty in England. Alberta was pregnant with their first child, Bob at that time, and as fate would have it, the pair were not reunited until their son was two years old. When the war ended, Alberta travelled by train with her toddler to Halifax where she boarded a ship bound for England to be reunited with her husband. This was quite an undertaking for a woman who had never travelled more than a few hundred miles from home. Leaving her friends and family behind, she bravely made her way to her new life in England, making friends along the way with other women who were also travelling to join their husbands. Alberta and Jack lived in England for two years before returning to Canada; first to Vauxhall and then to Edmonton a few years later. They were married for 60 years and all through their marriage they loved to dance, especially ballroom dancing. They were such beautiful dancers that people would stop to watch them as they gracefully glided across the dance floor. Alberta was a devoted mother and a wonderful homemaker, focusing all of her attention on making her home a happy and warm place. She loved company and cooked many delicious meals for friends and family. When she wasn’t cooking, caring for kids or tending to her garden, Alberta wrote poetry about special events in the lives of her friends and family. She was a kind and caring person who would go out of her way to lend a helping hand to those in need. Alberta never had an unkind word for anyone and always saw the good in everyone she met. She never complained about anything or anyone at any time. She truly was an is an inspiration! Special thanks go out to Dr. Bratvold for his kindness and compassion throughout mom’s later years. He would always take the time to talk and listen to her and she always had a sparkle in her eye in his presence. Thanks also go out to the staff at AgeCare Valleyview for their excellent and dedicated care. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, , 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, April 5, 2019, between 7:00 p.m and 8:00 p.m. The Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, on Saturday April, 6, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend David Pollard officiating. 1964 ~ STACEY McLEOD ~ 2019

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stacey Edward McLeod, age 55 years, with his loving wife, Sandy by his side, on Monday, April 1st, 2019 after a brief but valiant fight with cancer. Anyone who knew Stacey knows he had two loves, his family and his pipes: wife, Sandy McLeod; five children, Logan (Cara) McLeod, Rochelle (Ben) Jones, Courtney Rudichuk, Cassandra Swiegers (Corey Davidson) and Stacey McLeod; his mother, Dorothy Page; seven grandchildren, Dante, Cayden, Whitney, Charleigh, Corbin, Ryker, and Rixten; and his loving sidekick, Deuce. Stacey was predeceased by his father, Grant McLeod; and his two brothers, Bob Mcleod and Reg Mcleod. Stacey moved his family to Bassano in 1997 where they got to enjoy the country life he had enjoyed as a child in Saskatchewan. Here he had the great pleasure of raising three beautiful daughters and two grandsons while building his career in the oilfield. As work dried up, he had to travel farther for work but still managed to make family his priority. Unfortunately, much to his regret, Stacey missed out on much of the life of his children from his first marriage, but they were always in his heart. There wasn’t much time for play between work and family, but Stacey always enjoyed time fishing on the Shuswap. Each winter him and Sandy would sneak away to a beach for Stacey to enjoy his other pleasure—scuba diving. Stacey had a lifelong love of pipes. He started his career as an insulator. When he conquered this challenge, he moved onto pipefitting and continuing the climb to consultant where he spent many years working all over the province. He was greatly respected in his field and met many good friends along the way. Stacey proudly ended his career as a Facility and Pipeline Inspector for Inception Exploration Ltd. A private time of remembrance will be held. Memorial gifts in Stacey’s memory may be made to your local S.P.C.A or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5. She enjoyed an active and happy childhood there and in the Cypress Hills with her family, her aunts, uncles and many cousins. After leaving school, Margo worked for a time at Birks jewellery store in Calgary. It was on the train during one of her trips home that she met a young radio announcer, Tom Gunter, who she married. She moved to Medicine Hat in the 1950s, made a home, raised two kids and lived there the rest of her life. Margo loved entertaining her family’s many friends and neighbours and will be remembered for her Christmas Eve BINGO parties begun on 10th Street more than 50 years ago. She loved camping and planning driving holidays around North America, but more than anything cherished her summers in “the Hills” in southwest Saskatchewan. After she met and married Don Weiss in 1980, her love of travel expanded, as did her passion for horses and life on their farm just south of the Medicine Hat city limits. She threw herself into pitching bales, cleaning stalls and assisting with Don’s show horses. In her final years, Margo found comfort in visits and walks with many friends, particularly Mary and Shirley, and in the wonderful staff at Good Samaritan. EICHELBAUM

Ernst Oswald Eichelbaum passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at the age of 81years, beloved husband of the late Peggy Eichelbaum. He leaves to cherish his memory three children Mani Eichelbaum; Trevor (Crystal) Eichelbaum (Kalia, Gaetana, Anton); Nik (Jamie) Eichelbaum (Axel, Nikola, Katie, Alli); one brother Peter (Annemarie) Eichelbaum; two sisters, Barbara Watson, Ute (Lynn) Thacker and one sister-in-law Pat Ley as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Peggy Eichelbaum on June 5, 1991 and one son Kristoff on April 22, 2013. Ernst Oswald Eichelbaum was born a German citizen on June 11th, 1937 in Tanganyika, Africa to parents Richard R. Ernst and Erika (nee Ueberuck). In 1939, the family was deported to Germany. Ernie spent his early years in the most hostile climate on earth, WW2 Germany. In 1955, the family was fortunate to receive refugee status from Canada, where they settled, farming near Bow Island. In 1974, Ernie married the love of his life, Peggy Ley. Together they worked hard on the farm and began to raise four sons, Mani, Trevor, Nikolas, and Kristoff. Peggy introduced him to vehicle restoration, a hobby that he passed on to his children. Ernie’s love for cars formed many friendships within the Medicine Hat Vintage Vehicles Club and Model T Ford Club. In 1991, after Ernie lost his wife after a courageous battle with cancer, Ernst continued to raise his boys and ensure that the farm continued to operate. In 2013, he lost his youngest son Kris to suicide. Even still, he continued to soldier on, now with the light of his grandchildren to tease, love, spoil, and enjoy.
Ernie was a compassionate and caring person. He gave his everything for his family and was always humble and logical in his thoughts and actions. He worked hard throughout his life and never asked for a hand up. He was a widely trusted and respected person to his family, friends, and community. Farming was his career but family was his life. SERGEANT

After a valiantly fought battle with pneumonia Brad chose to go home rather than live his life with the options given for life. The son of Jim and Claire Sergeant, and the brother of Laura, David, Pam and Anj we will dearly miss him. Like his father he had a phenomenal memory and loved to socialize. His sense of humour and endless jokes made him a joy to be around. Myotonic Dystrophy effected his speech, legs and hands but he never complained. He adjusted his life accordingly, from playing Tiny Mite hockey to later coaching Tiny Mite and as the disease progressed-his electric wheel chair. Brad was born January 6, 1962 and passed away at the Red Deer ICU April 4, 2019. In honour of his life a memorial service will be held at First Assembly of God, on May 11 at 2 o'clock. We thank you for your prayers, they were truly appreciated. Brad left looking forward to meeting his Savior.

RINKE, Mata Alvina

On April 9, 2019, Mata left us to join her predeceased infant sister Bernice Wanda, parents Emanuel and Ida Bilau, and husband John Rinke. Born April 17, 1921 on a farm in the Stone District, Saskatchewan, she is survived by her sister Dorothy Helen Sitter, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, as well as extended or inherited family members. Mata was a strong, quiet lady with a playful streak that only a few ever witnessed. She loved to travel, loved flowers, and when she was driving, loved her luxury cars. More than any of that, she loved her friends. We thank the staff at River Ridge Seniors Village for the love and care they provided Mata in her final years, and for the extension of that support to everyone that visited her. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Diaconal Minister Lila deWaal officiating. Interment will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery. Remembering Someone Very Special

Tino DeValter

Aug 17,1933- April 17, 2014

It broke our hears to lose you,
but you did not go alone.
A part of us went with you,
the day God took you home.
If tears could build a stairway,
and heartaches make a lane,
we'd walk our way to heaven,
and bring you back again.
In life we loved you dearly,
in death we love you still,'
in our hearts you hold a place
no one could ever fill

DR. BRENT SLOBODIN

Dr. Brent Slobodin, a dedicated husband, loving father, historian, rock and roll fanatic, and community builder passed from sudden renal failure on April 15, 2019 at the age of 61, in Whitehorse, Yukon. Brent was born in Medicine Hat, found his heart in Kingston, and made a home in Whitehorse.

Brent is survived by his wife Megan (née McDonald), his sons Conal (Quinn Slobodin); of Ottawa, and Kieran (Andrea Davidson) of Toronto, his beloved granddaughter Freya, his siblings Belinda Benn, Debra Wickham (Dean), and Darrell Slobodin (Rhonda) of Medicine Hat, his best friend Piers McDonald (Ofelia Andrade) of Whitehorse, and a large extended family throughout the country. Brent was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Patsy Slobodin of Medicine Hat.

Brent was born May 25, 1957. A boisterous child, voracious reader, and intrepid young man, his passion for history and sport consumed him. Brent earned his PhD in History and Foreign Policy from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. It was there, at graduate school where he met and fell in love with Megan, who became his wife (August 7, 1982) and lifelong companion.

Brent was, first and foremost, a thinker. He loved debating politics and holding forth on history and music. He dedicated his career to advancing education, devolution, and training in the territory. He was a champion for First Nation education and self- governance and was integral to the creation of the territory’s immigration and labour market landscape. Brent was the Yukon Appointee for the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board in 2017.

Everyone remembering Brent talks about how he encouraged them in one way or another to get involved in something grander than themselves.

Anyone who met Brent knew he cared about his community and its history. A lifelong proponent of the Yukon’s Heritage, he led efforts at all levels of government to preserve its history and culture. He was a passionate community activist and worked tirelessly for affordable housing and education. He loved and had deep care for animals, always concerned for creatures most in need. After all, he was a hapless Habs, Jays and Cowboys fan to the end.

Brent was most invested in his family. If there is one accomplishment by which he would want to be remembered, it would be his sons. They are his proudest legacies. He lives on through them, and instilled in them the value of community involvement, hard work, and fatherhood.

A Celebration of Life was held April 25, 2019 at the Coast High Country Inn Ballroom in Whitehorse, Yukon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Brent’s name to the Yukon Humane Society: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/humane-society-yukon/
