1936 ~ DOUG WAGNER ~ 2019

Douglas Dwayne Wagner passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at the age of 82 years. Born on September 21, 1936 to Jess and Rosa Wagner on the farm near Senate, Saskatchewan, he was the youngest of five children.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years Jeannine; his two sons, Clint and Clayton (Christie); grandchildren, Kiaya and Piper; and great grandchildren, Sebastian and Oliver; double cousin, Keith Wagner (Mary) and Iva Jean Wagner; sister-in-law, Addie Wagner; brother-in-law, John Railton (Lynn); sister-in-law, Jacqueline Webster (Jim); and numerous nieces, nephews and single and double cousins, too numerous to name.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jess and Rosa; brothers, Dale Wagner (Eve), Martin Wagner (Dorothy); sisters, Mary Messmer (Dominick), Norma Popick (Stan); double cousins, Jack Wagner (Jean), Maloa Stewart (Bob), Harry Wagner (Elenoir), Sharon Geiger (Joe) and Ken Wagner; single cousins, Frankie Wagner and Mildred Lea (Jake); brother-in-law, David Railton (Elizabeth); and sister-in-law, Marie Thorton (Lynn).
Dad loved ranching. Anything to do with animals, from breaking horses, calving the cows, branding and roundup. He took his education at Zentner and Senate schools. The teacher in grade 8 agreed to pass him if he promised to quit school. He worked on the family ranch for several years then he met and married a black haired little french girl who surprisingly was a teacher. Jeannine and Douglas were together for almost 63 years of marriage, moving from place to place for jobs and ultimately purchasing a ranch at Senate only 6 miles from the family farm.
He participated in many of the groups and clubs such as the PFRA committee, Rink committee, 4-H and the sales ring board.
He drove school bus for many years and had a special commentary on the roads leading to and from the hills. He enjoyed the people but found winter much less stressful when he moved to the Govenlock route.
He retired from ranching in 1997 and moved to Medicine Hat where he started a new chapter, golfing, bowling and fishing with Stan. He made numerous excursions to Vegas, Moose Jaw, Atlantic Canada, England and points in the United States.
He enjoyed going out to Clint's ranch to work with cows and horses and to thin out the ever-present varmints. He purchased a horse for Piper. He had Piper's mare bred. It was great for Dad as he always thought that foals were the 2nd most beautiful things on earth, of course Mom was #1.

LORRAINE CARLIER

December 21, 1928 ~ June 4, 2019

It is with profound sadness the family of Lorraine Rita Carlier announce her passing on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the age of 90 years. She was born on December 21, 1928, on an usually warm day in Athabasca, AB. Lorraine and her sister, Ruth grew up with wonderful parents; mom, Jean, a feisty little Irish girl and dad, Rosario, a feisty little Frenchman and five first cousins who lived down the road. She walked four miles to school, skied, skated and loved to dance. Lorraine was optimistic, fearless and classy from her earrings to her heels. She was always put together well and always dignified.
Lorraine graduated from Grade 12 at 16 years old. In 1947, at the age of 18, she began working at the Athabasca Imperial Bank with her sister and continued working there until 1951. One day in 1951, while having lunch with a friend she met a good looking 18 year old Wallace ‘Wally’ Carlier from Val Marie, SK., who was working on construction. It was instant attraction! In July 1952, they drove to Calgary with plans to meet her parents and take in the Stampede. Instead they decided to elope; arriving in Great Falls, Montana in time to buy a license, get blood tests, rings, a minister to marry them and along with a witness. They never did have a picture of the day, but there are 60 years of pictures after that day to treasure.
Wally worked in construction and in the bush so they moved many times in Alberta where in 1954, Rhonda Jean and in 1955, Wallace ‘Darryl’ Ross were born. In 1960, they were living near Bracken, SK., when Lindsey Lloyd was born. By 1961, they settled permanently a mile north of Val Marie and continued farming and ranching. Lorraine helped with everything on the farm, made great meals especially butter tarts (Wally’s favorite) and sewed beautiful clothes for herself and the children. She worked at the Credit Union for a few years until she was hired as Village Secretary from 1964-1991. Lorraine cared about people and her adopted little town, volunteering on many committees.
When she retired from the village office, they moved to Medicine Hat. Lorraine loved her cozy little house on Rossland Drive S.E. and her wonderful neighbours there who helped shovel snow, mow and make sure she was okay. Lorraine worked for a few years at Darryl & Jan’s trucking company and enjoyed it. In her late 60’s, she completely changed gears and for seven years babysat Lindsey and Vinee’s four children. Lindsey bought her a mini-van and the kilometers piled up as she took them to hockey, skating, swimming and school activities all the while keeping up with all the awards, grads, convocations and lives of her other grandchildren. She also drove many kilometers to Swift current to visit Rhonda, Lorne and Wally on the farm.
When Lorraine retired for good at the age of 80 years, she spent 2-4 days a week playing crib acquiring a bunch of new pals; lovely people like, Cheryl and Ethel who called and visited with her right to the end. Lorraine sold her house in 2018 (following two summers of radiation treatments) and moved to an apartment in Chinook Village. She loved it there and had more people to visit with. She tried to stay enthusiastic but she slowly began to fade.
Lorraine is survived by her children; Rhonda (Lorne) Veitch, Darryl (Janet) Carlier, Lindsey (Vinee) Carlier; grandchildren, Melissa (Monty) Scory, Stacey Carlier, Lindell (Daniela) Veitch, Keelan (Nancy) Veitch, Jordan Carlier, Chelsey Carlier (Wacey), Tristan Carlier, Ciara Carlier; great-grandchildren, Madison and Mason Scory, Shay Carlier, Ivy McCallum, Liam Veitch, Zoe and Daphne Veitch; her dear sister, Ruth West; loving cousins, June Gora and family, Louise (Paul) Kavulok and family, Caroline LaPorte and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Rosario and Jean LaPorte (1990); husband, Wallace Carlier (2011); brother-in-law, Ron West (1978); niece, Carol West Petit (2015); aunt, Agnes and uncle, Arthur; cousins, Bob, Edna and daughter, Linda, Art LaPorte.
If we had a second chance
We’d tell you again how proud
We were to have you guide our lives.
If we had a second chance
We’d tell you again we love you
And beg you not to go.
Words cannot express how much we will miss you forever mom, grandma and great-grandma. Lorraine’s life will be celebrated privately by the family. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be directed to a charity on one’s choice.

EVA UNREINER

1935 ~ 2019
Eva Marie Unreiner passed away from congestive heart failure on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at the age of 83 years. She was loved and will be remembered always by her husband of 63 years, Edward Unreiner and their daughters; Peggy (Dave) Curthoys, Cathy (Drew) Drinnan, Maureen (Guy) Woelfle, Mary-Jane (Ed) Templeton along with her grand-children, Leigh (Tyler), Jocelyn, Angela, Nicole, Grace and Lloyd. Eva will be reunited with her cherished first born baby girl. She was the eldest daughter of Joseph† and Catherine† Schlachter and grew up on the family farm near Etzikom along with her brothers, Tony, Andy, Robert, George†, and sisters, Rosella and Jacquie. Left to mourn are her extended Schlachter and Unreiner (Ralph† and Rose†) families. Eva was a strong independent woman who wanted more for her girls than she had. You were lucky to have her in your corner. She was a talented seamstress and demonstrated her creativity in many different forms notably her stained glass work. The same precision and attention to detail she devoted to her time as lab technician at Maple Leaf Mills (before and after she was a stay at home mom) resulted in her excellent cooking skills. Eva was insightful, witty and had a great sense of fun. She faced her lengthy illness with fortitude. Eva unselfishly gave us her love and the gift of a lifetime of memories. Our sadness is tempered with her peace and the thought of her joyfully dancing again. To honour Eva’s wishes the family will celebrate her life with a private Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Parish. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Eva’s name may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, #100 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB., T2N 1Z6 (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) Honoured to serve the family is

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Erlinda Del Carmen Urbina in the early hours of June 5, 2019 in Medicine Hat, AB, surrounded in love by her children. Erlinda was a woman of faith and it was her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that carried her through to the end. ZABLOCKI, Joyce Karen (nee Ainscough)

September 5, 1938 – June 9, 2019
Joyce Karen Zablocki passed away peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the age of 80 years, in Calgary, AB. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Peter (Tracey) Zablocki, of Whitby, ON, and Jennifer (Neil) Devine, of Calgary, AB; granddaughters Edie, Nuala and Agnes; brother-in-law Ken (Natalie) Zablocki, niece Shauna (Seann) Eldan, and nephew Chris (Reece) Zablocki of Calgary, AB; her cousin Merilyn Browning, of Salt Lake City, UT; and many more dear friends and family. She was predeceased by her husband Ronald Zablocki and parents Frank & Leah Ainscough.
Joyce was born on September 5, 1938 to Frank and Leah Ainscough. She was raised in Calgary, spending her younger years in Mission and later moving with her parents to their new home in Windsor Park. She often told stories of biking to school at Cliff Bungalow and spending warm summer nights swimming with friends in the Elbow River. Upon graduating from Western, she attended SAIT to study drafting. As there was not much work for draftswomen in the mid-50s, she worked as a teller at the Royal Bank. During this time, she was introduced to Ronald through work friends. He soon became her loving husband of 56 years. After getting married, they moved to Bozeman, MT where Joyce worked in the University Library and Ron finished his Education Degree. They stayed in Montana while Ron taught school, but soon Medicine Hat became their home. They intended to make their way back to Calgary but fell in love with Medicine Hat and made it their home for over 50 years.
Joyce worked at River Heights School as a teacher’s assistant, at Raber’s and later at Theresa Marie’s. She loved working with children and formed close friendships with the people she met through her work. Joyce adored animals and loved her pets, Max, Duffy, Shadow, Tino, & Maggie. She and Ron enjoyed musical theatre, with Joyce singing in the choir and helping with costumes over the years. They enjoyed travelling with friends to the US, with special fondness for Big Fork and San Francisco. Joyce joined Jennifer in Europe for two weeks in 2002 where they visited Paris and traveled through France together. She referred to it as her trip of a lifetime! She devoured books quietly and loved visiting with her close friends. She was kind, gentle, soft-spoken, supportive, and caring to everyone she knew.
Her greatest joy was the time she spent raising her children, and later the time spent with her granddaughters. She was so excited to have grandchildren and devoted her love to each of her three granddaughters; playing and reading with them for as long as she was able. She loved them deeply.
In late 2016, Joyce moved to Calgary to be closer to her daughter and family. It was comforting to have her near as her health worsened. While she struggled with memory loss in her later years, she never forgot the names or faces of those dearest to her.
A Memorial Service will be held for Joyce on Saturday July 13th at 2pm, at Knox United Church in Calgary. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local Humane Society to honour Joyce’s love of animals. Messages of condolence may be forwarded to the family at http://www.piersons.ca.

HUDAK, Nancy Lynnann

Nancy Hudak, beloved wife of George Kesteven and mother to Paige Hudak-Kesteven passed away peacefully on Monday, June 10th after a courageous third battle with cancer at the age of 52.
Nancy was born August 19, 1966 in Medicine Hat, Alberta to John and Evelyn Hudak. The youngest of four siblings, she moved with her family to Calgary in 1979. Upon graduation from St. Francis High School in 1984 she worked for two prominent Calgary law firms where she acquired valuable contract administration skills. In 1988 she commenced studies at the University of Calgary completing her B. Comm. in 1992 and following graduation began work with University Technologies Inc. (UTI) Nancy became an expert in the fields of intellectual property, patents and licensing; skills which provided a significant contribution to all of her employers.
In her late twenties she successfully fought life threatening cancer not once but twice, emerging with a tremendous appreciation for life and as a champion for cancer research and end of life treatment. She was insistent upon attention to detail and complete documentation and these skills served her well professionally, and as she faced her health-related challenges.
In 1997 she began work with TransCanada Turbines where she met George. Thus began a professional relationship that evolved into a wonderful romance that would last for over 20 years. In 2000 she accepted a role with Hyprotech and subsequently Genome Canada, where she remained until Paige’s joyous arrival in 2004. Nancy was a dedicated and loving spouse and mother. Her smile, infectious laughter and ability to put others at ease will be sorely missed.
Nancy was predeceased by her father John in 2006. Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her mother Evelyn, and her siblings and their spouses: Michelle and John Scott of Niagara-on-the-Lake; Bonnie and Phil Stevenson, and Mark Hudak all of Calgary. Nancy was a loving aunt to Nicole (Craig) Campbell, Jared (Courtney) Solinger, Christopher (Patsy) Scott, Lucia and Blake Stevenson, and Abagael and Isabella Hudak. She will also be missed by George’s daughters Christina Kesteven and Cathie (Scott) Bennett of Calgary, as well as George’s parents Don and Phoebe Kesteven and his siblings Leonard (Sandra), Cameron (Lori) and Darlene Kesteven (Rick McKee) and Paige’s cousins Blair, Jared, Torey, Evangeline, Derek and Bridget.
A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be held at the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive in Victoria on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 10:00 AM.

1933-2019
Anne passed away on Feb 22, 2019, and she will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. She was active in her church Holy Family Parish, love to play and win at cards at the Venier Center, stubborn and opinioned, but would always lend a helping hand to a friend and strangers alike.

Anne was the most friendliest, sweetest, kindest and humblest woman I ever met. I have many good memories of my friend of 14 years. Some people go in and out of your lives, without touching them. But not Anne. At the age of 62, she walked into my life and climbed a ladder to help me (a complete stranger) paint my house. A friendship was born and would continue on for many years, even after I was no longer her neighbor. Thank you Anne for being there for me all these years, and I and your friends will miss you.

In order to honor the memory of Anne, I would like to plant a tree at:

Medicine Hat Memorial Arboretum

EVELYN REIMER

A short time ago, family and friends gathered at Holy Family to celebrate the life of a remarkable lady. Evelyn’s kind mannerisms will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Think of her as living,
In the hearts of those she touched…
For nothing loved is ever lost –
And she was loved so much!

Her Life Lived…
Her Life Cherished…
Her Life Honoured.

JAMES M. PRITCHARD

June 21 2019
It is with the warmth of the blessings received from his life that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, James M. Pritchard. James was predeceased by his wife Elaine, parents Milton and Margareta, brothers Fred, Murray and Blake. James is remembered with appreciation and love by his daughter, Katherine (Les Lindeman) of Calgary, sons Malcolm (Janis) of Medicine Hat, Scott (Nanda Weicker) of Calgary and Alan (Deborah) of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jennifer of Edmonton, Matthew of Calgary, Hilary of Medicine Hat, Kelsey Lindeman of Masset B.C., Everett of Silverthorne, Colorado, James Lindeman of Detroit Michigan, Blake of Calgary, Abigail of Shrewsbury, England and Adrienne of Edmonton, as well as 5 great grandchildren. James was born in North Bay, Ontario before moving with his family to Lethbridge at the age of 4. James lived in Lethbridge until high school before moving to Edmonton following the early death of his father. James thrived at high school in Edmonton and then enrolled in the University of Alberta where he met and married Elaine Forbes his loving wife of 54 years whom predeceased him in 2004. James graduated from Law School at the University of Alberta after which he took the position of Crown Prosecutor with the Attorney General’s office in Calgary. Later James and Elaine moved to Medicine Hat where he became a partner in the Stone Pritchard law firm. James enjoyed the practice of law with his partners who included Malcolm and Janis and was thrilled to be able to see Hilary join the firm now known as Pritchard & Co. LLP. His integrity in the profession and life was unassailable and is reflected in his influence as a role model with three of his children and three of his grandchildren becoming lawyers. Always active in the community, he was involved in the Rotary Club, served as President of the Board of Governors for the Medicine Hat College, President of the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce, and was elected a Bencher with the Law Society of Alberta for multiple terms. While a bencher he chaired numerous standing committees, was a member of the executive committee and was an advocate for the role of rural lawyers in the Alberta bar. He contributed much to his community and legal profession in a quiet, dignified and unassuming manner, being always the considerate gentleman. James was always interested in farming and ranching. His interest was sparked as a teenager when he worked at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (Agriculture Canada). The spark, fanned by his enjoyment of his dealings with his many agricultural clients, resulted in a farming and ranching operation in which he remained actively involved until his health declined. At the request of James, a family graveside memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, we ask anyone wishing to honour his memory make a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, two Foundations he supported during his life, or the Canadian Alzheimer’s Society whose work is now very much in our hearts.

I didn't know what to do
When I saw your best steps
stolen away from you
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your foot steps in the sand
trying to walk like a man.

AUSTIN CURTIN

Austin Edward Curtin was born in Sunderland, Ontario on June 20, 1941 and passed away in Medicine Hat, Alberta on Saturday June 15, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Marilyn Curtin and his three daughters Cheryl Dodge (David) of Ajax, Ontario, Kimberley Knight (Steven Pudwell) of Medicine Hat and Suzanne Curtin (Shane Chisholm) of Calgary; two grandchildren, Matthew and Nicole Dodge of Ajax Ontario; and his siblings Gerard (André) Curtin, Clara Brasier and Yvonne (Cal) Holland. Austin also leaves behind several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Madeline and Clare and his siblings Rosalie and Brian.
Austin started his retail career with Zellers in 1959 and then in 1975 made the monumental decision to move to Canadian Tire. After a store in Aylmer, Ontario and one in Marystown, Newfoundland, in 1980, he and Marilyn decided to embark on the exciting opportunity to open what was to become an extremely successful store in Medicine Hat, Alberta. After 37 years of remarkable service to Canadian Tire, his community, his staff and his customers, Austin retired in 2013. He served on the Canadian Tire Corporation’s Board of Directors for 10 years and the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors for four years. In 2014, Austin was named Medicine Hat College’s Business Person of the Year, and received an honorary degree in 2016. Austin was proud to be a Canadian Tire Dealer and had a deep respect for his community. He was giving and supportive of those around him. His wisdom, dry humour, and love of life will be missed.
His family would like to give their thanks to Caring Hearts for their unwavering and exceptional care for Austin over the past few years, and while he only spent a short time there, the family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Sarah and the staff at Riverview.
An informal opportunity to share memories with Austin’s family will take place at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1st. Austin had two main pet peeves: Getting up early and going to bed early. In keeping with that, Austin’s funeral will take place at 1:00 p.m. on July 2, 2019 at Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road S.E.). In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation may do so to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program at jumpstart.canadiantire.ca or to the Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta, Rm # 104, 430 6 Ave SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 2S8 (cfsea.ca).

JAMES M.

I didn't know what to do
When I saw your best steps stolen away from you
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your foot steps in the sand trying to walk like a man.
