KEELER

It is with deep, deep sadness and broken hearts that we share that on August 1, 2018 God took the hand of our precious, precious mom, grandma, and great grandma, EILEEN MILDRED KEELER and she went to be with her loved ones in heaven. It is an extreme privilege and honour to know that we were chosen to be part of the life of such a special person. It is also with extreme gratefulness, and the only way that we can possibly be without her for a while, is knowing that she will now be at rest in God’s hands and has been happily greeted and reunited with her family, pets, and friends she so loved. In June and July, Grandma made an amazing recovery from pneumonia in the Lethbridge Hospital but was tired, and after struggling at home for a little more than a week, peacefully took God’s hand and was reunited with her best friend and little love, Trixie dog; her dear son Fred Keeler; husband Roy Chandler Keeler; her parents Fredrick and Margaret Sage, brothers Harvey (Jean) Sage and Norman Sage, and sister Birdene (Johnny) McConkney; parents-in-law William and Helen Keeler and their sons Alfred Keeler, David (Mary) Keeler, Art Keeler, Ernie Keeler, and Eric and Gordon Keeler who went to heaven as babies; and her dear Lord to whom she prayed nightly, who had prepared a beautiful, well-deserved mansion for our dear mom, grandma, and great grandma.
Grandma was born and grew up in Cabri, Saskatchewan with loving parents, two brothers and a sister. Upon graduation, she moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where she completed her training to be a nurse and worked in the Medicine Hat Hospital. She married Roy Chandler Keeler and they raised their children on the Keeler farm north of Bow Island until moving to Bow Island when their children were young. Her husband Roy passed away in 1965 after a brief battle with cancer. Grandma then worked at the Pleasant View Lodge in Bow Island, where she worked for 25 years. In the year 2000, Grandma moved to Lethbridge where she resided with daughter Margaret.
Grandma most of all loved her family and the animals she had over the years. Grandma loved knitting for her family; her plants; watching families in the park behind her home; doing word search, reading Danielle Steele; and visiting family. Grandma loved to camp and travel, travelling mostly with family through Europe, across Canada and the US, including many visits to Disneyland in California, and Disney World, cruising to Alaska and the Caribbean; and to Hawaii, including cruising the islands. Other than family times, perhaps one of the greatest highlights of grandma’s life was doing the Queen Walk with the Queen in Calgary in 1989, when one of her granddaughters won an essay contest to meet the Queen. During the last 15 years, Grandma travelled to Victoria many times to visit family, and in the last seven years, enjoyed spending time at the condo she shared with daughter Margaret in Sidney B.C. During the past two years, Grandma spent a great deal of time in Calgary helping babysit her newest grandchild, as well as travelling to visit family and friends in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in either her new Red Equinox, or her little RV.
Left to remember and cherish memories of Grandma are her immediate and extended children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren:
Norman Keeler (Darlene) daughters Nicole (Jeff Paulson) and Melanie; Gordon Keeler (Darla), son Chris (Tanya) children Heather and Zenon, son Joel (Lisa) children Raine and Daxon, daughter Tania (Jeff) Anderson and new baby on the way, and Darla’s daughter Bailee; Margaret Jenkins, daughter Brandi and son Callum and his father Jeff Hunter, daughter Lynsi (Scott Peake) daughter Sawyer and new baby girl on the way; Clifford (Wendy) Keeler, son Derek (Jodi) children Raya and Jaden; daughter Marci (Jared) Sweet, children Barrett and Charlee; daughter in-law Valerie Keeler, son Jeff and son Alex and his mother Megan Keeler; son Dean (Nicole) children Sidney and Layne; Diann Lorinczy (Brent Reid); son Rylee Lorinczy (Amanda) children Jace and Kai; son Chance Lorinczy (Jen) adopted daughter Destiny; son Tyrel Lorinczy (Jayde) daughter Marisa; Steven Reid (Heidi) daughters Sienna and Kennedy; and Brenden Reid.
Grandma also leaves others special to her: sister in-laws Jean Keeler and Daphne Keeler; niece Maxine (Lief) Jepson; Barb Maciever and Tom; June and Max at the condo; her Home Care workers; and many other family and friends who were privileged to have known Grandma over the years. Although Grandma never thought so, Grandma was indeed a very unique and special person. She was a very selfless person who held a lot of love in her heart for each and every member of her family, her animals and friends, and asked for so very little.

Always in our hearts Grandma,
Until we are together again.
We will always love you.

A Funeral Service will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. with Canon James Robinson officiating. Eileen will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Roy in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat. In memory of Grandma, grandma would be pleased donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Foundation, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5.

MAURICE JOHN (JACK) KNOWLES

August 1, 1941 – August 3, 2018

Our man Jack, the light of our lives and a bright light in Medicine Hat, hung up his tool belt on Friday, August 3, 2018. Jack passed away peacefully at home in the company of his family, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Cherishing his memory are his adoring family: Dawn, his wife of 53 years; his two children, Katharine Knowles (Chris Mazurenko) of Vancouver and Tanis Knowles Yarnell (Patrick Yarnell) of Winnipeg; his two grandchildren, Olivia and Eric Yarnell; his sister Maureen (John) Dowler, brother Len Knowles, brother-in-law Bill (Monique) Pringle, uncle Len (Laurie) Sharland of Medicine Hat; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, all who miss him dearly. Jack was born in Medicine Hat on August 1, 1941 and was very proud of this city. In his personal life, Jack was known as many different things to many people. He was a Queen Scout, pigeon fancier, keeper of 101 dalmatians, king of the disco, photography hobbyist, Medicine Hat history buff, proud Kiwanian and Kinsman, part-time Shriner, possibly a Mason (he kept it a secret), challenger of City Hall, David Suzuki super-fan, professional and personal mentor, promoter of the local Prostate Cancer Support Group, and lover of bagpipes and all things plaid. He had a creative mind and great sense of humour. His practical jokes were legendary. He was a collector of many things, and had over 83 screwdrivers, 55 rolls of electrical tape, 41 staple guns, 27 vintage lightbulbs, and countless friends and neighbours, new and old, all who will miss seeing him around. He followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a Master Electrician, and took over the family business ‘Knowles Electric’ which he was proud to say was in business for over 80 years. Everyone knew where to find Jack—his shop door was always open. He was never too busy for a friend. His belief in people never wavered, often giving people who needed it advice, support, or a job. He believed in second chances. He had a collection of funny photos and signs posted at his shop and one of them said, ‘Never Give Up’ and he never did. He never gave up on people, projects, the hope that he would beat cancer, and that he would have more time. Jack spent his last few weeks in his backyard supervising work being done on many projects he always meant to do, even making a tree swing for his grandchildren. Family and close friends celebrated his 77th birthday with him on August 1st at a beautiful backyard party. He died two days later with paint on his hands and a golden tan from hours spent sitting outside, doing jobs, and listening to the birds in his beloved crabapple trees. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 3:00pm at Westminster United Church, 101 6th Street SE, Medicine Hat. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place immediately following the service at the Carriage House at the Medicine Hat Stampede Grounds, 2055 21st Avenue SE. All are welcome. Messages of remembrance and sympathy may be expressed by visiting: http://www.cooksouthland.com. Memorial gifts may be made to the Medicine Hat Prostate Cancer Support Group or the David Suzuki Foundation. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 13th Street, SW, Medicine Hat, tel: 403.527.6455.

She was predeceased by: her son, Wade Haas; her parents, William and Mary Bischke; her sister and brother-in-law, Leah and Herb Ginther; her brother and sister-in-law, Reuben and Agnes Bischke; and sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Don Kanewischer. She was also predeceased by her parents in law, Adam and Tillie Haas.
Alice was born on May 26, 1930 in Medicine Hat and grew-up on the farm near Elkwater. As a young adult she moved to Medicine Hat where she met Ephraim Haas and they were married December 30, 1950. They lived in Hilda until they moved to Medicine Hat in 1960 where Ephraim and Alice were involved in the automotive industry.
Alice was interested in people, was hospitable and gracious, with her home always available for any celebration, she was a fabulous cook and baker. There was always room for one more at the table. Alice had lovely taste not only for food but also for decorating and clothes. She was a meticulous housekeeper and enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She was always learning and reading and found the computer a great hobby and hours of enjoyment as she prepared her own greeting cards and photo cards to share with others.
She and Ephraim loved to travel over the years often with family or friends and they have many pictures and artifacts to show for their trips
She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and had a big heart for couples serving as Missionaries and Pastors. We are comforted by knowing she is now in Heaven and is reunited with those who have gone before. She suffered with the effects of Alzheimer’s the last 5 years but her sweet spirit often shone through with her winning smile and sparkling eyes. She is free of pain and sorrow and now dwells where the roses never fade.
We are so grateful for the loving care she received in the 3 care facilities she experienced during this journey.

FIEBER

Helen Lorraine Fieber was raised by her parents, Martha and Henry Wolff along with her brother, George and sister Yvonne. She spent her childhood years in Irvine and, after deciding that life on the farm was not her calling, went to Normal School to become a teacher. Lorraine’s first teaching position was in Irvine and she later went on to teach at Elm Street and Crestwood schools, finishing her career at Montreal Street School. Music was her passion and her students learned that music was fun! Lorraine loved shoes and she particularly enjoyed wearing her fancy shoes to go dancing at the Moose on Saturday nights with her late husband Lester.
Lorraine single-handedly raised three great kids: Neil, Paula, and Lee. Although times were sometimes tough she managed to provide a safe, happy and adventurous home with good food, music and cats. She always maintained that raising kids that played freely on the "bald headed prairie" made them hardy.
Family, friends, and her cats brought joy to her life. She was delighted with her grandchildren, Andrew, Kandis and Tamara, playing Skippo, reading and baking for them. She always made an effort to get together with those she loved. Pizza night with the girls was something she looked forward to and wouldn't miss, nor would she miss her commitment and service to the Order of the Royal Purple. She contributed much to her position and was always available to play the piano and help and guide new and existing members.
Lorraine was an adventurous cook, always trying something new and interesting to fit the occasion. As music was important to her, she would often be found singing as she cooked or tidied up. In fact, on Canada's 150 birthday she surprised her family by singing all the verses of O'Canada. Who knew there was more than one? Lorraine did!
Medicine Hat was her home except for a 3-year residence in Penticton where she and Lester started a bed and breakfast, Panorama Place. They returned to the Hat because she missed the prairie, open skies and sunsets, not to mention her friends.
Lorraine and Les had a timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and always looked forward to their annual get away. She was always interested in the culture, food, customs, shoes and music of any country she travelled to.
Lorraine moved to Langley in 2011 to be closer to the support of her daughters but didn't particularly like the area citing “too many trees”. She often asked if she could go home to her beloved praries. Lorraine was a prairie girl and in our hearts, she will always be.
She died at peacefully at Jackman Manor, Aldergrove, B.C.,on March 20, 2018.
You are welcome to celebrate her life on Saturday, August 11 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Medicine Hat Golf Club. Refreshments and sandwiches will be provided. Wear your best shoes if you are so inclined. She would have liked that.

MARY KATHLEEN “KATHIE” McKINLEY

April 11, 1949 ~ July 27, 2018

With deep sadness Warren McKinley announces that his dear wife Kathie, of 48 years, passed away peacefully in his presence on the morning of July 27, 2018 at the St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice in Riverside. Kathie also leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lisa McKinley Surber of Newell, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Corbin of Bozeman, Montana and Cameron of Belgrade; one brother, Tim (Kathy) Sharp of Edmonton; five sisters, Mary (Ray) May of Edmonton, Ann Sharp of Calgary, Brenda (Robert) Deleau of Parksville, BC, Cecelia "Cathy" Sharp of Calgary and Janine Coté of Parksville, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathie was predeceased by her parents, James "Jim" and Eileen Sharp; two brothers-in-law, Dick McKinley and Larry Coté; and her father and mother-in-law, Guy & Muriel McKinley. Kathie was brought into retail by her father, Jim Sharp, the proprietor of Hutchings and Sharp Western Store, at a very young age. Hutchings and Sharp had deep roots with the ranching community in Western Canada and served as an anchor of the downtown community of Medicine Hat. After school, she would join her father in the store to work and, early on, enjoyed spending time with Jim’s partner, Harry Hutchings, from whom she learned a great deal. As her business knowledge and interest blossomed, she assumed increasing responsibilities with the store and took over all aspects of management well before her father’s passing. Kathie was particularly fond of choosing styles for the upcoming season on buying trips, creating unique and innovative forms of advertising, and dressing the store front windows. She had an eye for fashion and was well known for helping people look their best for any occasion. Kathie mentored and developed fond friendships with many employees over the years. She was a committed supporter of the downtown business community serving many years on the Downtown Business Revitalization Zone where she was instrumental in bringing the Heritage Canada Main Street Program to Medicine Hat. All who knew Kathie recognized that she took great pride in owning and operating Hutchings and Sharp.
After a brief time attending college business classes, Kathie married Warren McKinley in 1970 and stepped into the role of a ranch wife and all it entailed, supporting Warren and his father, Guy with McKinley Hereford Farms. Kathie shared her life lovingly with Warren for over 48 years. Much like the other aspects of her life, Kathie embraced ranch life with zest and developed a passion for it. Her duties were never ending; from helping to save calves in the spring, to moving and trailing cattle, and preparing ranch meals. She did all this while working and managing the store and raising their daughter, Lisa. Annual branding meals were anticipated and revered by many. Kathie was never satisfied unless the meal was perfect; loving to put on a spread, achieving a perfectly cooked roast beef while finding the right tablecloth and the perfect prairie flowers to match. One of her passions was cooking and no one left hungry from her dinner table and if they did it was their own damn fault. Manx cats and border collies were beneficiaries of her caring and kind hearted nature. Over the years, as Lisa became more active in 4-H, riding and horses, Kathie and Warren took great pride in seeing Lisa achieve horseback successes. She was extremely supportive and encouraging of Lisa’s endeavors and was particularly proud of Lisa’s academic achievements and career path in the Agricultural industry. An additional role that Kathie took pride in playing was Grandma to her grandsons, Corbin and Cameron. She deeply loved her grandsons and nothing gave her more pleasure than seeing those boys doing ranch activities or riding with Warren. She was notorious for spoiling them on birthdays and Christmas. A Celebration of Kathie's Life will be held at the MEDICINE HAT EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE GROUNDS, GRANDSTAND BANQUET ROOM, 2055 – 21st Avenue SE, on Friday, August 10th, 2018 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. As an expression of sympathy those wishing to remember Kathie may do so with a gift to the Carmel Hospice (St. Joseph’s Home), 156 – 3rd Street NE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1 or to the Medicine Hat Community Foundation, 104, 430 – 6th Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2S8.

Kathie also leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lisa McKinley Surber of Newell, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Corbin of Bozeman, Montana and Cameron of Belgrade; one brother, Tim (Kathy) Sharp of Edmonton; five sisters, Mary (Ray) May of Edmonton, Ann Sharp of Calgary, Brenda (Robert) Deleau of Parksville, BC, Cecelia “Cathy” Sharp of Calgary and Janine Coté of Parksville, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathie was predeceased by her parents, James “Jim” and Eileen Sharp; two brothers-in-law, Dick McKinley and Larry Coté; and her father and mother-in-law, Guy & Muriel McKinley.
A Celebration of Kathie’s Life will be held at the MEDICINE HAT EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE GROUNDS, GRANDSTAND BANQUET ROOM, 2055 – 21st Avenue SE, on Friday, August 10th, 2018 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. It is with deep, deep sadness and broken hearts that we share that on August 1, 2018 God took the hand of our precious, precious mom, grandma, and great grandma, EILEEN MILDRED KEELER and she went to be with her loved ones in heaven.

COLLEEN SHEARDOWN

Two weeks ago today, nearly 600 people united at St. Barnabas Anglican Church to honour the life of this very much loved lady. Led by the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, the rumbling sound of the bikes echoed as she was taken to her final place of rest.

The road goes on forever,
My bike, the road and I are free…
The last ride the Lord allows me,
I pray my soul He does keep.

Her Life Lived…
Her Life Cherished…
Her Life Honoured.
