HELLMAN

The morning of June 17, heaven received another angel when Ron Hellman of Richmound, passed away with his beloved wife Debbie and his family at his side. Ron and his twin sister Rose, were born on August 25, 1946, to Nick and Theresa Hellman, completing the family of eight children. Ron is survived by his wife Debbie (Krassman) of 46 years and sons Troy (April) and their children Patience and Zarrah; son Todd (Meghan) and their children Chase and Reid; his siblings, Robert (Delores), Marlene (Pius both deceased), Eileen (Warren – deceased), Charles (Grace), Lloyd (Diane), Clare (Gerry – deceased), Rose (Glen); sister-in-law Wanda (Peter) Brilz, brother-in-law Tim Krassman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Nick and Theresa Hellman; father and mother-in-law Tony and Helen Krassman and two sons Robin and Toby. Ron lived in Richmound all his life except for the last 18 months when he was a resident of the Long Term Care Home in Maple Creek. Ron was a farmer, even when he became ill, he still needed to talk to Troy every night to see what was going on at the farm and how the crop was growing. Ron also went for a two year mechanic course at SAIT in Calgary; he was a great fixer. His love for his family and his grandchildren, especially his grandchildren was quite visible. After being ill for a number of years with lung issues, he got the life saving phone call on August 25, 2014, for a double lung transplant. It was a blessing that we were able to have him with us for another 3 ½ years which was not easy for Ron, but he still had the twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. Ron’s deep faith helped him through this difficult time. He loved to socialize, curl, play golf and baseball. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Richmound Lions Club until ill health forced him to quit. Of course coffee row was always a big thing in his life, either at the hall, at Donald’s shop or at Midfield with Kim and Carey. Ron loved watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Toronto Blue Jays. He loved all shows nature, and if anyone wanted to know anything about birds etc. they just had to ask Ron and he usually knew the answer. We will miss you so much but your pain is gone. Love you now and forever. “Life is a journey – Enjoy it. Don’t count the days make the days count”. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. MORLEY GRANT MYERS

August 2, 1956 – June 16, 2018

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle and friend Morley Myers on Saturday June 16, 2018. The final steps of his journey were made in his garden on Salt Spring Island, in the arms of his beloved wife Isabelle, surrounded by a few close friends and, in spirit, the love of his family and of all those who knew him. Morley’s transformative journey brought him from struggle and pain to a sense of deep love and peace. Towards the end of his days, he said that he had hoped for a miracle but that on reflection, realized that the miracle had already happened. The miracle of healing for him was an overwhelming sense of unconditional love, a love so profound, that it gave him the courage and grace he needed to leave this world and to journey into eternity in peace.
Left to cherish his memory is Morley’s beloved wife Isabelle Ma, his parents Sgt. Clarence (Skip) and Memory Myers. His sister Lynn Myers (Jay Bertrand), brother Larry (Sally) nephews and niece, Joel, Simon, Hannah and Stephen as well as several cousins and dear friends.
Morley Grant Myers was born on August 2, 1956 in Saskatoon, SK Having a military father Morley with his family moved frequently residing in McGivney N.B., Kamloops B.C., Camp Bouchard, QB until their final posting to Sufflield AB in the summer of 1967 at which time Skip his father took leave of military service.
After Morley graduated from Crescent Heights High School he furthered his education at SAIT University in Calgary where he took 2 years of mechanics. Once he was finished he remained in Calgary and worked in the construction trade for a number of years. Morley made friends wherever he went. His sense of humor and irresistible urge to play practical jokes provided many, many unforgettable stories which he loved to tell repeatedly and we all loved to listen to. He enjoyed restoring old cars like his 1946 Mercury Coupe and his 1953 Pontiac hearse. His eye for detail and creativity was always evident and became more predominant later in his life through his passion for sculpting. Morley returned to Medicine Hat briefly but in that time shared his talent in carpentry with the theatre community and after taking some courses in Social Work at the Medicine Hat College he worked in a group home that housed adults with special needs and taught them basic carpentry skills.
In 1988 Morley and his dog Akela packed up and left ‘the Hat’. He came to Salt Spring, fell in love with the island and never left. The creative environment he found there encouraged his evolution into the accomplished sculptor he became. His love for restoration continued as he brought new life to old boats one in particular named “Pud” and other vehicles for his fellow islanders. He was also a highly skilled carpenter who helped to build many beautiful island homes. An engaging and dynamic dancer, Morley was greatly involved in the island’s social dance community.
Morley excelled in and accomplished so many things in this life and other than his love and loyalty to his family and his friends, he will be remembered best for his endearing and boyish sense of humour, his love of pranks, his generosity and right to the end, his infectious laugh.

“The cure for me was His beauty, the remedy for me was to love”. Rabia

BARRY CHARLTON

Sunday, April 29, 1951 ~ Tuesday, July 3, 2018

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Barry Charlton’s passing at the age of 67 years after losing his valiant battle with multiple sclerosis. Barry passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, with his family by his side.

Barry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen; son, Branden (Elizabeth Nutting); sisters, Roberta McDonald, Catherine Glover (Barry) and Dixie Duff as well as his sister-in-law, Maureen Moss. Barry was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Elsa Charlton, in-laws, Harold “Sparkie” and Edith Sparks and brothers-in-law, Dennis Moss and Brent McDonald.

Born on April 29, 1951 and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Barry was a graduate of Medicine Hat High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Karen Sparks. After high school both Karen and Barry moved to Calgary to attend the University of Calgary, where Barry graduated with his Bachelor of Education. Karen and Barry were married after his university graduation on August 25, 1973, in Medicine Hat and welcomed their son, Branden, into the world on March 26, 1980.

Both Barry and Karen started their careers in Hilda, Alberta where they taught for two years. As Karen’s career with the City of Medicine Hat began, Barry transferred schools and spent the majority of his teaching career at Irvine School, teaching generations of children for nearly 30 years. His last years of teaching were spent in Redcliff at the Margaret Wooding School. In addition to his role as a grade five teacher, Barry also taught art where he could allow his creativity to shine. Starting with gluesticks and safety scissors, Barry ended up teaching art using digital technology while he taught schools remotely in rural communities throughout Alberta.

After retiring from teaching, Barry launched his second career, opening Fresh Flowers and Gifts in 2007. Offering Medicine Hat a fresh new perspective on floral design, Barry’s creativity and customer service built a devoted customer base and Fresh Flowers was recognized as the Best Florist in Medicine Hat in 2013 and 2014. Barry’s favourite part, of course, was working on weddings, knowing that he could make the bride’s day with stunning flowers. It wasn’t until Barry was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2015 that he had to sell his beloved shop.

Barry spent the last years of his life with friends and family travelling to places like New York City, Paris, France and Canmore, Alberta. His most memorable trip was to London, England for the royal wedding (which happened to coincide with his 60th birthday).

Barry led a beautiful life filled with creativity and laughter, always reminding us “earth laughs in flowers.” A graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Monday, July 9, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. where we can all fondly remember Barry as the life of the party. A reception will be held therafter at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, Reception Facility, 901 – 13 Street S.W. Those wishing to attend the interment are asked to meet at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, by 10:45 a.m to join the procession to Hillside Cemetery. Honoured to serve the family is

1928 ~ FRED KREIN ~2018

With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our father, grandfather, brother, and friend; Fred Krein. Fred passed away peacefully at his home, on July 5, 2018 at the age of 89. Fred was born in Neudorf, USSR on September 22, 1928. The following year his family made the long voyage by ship to Halifax. From there, the family travelled by train to Hilda, Alberta to work on a cousin's farm. As Fred was growing up, he attended the Sandy Point school. In 1953 he married the love of his life, Ella Doreen Schiefele. Fred and Ella were married 64 years and raised their children on the family farm. Fred served on the committee for the Sandy Point Park, and he was present to vote on the placement of the Sandy Point Bridge. Fred and Ella enjoyed a long and happy retirement that began with cross-country and cross- continent road trips in their motorhome. They also enjoyed various bus tours of both western and eastern Canada. Sadly, Ella passed away in 2015. Fred has spent the last several summers perfecting his paradise-like backyard and nurturing his prized apple trees. He filled the long winter hours enjoying emails, photos and YouTube videos on his iPad. His coffee 'program' included mornings and afternoons at various coffee shops with his favourite buddies. Fred was loved and is survived by his sister, Ella (Dick) Bradley; his brother, Emil (Ruth) Krein; his daughters, Linda (Dave) Duxbury and Joyce Krein; his son, Greg (Miriam) Krein; 3 granddaughters, Cheryl (Jim), Falone, Jolene (Matt); one grandson, Houston; four great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Krein and Flo Straub. In addition to his wife, Fred was predeceased by his younger brother, Gottlieb and an older brother, John Krein. The family would like to thank Shelly and Tina and all Fred's "girls" from 'Collette Cares ll' for the excellent companionship they provided. By request, a private family service will be held at Hillside Cemetery. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation.
