BREKKO

Alma Brekko (nee Brown) of Medicine Hat passed away at Riverview Care Centre on January 7, 2018 at the age of 91 years. Alma was born March 25, 1926 on a farm near Demaine, Saskatchewan. In order to continue her high school education, Alma took a position in the hamlet of Demaine as an au pair. It was there that her intellect and personality came to the attention of the school superintendent, who fast-tracked her entrance from the 11th grade to Normal School in Moose Jaw. After graduating from Normal School with her teaching certificate in 1945, Alma taught grades one to 11 at an isolated one-room school where she lived in a small teacherage on the grounds.
In 1946, Alma married Norman Brekko of Beechy, Saskatchewan and eventually settled in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where she embraced what she considered her greatest accomplishment—-becoming a “career housewife”. In 1961, Norman, Alma, their sons Terry and Roger and infant daughter Sonja moved to a farm near Beechy. Four years later another son, Todd arrived. Alma relished the fresh country air and thought the rural lifestyle ideal for her children. For many years Alma and Norman wintered in Mesa, Arizona, but continued to farm until the age of 65, when they leased the farm out and formally retired to Medicine Hat. Alma was very involved with the Beechy Homemaker’s Club and the Palette Club of Mesa, Arizona, and was known for her tremendous hospitality, culinary expertise, gardening and sewing. At the age of 50 she took up cross country skiing, playing the bass guitar and oil painting and excelled at all. A fast learner, Alma soon joined her husband Norman and son Todd in The Rhythmaires, a local orchestra for which she played bass guitar. Alma was a singer/story teller, traveler, and above all, a devoted wife, mother, and grand- and great grandmother. Alma leaves to cherish her memory her children: Terry (Lyndell), Roger (Therese), Sonja (Wayne) White and Todd (Cedric); eight grandchildren, Tara (Steve) and their daughter, Isla; Tyler, Tobi (Seb) and their children, Sophie and Ewan; Chad (Sabrina) and their children, Eric, Colin and Adam; Chelsey (Mike) and their children, Max and Sophie; Mitch (Corrin) and their daughters, Penny and Sadie; Daniel and Zayne as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is survived by one brother Robert, three sisters Vivian, Jean, Freida and their families. Alma was predeceased by her beloved husband, Norman, parents Herman and Martha Brown; three brothers, Bernard, Otto and James and two sisters, June and Emma. The family would also like to thank Revera Meadowlands for her years spent there and are especially grateful to Dr. Hirsch and the staff at Riverview Care Center for the loving care she received there.
According to Alma’s wish, there will be a private family service at a later date. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Society, 550 Spruce Way SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1B 4P1. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: pattfh@telusplanet.net subject heading: Alma Brekko, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

1924 ~ JOYCE PEARCE ~ 2018

Joyce Pearce (Nicholls), beloved wife of Robert “Bob” Pearce for 70 years, passed away on January 12, 2018 at the age of 93 years. Joyce will lovingly be remembered by her 3 children, Michael (Pauline) Pearce, Ken (Sheila) Pearce, and daughter, Linda (Murray) Dallas. Joyce was an amazing grandmother to Kevin (Lindsey) Pearce, Pamela (Monty) Stokke, Quinten (Alesa) Pearce, Stacey (Andrew) McFetridge, Greg (Jo-Ashlie) Dallas, and Arlette (Joe) Jacob. Her 12 great grandchildren will also carry on her legacy.
Joyce was greeted in heaven by her parents, Arthur and Kate Nicholls; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roland and Nellie Pearce; grandson, Mark Pearce; and her 2 brothers and spouses, Ken and Winnie Nicholls and Les and Elsie Nicholls; and sister and spouse, Irene and Leonard Purchase. As well as brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Edith Pearce; and nieces and nephews that predeceased her.
Joyce was born in Bristol, England on October 20, 1924. She met the love of her life, a Canadian soldier named Bob Pearce, on a rainy night in Bristol and the rest is history. A long journey on the SS Aquitania across the Atlantic had her arriving in Canada on June 6, 1947 and married July 21, 1947 at Maple Creek, SK. They lived on a farm near Maple Creek where they raised their family, until moving to Medicine Hat in the fall of 1997.
Joyce kept very busy with gardening, canning and freezing her vegetables. Many delicious meals were shared with family and friends. Christmas was her favorite time of year to share all her baking with their company. Joyce always had a Boxing Day feast for all her family and anyone else that wanted to come. There was always a houseful. She really enjoyed having her grandchildren with her at the farm.
She liked to sew and knit in the spare time she had. Her children and grandchildren were always dressed well with her finished projects. Many an outfit was made for the granddaughter’s dolls, some of which the great grandchildren still are enjoying.
Joyce had many wonderful qualities that have been passed on and will be remembered by all. She enjoyed music and dancing, playing cards/board games, was family oriented, hardworking, quick witted, had a love for children, was tenacious and as her husband Bob would say, she was “little but loud”.
Joyce always loved her cats on the farm and managed to bring one with her when they moved to Medicine Hat. Katie was a spoiled cat that lived to a good old age and didn’t really like anyone but Joyce.
A private celebration of life will be held at Saamis Creekside Reception Centre on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Special thank you to Carmel Hospice Staff and the heart felt care they provided. Ralph farmed at Portreeve, Saskatchewan until 1979 when he and Elizabeth retired and moved to Medicine Hat. All of his life he enjoyed the company of people. While still on the farm daily trips were made to town to pick up the mail and stop at Jack’s garage to visit whomever was there. During retirement in Medicine Hat the visiting continued, most often with neighbours over the fence but sometimes just with people walking by. Visits from family were cherished and extended stays were encouraged. In 2013, both Ralph and Elizabeth moved from their house in Crescent Heights to the South Country Village Care complex in Medicine Hat. Here he resided until poor health forced a brief palliative stay at St. Joseph’s Home where he passed away. Last but not least, special thanks needs to be given to staff at Haven Care Centre (South Country Village) and St. Joseph’s Home for the compassion shown and the impeccable care given. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the church on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:25 a.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church (238 2nd Ave N.E.) on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. CHRISTOPHER SIDNEY MANN "BUD"

Chris was born on December 10, 1972 to Mervyn and Hazel Mann of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of five. Chris attended Haig School, Weyburn Junior High and then graduated from Weyburn Comprehensive School in 1991. He was a busy boy who excelled at many sports. Hockey was always his favorite playing on many rep hockey teams in his younger years. He was always a team player who played with a lot of heart and was a joy to watch. He also played for the Midale Mustangs in the Senior League. When Chris was done playing competitive hockey, he decided to become a referee, which he did part time for many years. He enjoyed tennis and you would find him many days on the tennis courts playing during the summer months. He also enjoyed fishing, boating and water sports. As Chris got older, he added golf to his list of favorite sports and worked as a Greenskeeper at Weyburn Golf Club for a few seasons. His older siblings loved spending time with him and took him on many outings and trips. One of his favorites was his first Edmonton Oilers game at the age of twelve. He was a huge Oilers fan then and never gave up on them. On October 30, 1995 he became a father to a beautiful baby girl, Havyn. She has been the apple of his eye ever since. He truly adored her. Chris was a patient, kind, understanding and devoted father. The last few years he has had the absolute joy of being a grandparent to two beautiful grandchildren, Rylen and Rose. He loved to make them laugh and smile, which was easy for him to do with his forever smile and humour. Chris loved the time that he got to spend with them. After living in Edmonton for a couple of years, he settled in Medicine Hat. He worked at Lakeside Packers and Form-Tech Machining and then settled into the oilfield industry. Chris worked for Schlumberger, Calfrac and was working for Iron Horse Energy Services until his passing. He enjoyed the times with his fellow crew members. In January 2015, Chris re-connected with an old school friend, Carla Knibbs, who became the love of his life. They only had a few short years, but enjoyed every moment that they had together. They were to become husband and wife in a few short weeks. Carla’s son, Brock, also found a connection with Chris, who quickly accepted the role as his devoted father figure. For everyone who had the honour of knowing Chris, you are truly blessed. For all of his family and friends who love him, there will always be a big hole in our hearts and in our lives. You are now our Angel Bud. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at THE ESPLANADE, 401 – 1 Street SE, on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Shane P. ~ ANDREA CRAWFORD ~

NEE JORGENSON
March 15, 1928 – January 19, 2018

Andrea Crawford, beloved Mother and Grandmother, passed away peacefully in the arms of her daughter Dee, on January 19th, 2018 at the age of 89 years.
Her thoughtful, elegant, artistic spirit will be greatly missed by her daughters, Dee (Gordon) Wagner and Laur Crawford (Rick Stieben); her cherished granddaughter, Caitlyn Wagner; her sister, Aileen Burness; and her many nieces, nephews and friends.
Andrea was predeceased by her father Hilbert Jorgenson (born in Norway 1890; died in Edmonton 1932) and her mother Lorina McConvey Jorgenson (born in Vancouver, 1894; died in Edmonton, 1932), and even though her time with them was brief, she kept their loving memory alive throughout her life. She was also predeceased by her husband, Charles Hyslop Crawford, born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1919 and died in Powell River, BC in 1996.
Orphaned in the Great Depression, she suffered many hardships but persevered with grace and beauty and was fiercely independent. Her honesty and integrity were an inspiration, her wisdom was invaluable and her sense of humor was a joy.
Andrea had a marvelous, adventurous soul and loved travel, particularly road trips where she could drive and experience the full vista of nature before her. She documented every place and event in photos with her ever-present camera and this was her love letter to the people and places she treasured.
As a young woman she was very involved in amateur theatre on the west coast on stage and radio. She excelled at everything that interested her: fly fishing, tennis, sailing and golf in her younger years, and sewing, cooking and gardening as a stay at home Mother. When she went back to work, she had a successful career as a legal secretary for Suncor in Calgary, and during that time enjoyed the Opera and the Calgary Philharmonic with her best friend, Dorothy Hawley.
But what she was most proud of was being a Mum – she was thrilled to have a family of her own to express all the love and devotion she had longed for since her childhood, and we were blessed to always be her priority.
Andrea continued her love of reading philosophy, history and politics and her life-long passion of learning, and in her final days she could be seen wearing her headphones, listening to The Great Courses ‘The 30 Greatest Orchestral Works’ and jotting down quotations and scripture. She gained tremendous comfort from her favourite 23rd Psalm: ‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me’…
Dr. Monty said she endured her final years of pain and infirmity without complaint and with her characteristic courage and dignity. A very heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nunweiler, Dr. Monty and all the wonderful staff at Riverview Care Centre for their exemplary care.

A Poem written by Andrea’s daughter Laur Crawford

If the sun does blind you
And no more does the rain glisten on the grey
I will float
over the road on the hill
to the cottage
By that lane I will hover
Feeling a picture you’ve given me

And when I pass through
the hawk shaped opening
of the clouds
I won’t remember the cliffs by the courses with you
But I will feel you missing
And drift on a flowing line
of birds to you
for your eyes are bright.

A Private Family Graveside Service for Andrea will be held in Edmonton at a later date. Cards of condolence may be sent to Caitlyn or Dee Wagner at 1803 – 20 Ave. S.E. Medicine Hat, T1A 3X6, and condolences may be sent through http://www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Andrea Crawford. Arrangements entrusted to
