JOHN WILLIAM HUNTER

May 16, 1947 ~ February 7, 2018

It is with profound sadness that the Hunter family announces John’s passing at the age of 71 years. He valiantly battled cancer for nearly eight years, after being told he would probably live no more than two years. His stubborn nature stood him in good stead. John spent his entire adult life in service to Canada. First, having spent 32 years in the military, then 12 years as a special constable with the Medicine Hat Police Service. He was a kind and generous man who took pleasure in buying lunch for strangers. John was born in New Brunswick, the third of five children. He is survived by two brothers, Paul and David; and a sister, Mary. He is also survived by his wife of 50 years, Joanne; his sons, Jason (Danielle) and Jeremy (Ang); as well as his daughter, Jill Marie (BJ) Brooks. He has five beloved grandchildren, Annette, Claire and Evelyn Hunter, and Stephen and Patrick Brooks. Awaiting him in Heaven are his parents, one brother, and a grandson, Brandon. John loved WHL hockey and was a staunch Tigers fan. Please feel free to wear your Tigers gear as it would have made him smile. Special thanks go to the Cancer Centre, Palliative Care, Home Care and We Care. The staff at St. Joseph’s Home is amazing. There will be a special spot in Heaven for all of you. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:25 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. David J. Doreen Byam of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Raymond Byam, passed away on Friday, February 9th, 2018 at the age of 94 years. Doreen leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Richard (Marilyn) Byam of Rycroft, Alberta and Philip Byam of Redcliff; four grandchildren, Tracey Byam, James (Priscilla) Byam, Scott (Tonya) Byam and Anthony Byam; seven great grandchildren, Katelyn, Jessica, Savana, Celena, Kelin, Amber and Jace; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Byam; her parents, Alfred and Elizabeth Touzel; one brother, Philip Touzel; and one sister, Elsie Collas. Doreen was born on July 13th, 1923 in St. Saviour, Jersey, Channel Islands. During Word War II she and her family were evacuated to Farley Green, England. It was during this time that Doreen met and married Raymond. They married on April 8th, 1944 at Albury, England. After the war Doreen came to Canada as a war bride and had to make many adjustments – no electricity, no running water and no inside bathrooms. At first they lived in Bow Island where Richard was born. They relocated to Redcliff where Philip was born. Redcliff has remained her home since. After her sons grew she operated a kindergarten and worked for the Redcliff School District and had many fond memories of all the children she encountered in the 35 combined years of service. She also served for 32 years in the Cub Scouts as an Akela. Doreen will always be remembered for her passion to knit. Many people have enjoyed her talent as she gave much of her creations to the Women's Shelter or anyone else in need of scarfs or mittens. However, her greatest love is her family. Doreen’s family would like to thank Dr. Hall and the Management and staff at River Ridge for their wonderful care over the years. The Funeral Service will be held at ST. AMBROSE ANGLICAN CHURCH, 505 – 5th Street SE, Redcliff, on Thursday, February 15th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. David J. Carter and Lay Reader Eldean Parnall co-officiating. Don Mohninger

January 26, 1946 – February 13, 2018
We are devastated to announce the sudden passing of an amazing man, husband, father, grampa and “Best Buddy”. Dad passed away February 13, 2018 in Medicine Hat, AB at the age of 72 years. Dad was born to Elizabeth and Henry Mohninger in Humboldt, SK. and grew up in St. Brieux, SK. He met mom in Saskatoon and they married on February 27, 1975. In 2007, they followed us out of Fort McMurray and retired to Medicine Hat. Dad was an avid sports-fan with a great sense of humor. His family describes him as fun loving, patient and kind. He was always there to listen and always knew what to say. He was a hard working man and enjoyed the simple things in life. Dedicated to his family, he will be missed beyond belief. He leaves “The Crew” behind to carry on his memory – Vivian (Giles), his faithful, devoted wife of 43 years, their daughters Angela (Wayne) Daviduck and Sheri (Tom) Power, and the most important, his grandkids, Shilah, Erik, Meagan, Mylie, Nick, Megan and loyal dog Joey. LEROY AARON SEMRAU

April 1, 1935 – February 15, 2018

With an appreciation for a happy life and the love of many, Leroy Aaron Semrau passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at the age of 82 years. As a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, many will miss him dearly. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Loretta "Lottie" Semrau (nee: Dunz); his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Marlene Semrau, and their two daughters, Danielle (Ian McLean) and Nikki (Tristan Matz); his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Doug Mastel, and their four sons, Matt (Shelby) and their son Theo, Mitchell (Jules Rooks), Ryan and Nolan (Desiree Naude); his brother and sister-in-law, Elvin "Peng" and Karen Semrau, and their family. Leroy was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Mary Semrau.
Leroy was born in Kincaid, Saskatchewan, where the family farmed until 1966. In 1961, the family ventured into the motel business in Medicine Hat, operating the Trans Canada and Cloverleaf Motels until 1978. They built and operated an amusement park from 1966 to 1977. Leroy and Lottie built the Travelodge Hotel in 1973 with their business partners Peng and Karen Semrau and Fred and Audrey Ammann. The families were involved in this business until it sold in 1998. In addition to the motel/hotel business, an interest in warehousing fostered the beginning of G.E.L. Holdings Ltd. in 1973, and this company continues to operate today. Leroy was a visionary who had a strong work ethic and a passion for business. Not afraid to get his hands dirty, he was active in the development of the family businesses and literally helped to build them from the ground up.
Although Leroy had success in business, his greatest source of joy came from his family. Watching his six grandchildren grow up provided Leroy with tremendous happiness. Many hours were spent with "Papa" enjoying all that life has to offer. His devotion to his grandchildren was evident in the family ski trips to Elkwater and Whitefish, camping trips to Lac Pelletier and Lake Newell, fishing adventures, golf outings, go-cart and dirt bike rides, workshop adventures, boating trips and lunches at A & W. Starting in 1991, Leroy and Lottie began spending the winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona. It was here that some of the best family memories were created. Travelling to see Papa and Nannie became an annual event where the fun never ended. Papa Leroy was looking forward to spending time with the next generation. The recent birth of his first great-grandchild, Theo, was a tremendous source of pride.
The family would like to extend a very special thank-you to Dr. Tom and Michelle Mohanraj who went above and beyond the call of duty. In Leroy's words, "Tom is a great doctor and a great friend." Thank-you as well to the tremendous nursing staff on 5 East, who took exceptional care of Papa and offered the family compassion and comfort.
A private family gathering to honour Leroy's memory will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Leroy can do so with a donation to Kidsport Medicine Hat and Redcliff (PO Box 40009- 355 Southridge Dr. S.E. Medicine Hat, Alberta T1B 4S6) or to the Medicine Hat SPCA (55 Southwest Drive S.W., Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8E8). ANNABELLE MARTENS

This is Annabelle, our beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend. After a brief battle with cancer, Annabelle left us on February 23, 2018, her benediction the words of the old hymn she softly sang, “All the way my Saviour leads me, What have I to ask beside…” She was 84 years old. Annabelle is predeceased by Menno, her husband of 57 years, and is mourned by her three children, spouses and families: Reynold (Ingrid) Martens and their children Nelson Martens (Maria Dasilva) and Reid; Lionel (Jane) Martens and their children Christie (Evan) Peters and Lindsay Martens (Matt Moore); and Janet (Norman) Woltmann and their children Laura (Jeff) Mathew, Kate (Nathan) Regier and Nathan, and great- grandchildren James, Maya, Ellis, Adeline and Levi.
How do you best describe Annabelle? Kind, compassionate, generous, considerate, selfless, humble, serene, loving, loveable and fun. She was always dressed fashionably with everything matching and her hair just right. Annabelle was our royalty and yet she wasn’t about status or titles. She loved playing the supporting role and did so effortlessly. She was the teacher’s aid, the volunteer at the local thrift store and above all, the selfless support for Menno throughout his academic career and many volunteer activities. Annabelle was always ready for that next trip to the farm, holiday excursion or countless trips to Winnipeg to visit her kids. She was also courageous and adaptable. When her husband Menno passed away several years ago, she left her dear friends in Swift Current and moved to Winnipeg where her children resided. She ventured out in her car on her charted routes to see family, attended church, ran errands or just had a coffee. Her stated goal to the end was to be a blessing to her family and she surely was. Her children and grandchildren loved to take her out for a bite or a coffee. She never said no to time out with her family or to picking up the tab. She also never missed an anniversary or birthday card which she generously stuffed with a crisp new bill or two. Annabelle laughed easily, loved life and faithfully recorded even the mundane events of the day in her diary. She chose to follow after Jesus early in life and finished well as His good and faithful friend. Being there for others, especially for her family, was Annabelle’s greatest achievement. We love you and will miss you greatly.
Thanks to the caregivers at River Ridge and Seven Oaks Hospital, and a special thanks to Alvina, Annabelle’s sister and bedside angel during her final days. Annabelle will be remembered at a private family gathering in Winnipeg. A memorial service in Swift Current will be scheduled for the spring.
“…This my song through endless ages, Jesus led me all the way.”

LESLEY CSIKANY

September 20, 1934 ~ February 4, 2018

Laszlo ‘Leslie' Csikany was born in Hungry, September 20, 1934. His father was a lawyer and his mother, a caring lady who looked after their three sons and four daughters. When Leslie finished high school he enlisted in the military but his dislike of the war and killing was not his way. Following his term in the military, he returned home. His father advised him to go to Canada in which he took the advice and landed in Halifax. Leslie worked at many jobs before making his way west and settling in Medicine Hat. There he worked at a variety of jobs until he gained employment at Maple Leaf Flour Mills working his way up to a Miller until they closed. Leslie then began work as a contractor building homes which was not to his liking, so he went to college to learn the language as well as completing a carpentry course. He then went on to build many homes in the city with finish painting as his passion. When the 80’s came there was very little work so his company moved to Ontario where there was no shortage of jobs. Leslie married late in life to the love of his life who had three small children and together they added a son to the family. Leslie loved his family and they were the love of his life. Health problems hit him with a serious heart attack at Big ‘O’ Tires which ended his career, so he became the family cook and he loved it! Life hit him hard when his eldest daughter died and six months later his wife suddenly passed away. Leslie moved to a Senior's Home when his youngest daughter passed away and found out all four sisters and two brothers in Hungary had passed away as well. He was very ill but still had a little caring left in him. This is when he met Dorothy Bowles coming back from cancer treatments. Both Leslie and Dorothy were very ill but found that caring for each other helped. Unhappy with their current living conditions, they moved to Chinook Village to make a better life for themselves. They fell in love and were married in September of 2014. Their soup kitchen was well known to anyone who needed it. Leslie learned about his ‘Irish’ wife, not only for her cooking but the love of her joking, travelling and a new family that loved him. Their love of dancing helped to created a dance club at Chinook Village which continues to this day. "My blue eyes are gone but not forgotten, as God is looking after him now". Leslie is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Leonard (Penny) and family, Cory (Angie) and family; a step-daughter, Tristin; brother, Bill (Cathy) in Hungary as well as many others he never got to know; sister-in-law, Judy (Gary) Sutherland and family as well as brother-in-law, Leonard Desharny and family. A Come & Go Tea will be held at the Chinook Village in the Terrace Room, 2801 – 13 Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, AB., on March 31, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Your presence is your gift, flowers and cards are gratefully declined. The family wish to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital – Palliative Care staff for the excellent care they provided to Leslie as well as to the Walmart Pharmacy and staff. They also wish to acknowledge the staff at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice where Leslie received wonderful care during his final days. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) If friends so desire, memorial donations in Laszlo’s name may be made directly to a charity of ones choice.
