CHARLES W. J. STEINER

1934 – 2018
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Charles Wilfred John Steiner announce his peaceful passing on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the age of 84 years. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Yvonne and three children, Mike (Vicki) Steiner, Susan (Larry) Granger and Jeff (Lindy) Steiner; grandchildren, Sarah (Tom) Pollard, Mark (Lindsay) Steiner, Leah Steiner, Thomas (Brittany) Granger, Mara Steiner and Emma Steiner; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Ernie (Erica) Steiner, Marie Malkoske, Donny (Karen) Steiner and Katherine (Orville) Hood; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Charlie was a kind, generous and loving man whose family and faith meant the world to him. He was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba in 1934 and grew up on the Steiner family farm. In 1956, he married the love of his life, Yvonne, and together they raised three children. Early in his career, he worked in corporate management with Shell Canada in various locations before moving to Medicine Hat to become the owner of the Shell bulk dealership in 1972. Here he put down permanent roots, growing his business, forging bonds with customers and serving with the Medicine Hat Rotary Club. Leisure hours were dedicated to family, friends, faith and fishing, with many happy hours spent along the South Saskatchewan River. The lakes of northern Saskatchewan were another favourite fishing destination. Always putting family first, he helped both his sons start their own businesses. In his later years he worked with Jeff, arriving at 7:00 a.m. sharp six days a week. Friday afternoon “board meetings” were a highlight. He considered himself lucky that his children and most of his grandchildren chose to settle here. The funeral be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at UNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH (8 Palliser Place NE) with a luncheon to follow. If friends so desire, donations in Charlie’s memory can be made to Unity Lutheran Church. Condolences may be sent through http://www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Charles Steiner. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to

1939 – 2018

Ferruccio (Frank) Giurissevich
passed away peacefully on June 28, 2018 after a long battle with cancer in Penticton B.C

AVANTHIA EVANGELOS SWAN

Avanthia died at home on July 9th, departing the world peacefully, painlessly, and gracefully as she had traversed it. Born Aug. 13, 1937 in Medicine Hat AB, the first child of John Evangelos and Carrie Reeder, she was ever her fathers girl. Very bright and equally attractive, she made an early impression on the stage, winning the provincial Dominion Drama Festival Best Actress award followed by scholarship study at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Her young marriage produced 3 children, each of whose lives reflect her pursuit of love, beauty, and accomplishment. They were ever a source of pride for her.

When all the children were reasonably rooted in life, she returned to school and took an honours degree in History and Literature at York University, followed by a teaching degree. Rather than teaching she joined the ranks of Torontos free-lance book editors, where she enjoyed many years creating clarity in textbooks, while sneaking in some writing of her own.

Retirement made possible the adventure of living in varied places. Based in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island where she had three different homes a great little acreage on Quamichan Lake, followed by a strange hill house on Anzio Rd, and lastly a modest bungalow near Maple Bay. But she also purchased and set up homes in the SE of England (Horsham), in Capetown SA (in Newlands and Sea Point) and in San Diego (La Jolla), while fitting in 2 years in a rental apartment on Bute St. in Vancouvers West End. Each of these homes reflected her magic taste in every aspect of décor and was crowned by her own distinctive art work.

Many will miss her, but none so much as her 3 children (GTA and Victoria) and her 2 brothers (Edmonton and Medicine Hat) and their families.

Her husband Joe looks back fondly and wistfully on over 60 years of happiness, adventure, and love.

BEATON

A Celebration of Life for Hugh Campbell Beaton will be held at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, July 15th at the Hillside Cemetery with Rev David Carter presiding. Reception to follow at Medicine Hat College to share memories.

ESTHER RIEGER

A private gathering was held at Hillside Cemetery a short time ago to say good-bye to this honourable lady. A life well lived now granted eternal rest.

A life well lived is a legacy
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A loving, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure.

Her Life Lived…
Her Life Cherished…
Her Life Honoured.

HEILMAN

Freda Heilman (Schreiber) passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the age of 93 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Sharon (Walter) Regehr and BeverleyAnn (David) Jeggo; her five grandchildren: Trevor (Tina) Regehr, Todd (Jill) Regehr all of Medicine Hat; David Jeggo, Jr. of Brockville, Ontario, Chris (Veronique) Jeggo of Ottawa and Melanie (Craig) Weigel of Toronto. Also mourning her passing are her great grandchildren: Nicholas Regehr, Avery and Owen Regehr, Zachary, Maya and Noah Jeggo and Freda’s sister Evelyn (Carlo) Paccagnan as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her in-laws: Marie (Ewald) Schreiber, Lillian (Don) Schreiber, Margaret (Peter) Derringer, Balzer (Dorothy) Heilman of Medicine Hat, and Lorraine Bowes of Calgary as well as Albert’s nieces and nephews. Freda was predeceased by her first husband, Jack Heilman, her partner Albert Pomreinke, her parents, Frederich and Katherina Schreiber, three brothers, Ewald (Marie), Otto (Dorothy) and Don (Lillian) Schreiber; three sisters Hilda (Bill) Kanewischer, Marie (Fred) Schuetzle , and Laura (Gordon) Schneider; her sisters-in-law Emily Herman, Betty Andreas, Lydia Rathwell, and Mary Sailer; as well as her four brothers-in-law Andrew, Anthony, Stephen and Nels Heilman (and their spouses). Freda was born on February 25, 1925 in Bessarabia, Romania. The family immigrated to Canada via Pier 21 in 1930 and then made their way to a farm in the Hilda/Schuler area. Frederich was a successful farmer in Bessarabia, but sadly had to start over once he came to Canada, like so many other immigrants. Freda, Hilda, Laura and Lydia (Jack’s sister) started working at the hospital in the kitchen when they were 16 years old. They all lived in the nurses’ quarters and on their days off, all but Hilda, would go dancing. It was at these dances that Freda met her future husband, Jack. Jack was an orderly and after a brief courtship, they began their life together. Freda was not afraid of hard work. When her daughters were young, she worked in the fields on the Sakamoto Farm, at the National Fruit Company, and at the National Bakery decorating the most amazing doll cakes. Soon thereafter, she went back to work at the hospital in the laundry department and later in the sewing department. In total, she had worked 35 years at the hospital before retiring at the age of 60. A shy lady, Freda would prefer to be in the background cooking, sewing, and looking after her garden. She left the socializing up to Jack. She was very fond of children and our family would often look after a variety of children throughout the years. She was an extremely creative person. She could take an empty apple crate and make it into the loveliest piece of furniture. Each year during the months leading up to the Medicine Hat Stampede, Freda would make Stampede costumes for her daughters to be worn in the Kiddies Parade. They were beautiful with lots of embroidery and most often the girls would win 1st and 2nd place. Freda was 48 when Jack passed away and after a few years of being alone, she joined the Minus One Club. It was here that she met Albert Pomreinke and they spent many years together going to the Club, camping and fishing. Freda was kind and loving. She was the very first resident of Meadow Ridge/Park Plaza and enjoyed the staff and the residents. She was very happy in the Memory Care unit, where she could be observed spending many hours with crayon in hand doing her colouring. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 12 noon to 12:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Victory Lutheran Church (2793 Southview Drive SE) on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Diaconal Minister Lila deWaal. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. He continued his education at City Park Collegiate and the University of Saskatchewan, both in Saskatoon. John married Sheila Margaret Duff in 1948, at the Fifth Avenue Memorial Church in Medicine Hat, Alberta. During their life on the farm, they raised three children which resulted in an extended family of: Lloyd (Elaine) and their son, Kevin and his children, Micah, Levi, and Jirah; Ian and his daughter, Lindsay Ferguson (Al Foley); Gwen (Brian) Ramsdale and families, Dane Kosolofski, Kyle (Lisa) and daughter, Zoey Kosolofski, Tory (Brock) Beach and daughter, Sawyer, Nicole (Gavin) Brinsmead and sons, Declan and Keenan, Kallie (Jaydee) Freimark and daughters, Isabelle and Emma. After the completion of a grid road to the Estuary Ferry, John and Sheila built a home near the ranch site where John was raised. They moved into their new home in April of 1975. Their house on the hill gave them a view of the river valley, their Hereford cattle and the peace and tranquility of country life. For many years, John was a councillor for the RM of Chesterfield and held the Chairman position of Chesterfield Water Users Association for over 30 years. John was also part owner in the Empress Auction Mart with about eight to ten other fellows. 1913 ~ ETHEL CURRIE ~ 2018

Ethel Currie of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Austin Currie, passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the amazing age of 105 years. Ethel leaves to cherish her memory numerous friends, colleagues and relatives in Canada, United States and France. Ethel was born in Medicine Hat on June 26, 1913, an only child to Mack and Mattie (Franks) Higdon, both from North Carolina. Her father leased and was the resident manager of the Medicine Hat Ranch (MHR) south of Whitla from 1913 to 1919, then he purchased the -N- Ranch south of Manyberries where Ethel was raised. Mack Higdon continued to lease the MHR from 1919 to 1925 and chose George Murray II, to be the resident manager. During this time, Mattie’s sister, Jessie Franks, came for a visit, met, and later married George Murray II. George and Jessie Murray had four children who were Ethel’s cousins: GW (George William) Murray, Lois Franks (Murray) Jacobson, Mack Higdon Murray (all deceased) and Maxine Rich (Murray) Hutchison (surviving). George Murray II purchased the MHR and his descendants continue to farm and ranch. Ethel adored her cousins and held them in high esteem.
Ethel attended school in Manyberries and Medicine Hat. After graduating from High School, she completed a business course and became the secretary-treasurer for the family ranching company. Ethel was ahead of her time. At the age of 23, after reading a newspaper ad, she decided to pursue flying lessons in Lethbridge. She obtained her pilot’s licence and her instructor became her future husband. Ethel married Austin Currie in 1940. They moved to Winnipeg, where Ethel gained her commercial pilot’s licence, then moved to Montreal. Together, they flew freight between Winnipeg and Montreal and mail to communities in Northern Quebec. They lived in various locations throughout Eastern Canada before settling in Medicine Hat in the early 1950’s. They operated Western Lockers and retired in the late 1950’s. Ethel was very involved in the Medicine Hat community. She received the “Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal” for over sixty years of volunteer work for the Canadian Red Cross. Ethel’s contributions included sewing and knitting for the soldiers during WWII, volunteering at blood donor clinics, establishing the Medicine Hat Red Cross office, being the Treasurer of the Red Cross Advisory Commitee (2013) and still doing the bookkeeping until the age of 100. Ethel was instrumental in starting the United Way in Medicine Hat as a response to the crisis caused by the 1953 floods. As a member of the Kiwanas and Quota Club her efforts helped raise funds for community projects. Well before City council meetings were broadcast, Ethel would film the proceedings and drive across town to deliver it to Cable 10 TV, where she volunteered as a camera operator, well into her 80’s. She enjoyed her time and the lasting friendships formed as a member of the Historical Society, Order of the Eastern Star and the Liberal Party. E thel practiced her Christian Science faith until her death. Ethel felt service to others was important and if she saw a need, she wanted to fix it. Ethel was an incredibly strong, independent woman. She never once complained as her eyesight, hearing and mobility declined. She kept her wit and sharp intellect until her last day. Ethel generously donated her time, energy and resources to the community of Medicine Hat and will not be forgotten. The funeral service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE, on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. David J. Carter officiating. Mr. Lindon “Kay” Bone, beloved husband of Mrs. June Bone, of Medicine Hat, passed away surrounded by his loving children on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the age of 83 years. Kay was born in Lethbridge, on August 7, 1934 to parents, Lindon and Annie Bone. He was raised on the family farm learning a strong work ethic, his love of horses, and the ability to fix or repair anything. In 1953, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he was a mechanic working on Lancaster bombers, Mustang fighters, and Dakota C-47 bombers. While posted in McDonald, Manitoba he met the love of his life, June Phillips. Dating only three months they were married on October 1, 1955 and were together 60 years. After leaving RCAF, Kay, June and family: Gordon 7 and Wendy 5 returned to Alberta in 1964 where the youngest daughter, Karen, arrived to complete the family. Kay worked retail for three years, then in 1967 he took a position with Bow River Pipelines, a job he enjoyed for 31 years, retiring in 1998. After retiring Kay continued his passion for fixing anything. He started a sewing machine repair business. Even when he was no longer able to work with his hands he took great joy to verbally guide ladies to oil and repair their own machines. Kay’s life was guided by his strong faith. He was good with people, had a big heart, took joy in helping others to build, wire, or repair almost anything. Dad was a practical joker and loved to tease and scare people just to see them jump! BURNS

On Friday, July 20, 2018, Allan “Al” Claire Burns, surrounded by his children, passed away at the age of 87 years. He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy Burns; his children, Bonnie (Gerry Stillwell) Burns, Terri (Gerry) Ehlert, Robert (Grace) Burns and Barbara (Suheel Bashir) Burns; his grandchildren, Shauna, Erin, Ria, Taylor and Blake; six great grandchildren, Brooke, Cale, Katherine, Siri, Roan, and Kian; and his brother-in-law, Warren Sibbet. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Doris "June" Burns (nee Allen), on September 2, 2014; his parents, Charles and Anne Burns (nee Pearce); his brothers, Ron and Barry, and his sister Gayle. Al was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and spent his early years on the family farm north of Regina. After his family lost the farm during the Great Depression, they moved to Regina, Saskatchewan and then to Medicine Hat for high school, where he was the captain and quarterback of the football team. It was in Medicine Hat that a young, newly brush cut Al met his future wife, June, on a blind date. Despite their shyness at first, they danced the night away and were married on February 5, 1951. While living in Medicine Hat and Hanna, Alberta, Al worked as a field engineer for PFRA. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1957 for his work with Ducks Unlimited, where Al would work for nearly 30 years. They returned to Alberta in 1976, when Al became the provincial manager for Ducks Unlimited. They lived in the Edmonton area for many years, before moving to Kelowna and, finally back to Medicine Hat in 2012. Al was a natural storyteller who loved to share his rich life with friends and family, telling them about growing up in the Great Depression in Saskatchewan, the struggles of his childhood, his work in Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and his adventures living on the Canadian Prairies – his stories ranged from going out to work as a young boy, to remortgaging his house to build a community centre and hockey rink in Fort Garry, Winnipeg, to his experiences coaching his children in sports. He will be remembered for his strong moral code and work ethic, his unwavering loyalty to friends and family, his love of hockey, and his work within his community, church and the Masons. A celebration of Al’s life will be held in Medicine Hat at the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Spending time with family and friends was very important to Tom. He got great pleasure from sharing his love for the outdoors—hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, working or travel. Alice also leaves to cherish her memory her children, Joyce (Dave) McNaughton, Dale (Karen) Haas; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Haas and their families. Her 7 grandchildren and their spouses and the 9 great grandchildren children all adored their Grandma for her gentle ways, warm love, generosity and caring, as each one was so special to her. Her numerous nieces and nephews as well as the Haas In-laws all appreciated this wonderful lady.
She was predeceased by: her son, Wade Haas; her parents, William and Mary Bischke; her sister and brother-in-law, Leah and Herb Ginther; her brother and sister-in-law, Reuben and Agnes Bischke; and sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Don Kanewischer. She was also predeceased by her parents in law, Adam and Tillie Haas.
Alice was born on May 26, 1930 in Medicine Hat and grew-up on the farm near Elkwater. As a young adult she moved to Medicine Hat where she met Ephraim Haas and they were married December 30, 1950. They lived in Hilda until they moved to Medicine Hat in 1960 where Ephraim and Alice were involved in the automotive industry.
Alice was interested in people, was hospitable and gracious, with her home always available for any celebration, she was a fabulous cook and baker. There was always room for one more at the table. Alice had lovely taste not only for food but also for decorating and clothes. She was a meticulous housekeeper and enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She was always learning and reading and found the computer a great hobby and hours of enjoyment as she prepared her own greeting cards and photo cards to share with others.
She and Ephraim loved to travel over the years often with family or friends and they have many pictures and artifacts to show for their trips
She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and had a big heart for couples serving as Missionaries and Pastors. We are comforted by knowing she is now in Heaven and is reunited with those who have gone before. She suffered with the effects of Alzheimer’s the last 5 years but her sweet spirit often shone through with her winning smile and sparkling eyes. She is free of pain and sorrow and now dwells where the roses never fade.
We are so grateful for the loving care she received in the 3 care facilities she experienced during this journey.

LOYAL to his family, his friends and his hometown. SPORTS FANATIC any sport, any time, who watches 188 regular season baseball games, seriously?? STRONG WILLED…A.K.A. Stubborn as you know what. FIEBER

Helen Lorraine Fieber was raised by her parents, Martha and Henry Wolff along with her brother, George and sister Yvonne. She spent her childhood years in Irvine and, after deciding that life on the farm was not her calling, went to Normal School to become a teacher. Lorraine’s first teaching position was in Irvine and she later went on to teach at Elm Street and Crestwood schools, finishing her career at Montreal Street School. Music was her passion and her students learned that music was fun! Lorraine loved shoes and she particularly enjoyed wearing her fancy shoes to go dancing at the Moose on Saturday nights with her late husband Lester.
Lorraine single-handedly raised three great kids: Neil, Paula, and Lee. Although times were sometimes tough she managed to provide a safe, happy and adventurous home with good food, music and cats. She always maintained that raising kids that played freely on the "bald headed prairie" made them hardy.
Family, friends, and her cats brought joy to her life. She was delighted with her grandchildren, Andrew, Kandis and Tamara, playing Skippo, reading and baking for them. She always made an effort to get together with those she loved. Pizza night with the girls was something she looked forward to and wouldn't miss, nor would she miss her commitment and service to the Order of the Royal Purple. She contributed much to her position and was always available to play the piano and help and guide new and existing members.
Lorraine was an adventurous cook, always trying something new and interesting to fit the occasion. As music was important to her, she would often be found singing as she cooked or tidied up. In fact, on Canada's 150 birthday she surprised her family by singing all the verses of O'Canada. Who knew there was more than one? Lorraine did!
Medicine Hat was her home except for a 3-year residence in Penticton where she and Lester started a bed and breakfast, Panorama Place. They returned to the Hat because she missed the prairie, open skies and sunsets, not to mention her friends.
Lorraine and Les had a timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and always looked forward to their annual get away. She was always interested in the culture, food, customs, shoes and music of any country she travelled to.
Lorraine moved to Langley in 2011 to be closer to the support of her daughters but didn't particularly like the area citing “too many trees”. She often asked if she could go home to her beloved praries. Lorraine was a prairie girl and in our hearts, she will always be.
She died at peacefully at Jackman Manor, Aldergrove, B.C.,on March 20, 2018.
You are welcome to celebrate her life on Saturday, August 11 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Medicine Hat Golf Club. Refreshments and sandwiches will be provided. Wear your best shoes if you are so inclined. She would have liked that.

MARY KATHLEEN “KATHIE” McKINLEY

April 11, 1949 ~ July 27, 2018

With deep sadness Warren McKinley announces that his dear wife Kathie, of 48 years, passed away peacefully in his presence on the morning of July 27, 2018 at the St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice in Riverside. Kathie also leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lisa McKinley Surber of Newell, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Corbin of Bozeman, Montana and Cameron of Belgrade; one brother, Tim (Kathy) Sharp of Edmonton; five sisters, Mary (Ray) May of Edmonton, Ann Sharp of Calgary, Brenda (Robert) Deleau of Parksville, BC, Cecelia "Cathy" Sharp of Calgary and Janine Coté of Parksville, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathie was predeceased by her parents, James "Jim" and Eileen Sharp; two brothers-in-law, Dick McKinley and Larry Coté; and her father and mother-in-law, Guy & Muriel McKinley. Kathie was brought into retail by her father, Jim Sharp, the proprietor of Hutchings and Sharp Western Store, at a very young age. Hutchings and Sharp had deep roots with the ranching community in Western Canada and served as an anchor of the downtown community of Medicine Hat. After school, she would join her father in the store to work and, early on, enjoyed spending time with Jim’s partner, Harry Hutchings, from whom she learned a great deal. As her business knowledge and interest blossomed, she assumed increasing responsibilities with the store and took over all aspects of management well before her father’s passing. Kathie was particularly fond of choosing styles for the upcoming season on buying trips, creating unique and innovative forms of advertising, and dressing the store front windows. She had an eye for fashion and was well known for helping people look their best for any occasion. Kathie mentored and developed fond friendships with many employees over the years. She was a committed supporter of the downtown business community serving many years on the Downtown Business Revitalization Zone where she was instrumental in bringing the Heritage Canada Main Street Program to Medicine Hat. All who knew Kathie recognized that she took great pride in owning and operating Hutchings and Sharp.
After a brief time attending college business classes, Kathie married Warren McKinley in 1970 and stepped into the role of a ranch wife and all it entailed, supporting Warren and his father, Guy with McKinley Hereford Farms. Kathie shared her life lovingly with Warren for over 48 years. Much like the other aspects of her life, Kathie embraced ranch life with zest and developed a passion for it. Her duties were never ending; from helping to save calves in the spring, to moving and trailing cattle, and preparing ranch meals. She did all this while working and managing the store and raising their daughter, Lisa. Annual branding meals were anticipated and revered by many. Kathie was never satisfied unless the meal was perfect; loving to put on a spread, achieving a perfectly cooked roast beef while finding the right tablecloth and the perfect prairie flowers to match. One of her passions was cooking and no one left hungry from her dinner table and if they did it was their own damn fault. Manx cats and border collies were beneficiaries of her caring and kind hearted nature. Over the years, as Lisa became more active in 4-H, riding and horses, Kathie and Warren took great pride in seeing Lisa achieve horseback successes. She was extremely supportive and encouraging of Lisa’s endeavors and was particularly proud of Lisa’s academic achievements and career path in the Agricultural industry. An additional role that Kathie took pride in playing was Grandma to her grandsons, Corbin and Cameron. She deeply loved her grandsons and nothing gave her more pleasure than seeing those boys doing ranch activities or riding with Warren. She was notorious for spoiling them on birthdays and Christmas. A Celebration of Kathie's Life will be held at the MEDICINE HAT EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE GROUNDS, GRANDSTAND BANQUET ROOM, 2055 – 21st Avenue SE, on Friday, August 10th, 2018 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. As an expression of sympathy those wishing to remember Kathie may do so with a gift to the Carmel Hospice (St. Joseph’s Home), 156 – 3rd Street NE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1 or to the Medicine Hat Community Foundation, 104, 430 – 6th Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2S8. KEELER

It is with deep, deep sadness and broken hearts that we share that on August 1, 2018 God took the hand of our precious, precious mom, grandma, and great grandma, EILEEN MILDRED KEELER and she went to be with her loved ones in heaven. It is an extreme privilege and honour to know that we were chosen to be part of the life of such a special person. It is also with extreme gratefulness, and the only way that we can possibly be without her for a while, is knowing that she will now be at rest in God’s hands and has been happily greeted and reunited with her family, pets, and friends she so loved. In June and July, Grandma made an amazing recovery from pneumonia in the Lethbridge Hospital but was tired, and after struggling at home for a little more than a week, peacefully took God’s hand and was reunited with her best friend and little love, Trixie dog; her dear son Fred Keeler; husband Roy Chandler Keeler; her parents Fredrick and Margaret Sage, brothers Harvey (Jean) Sage and Norman Sage, and sister Birdene (Johnny) McConkney; parents-in-law William and Helen Keeler and their sons Alfred Keeler, David (Mary) Keeler, Art Keeler, Ernie Keeler, and Eric and Gordon Keeler who went to heaven as babies; and her dear Lord to whom she prayed nightly, who had prepared a beautiful, well-deserved mansion for our dear mom, grandma, and great grandma.
Grandma was born and grew up in Cabri, Saskatchewan with loving parents, two brothers and a sister. Upon graduation, she moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where she completed her training to be a nurse and worked in the Medicine Hat Hospital. She married Roy Chandler Keeler and they raised their children on the Keeler farm north of Bow Island until moving to Bow Island when their children were young. Her husband Roy passed away in 1965 after a brief battle with cancer. Grandma then worked at the Pleasant View Lodge in Bow Island, where she worked for 25 years. In the year 2000, Grandma moved to Lethbridge where she resided with daughter Margaret.
Grandma most of all loved her family and the animals she had over the years. Grandma loved knitting for her family; her plants; watching families in the park behind her home; doing word search, reading Danielle Steele; and visiting family. Grandma loved to camp and travel, travelling mostly with family through Europe, across Canada and the US, including many visits to Disneyland in California, and Disney World, cruising to Alaska and the Caribbean; and to Hawaii, including cruising the islands. Other than family times, perhaps one of the greatest highlights of grandma’s life was doing the Queen Walk with the Queen in Calgary in 1989, when one of her granddaughters won an essay contest to meet the Queen. During the last 15 years, Grandma travelled to Victoria many times to visit family, and in the last seven years, enjoyed spending time at the condo she shared with daughter Margaret in Sidney B.C. During the past two years, Grandma spent a great deal of time in Calgary helping babysit her newest grandchild, as well as travelling to visit family and friends in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in either her new Red Equinox, or her little RV.
Left to remember and cherish memories of Grandma are her immediate and extended children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren:
Norman Keeler (Darlene) daughters Nicole (Jeff Paulson) and Melanie; Gordon Keeler (Darla), son Chris (Tanya) children Heather and Zenon, son Joel (Lisa) children Raine and Daxon, daughter Tania (Jeff) Anderson and new baby on the way, and Darla’s daughter Bailee; Margaret Jenkins, daughter Brandi and son Callum and his father Jeff Hunter, daughter Lynsi (Scott Peake) daughter Sawyer and new baby girl on the way; Clifford (Wendy) Keeler, son Derek (Jodi) children Raya and Jaden; daughter Marci (Jared) Sweet, children Barrett and Charlee; daughter in-law Valerie Keeler, son Jeff and son Alex and his mother Megan Keeler; son Dean (Nicole) children Sidney and Layne; Diann Lorinczy (Brent Reid); son Rylee Lorinczy (Amanda) children Jace and Kai; son Chance Lorinczy (Jen) adopted daughter Destiny; son Tyrel Lorinczy (Jayde) daughter Marisa; Steven Reid (Heidi) daughters Sienna and Kennedy; and Brenden Reid.
Grandma also leaves others special to her: sister in-laws Jean Keeler and Daphne Keeler; niece Maxine (Lief) Jepson; Barb Maciever and Tom; June and Max at the condo; her Home Care workers; and many other family and friends who were privileged to have known Grandma over the years. Although Grandma never thought so, Grandma was indeed a very unique and special person. She was a very selfless person who held a lot of love in her heart for each and every member of her family, her animals and friends, and asked for so very little.

Always in our hearts Grandma,
Until we are together again.
We will always love you.

A Funeral Service will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. with Canon James Robinson officiating. Eileen will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Roy in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat. In memory of Grandma, grandma would be pleased donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Foundation, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5.

MAURICE JOHN (JACK) KNOWLES

August 1, 1941 – August 3, 2018

Our man Jack, the light of our lives and a bright light in Medicine Hat, hung up his tool belt on Friday, August 3, 2018. Jack passed away peacefully at home in the company of his family, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Cherishing his memory are his adoring family: Dawn, his wife of 53 years; his two children, Katharine Knowles (Chris Mazurenko) of Vancouver and Tanis Knowles Yarnell (Patrick Yarnell) of Winnipeg; his two grandchildren, Olivia and Eric Yarnell; his sister Maureen (John) Dowler, brother Len Knowles, brother-in-law Bill (Monique) Pringle, uncle Len (Laurie) Sharland of Medicine Hat; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, all who miss him dearly. Jack was born in Medicine Hat on August 1, 1941 and was very proud of this city. In his personal life, Jack was known as many different things to many people. He was a Queen Scout, pigeon fancier, keeper of 101 dalmatians, king of the disco, photography hobbyist, Medicine Hat history buff, proud Kiwanian and Kinsman, part-time Shriner, possibly a Mason (he kept it a secret), challenger of City Hall, David Suzuki super-fan, professional and personal mentor, promoter of the local Prostate Cancer Support Group, and lover of bagpipes and all things plaid. He had a creative mind and great sense of humour. His practical jokes were legendary. He was a collector of many things, and had over 83 screwdrivers, 55 rolls of electrical tape, 41 staple guns, 27 vintage lightbulbs, and countless friends and neighbours, new and old, all who will miss seeing him around. He followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a Master Electrician, and took over the family business ‘Knowles Electric’ which he was proud to say was in business for over 80 years. Everyone knew where to find Jack—his shop door was always open. He was never too busy for a friend. His belief in people never wavered, often giving people who needed it advice, support, or a job. He believed in second chances. He had a collection of funny photos and signs posted at his shop and one of them said, ‘Never Give Up’ and he never did. He never gave up on people, projects, the hope that he would beat cancer, and that he would have more time. Jack spent his last few weeks in his backyard supervising work being done on many projects he always meant to do, even making a tree swing for his grandchildren. Family and close friends celebrated his 77th birthday with him on August 1st at a beautiful backyard party. He died two days later with paint on his hands and a golden tan from hours spent sitting outside, doing jobs, and listening to the birds in his beloved crabapple trees. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 3:00pm at Westminster United Church, 101 6th Street SE, Medicine Hat. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place immediately following the service at the Carriage House at the Medicine Hat Stampede Grounds, 2055 21st Avenue SE. All are welcome.

Kathie also leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lisa McKinley Surber of Newell, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Corbin of Bozeman, Montana and Cameron of Belgrade; one brother, Tim (Kathy) Sharp of Edmonton; five sisters, Mary (Ray) May of Edmonton, Ann Sharp of Calgary, Brenda (Robert) Deleau of Parksville, BC, Cecelia “Cathy” Sharp of Calgary and Janine Coté of Parksville, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathie was predeceased by her parents, James “Jim” and Eileen Sharp; two brothers-in-law, Dick McKinley and Larry Coté; and her father and mother-in-law, Guy & Muriel McKinley.
A Celebration of Kathie’s Life will be held at the MEDICINE HAT EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE GROUNDS, GRANDSTAND BANQUET ROOM, 2055 – 21st Avenue SE, on Friday, August 10th, 2018 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.
