1936 ~ McKENZIE ~ 2016

It is with loving hearts that the family of Shirley Mae McKenzie announce her peaceful passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Tuesday September 6, 2016 at the age of 80 years. Shirley leaves behind her beloved husband, Bill; her daughters, Mary (George Anderson) and Margaret (David Farran); and four grandchildren, Leigh Farran, Anne Anderson, Reid Anderson and Tom Farran. She will be sadly missed by brother-in-law, Norman (Angele) McKenzie; and many nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Patsy Malasky. Shirley was born in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan on May 15, 1936 and was the only child of United Church minister Enos Montour and his wife Hilda. She lived in various towns in Saskatchewan as a child and spent her teenage years in Hagersville, Ontario before moving to Aneroid, Saskatchewan in 1953. Shirley and Bill were married on December 3, 1954 and spent the next forty years farming, raising their family and contributing to the Saskatchewan communities of Aneroid, Ponteix and Outlook. In 1994, they retired to Medicine Hat and continued to enjoy a busy life of socializing with friends and family, travelling around Canada and the USA, spending time at the family cottage at Cypress Hills and volunteering in the community. Shirley’s love of people and her outgoing personality shone like a beacon to all who knew her. She loved music and spent many happy hours playing piano and singing for others, most recently with her friends Richard and Len as part of the We Three. Shirley’s family was her pride and joy – she adored her grandchildren and loved to organize family reunions and celebrations. A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE, on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Shane P. Andrus officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Shirley’s name may be made to the Salvation Army, 164 Stratton Way SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1B 3R3 or to the charity of one’s choice. Don is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Deni; his children, Kyle (Emily), Tanner (Elysia), and his twins Shaye and Jace; foster son, Terry (Brenda) Moser and their daughter, Callie; and Brandon Burles, who was just like his son; two granddaughters, Abby Jean Watson and Summer Aberdeen Corner; two brothers, Bob (Lori) Watson and Vic (Sandra) Watson; one sister, Anita (Dan) Thomson, Deni’s mother, Jean Cozart; Deni’s family, Hal (Di) Cozart, Brett (Beth) Cozart, Chris (Mark) Luthin, Troy (Louise) Cozart and Kym Cozart as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Sheila his son, Trevor; his sister, Diane in childhood and his father-in-law, Ab Cozart. Originally from Calgary, Don convinced Deni into moving back to Redcliff for a temporary position at CHAT News. After 27 years, the Watson clan is still happy to call Redcliff home. After years in radio and as the local “sports guy” on TV, Don switched to a career in real estate. Although he enjoyed great success as the “house guy”, in 2008, Don and Deni bought Trukkers Restaurant, where he remained the “food guy” until his passing. Don loved his family and life in general. He took great pride in his children, considering them his greatest accomplishments and success. He was the most proud father ever! Don had the opportunity to travel a great deal with family and friends, creating many memories that would last a lifetime. Music, sports and politics were great passions of Don’s. He always seemed to know everything that was happening in the world, leaving others wondering how he was able to hold so much information in that brain of his. Don loved to laugh and loved people. He touched many with his kind words and gentle heart. Don’s inviting nature made his house a home full of love and laughter for all those who entered (some who never left). Despite his illness over the last few years, his granddaughter, Abby lit up his world like no other, often carrying him through the difficult times. They shared an incredible bond. Don was so looking forward to meeting his new granddaughter, Summer Aberdeen and two more grand-babies that are due in January, however, God had other plans. Don will be truly missed by his family and all who knew him but the memories he created will be forever etched in our hearts. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the church on Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Glenview Church of the Nazarene (4235 Black and White Trail) on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Joshua Falk officiating. DWAYNE PFEIFER

1961 ~ 2016

It is with broken hearts that the family of Dwayne Edward Michael Pfeifer, announce his passing in Medicine Hat on Monday, September 12, 2016, at the age of 55 years. Dwayne will be forever cherished by his wife, Sandi and children: daughter, Courtney (Chad) Thompson – (Brevyn and Meara) and son, Ryan (Breanne) Pfeifer; parents, Leo and Josephine Pfeifer; two sisters, Bonnie Pfeifer (Howard Schwandt) – nephew, Mark Everlinas (Kylee), and Shelly (Jim) Brouwer; best friends, Ron Fode and Scott Werre as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Dwayne was born on April 9, 1961, in Medicine Hat, a son to proud parents, Leo and Josephine Pfeifer. He was raised in Medicine Hat and graduated from Medicine Hat High School. As a normal teenager driving around, a pretty young lady caught his eye and he knew she was someone he just had to meet! Dwayne started working at Dome Glass, the same place Sandi was working, and the two teenage sweethearts began dating. They were married in Medicine Hat on February 27, 1982 and were blessed with two children. Their love for each other was a true love story as they had found their soulmates. Dwayne always wanted the most for his family so he decided to further his education by taking Power Engineering. Shortly thereafter, he gained employment with AEC (Encana) currently Cenovus, and was a loyal, dedicated employee for over 25 years. He was meticulous in his work and was well respected by his peers as he truly valued his work and the people he worked with. Dwayne was an achiever – it didn’t matter what he attempted, he was always good at it. If it was sports, he excelled – be it golf, baseball, hockey or any sport – he was a gifted athlete. He was also mechanically inclined and could fix or do literally anything he put his mind to and not only do it, but do it well. Dwayne absolutely loved fishing! He spent countless hours on his boat “Organized Chaos” in open waters reeling in fish after fish. He had a genuine knowledge of fishing and was eager to teach anyone who wanted to learn and looked forward to pass this on to his grandchildren. This was a passion that was very evident. While Dwayne loved the sport of fishing, he also loved mother nature and the wildlife and made sure the birds and animals behind his yard were well fed. Dwayne was a one of a kind man who was absolutely full of life. He was witty and fun and was simply adored by everyone. A true gentleman, he never spoke a harsh word and would go out of his way to do anything for anyone. People naturally gravitated towards him and he was well-liked by everyone he met. He gave selflessly to others and expected nothing in return. Most of all – he was a wonderful family man who took care of his family like no other. Dwayne was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He was the kind of person you would want to have in your life. His love for family was unmatched and he was not only loved deeply in return, he was adored and will be tremendously missed by all who knew him. Words cannot express how well loved and amazing of a person Dwayne really was and we are forever grateful to have had him in our lives. A non-denominational Celebration of Dwayne’s life will be held at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, September 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) Memorial donations in Dwayne’s name may be made directly to the Medicine Hat & District Food Bank, 532 South Railway Street, S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2V6.. November 6, 1934 – September 17, 2016
Born in a rural farmhouse in Rockyford, Alberta, Lynn lived throughout the province before settling in Medicine Hat for the last 40 years. He traveled the world yet always returned to his beloved prairies. Lynn was a true jack of all trades, including many years as a power lineman. Throughout his eighty-one years there is hardly a vocation that he did not pursue. The job he loved most however, was thirteen years spent as the live-in caretaker at Echo Dale Park following his retirement. He treated everyone equally and had a unique ability to connect with all he came into contact with. His quick wit and ability to match any moment with the perfect aphorism will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. He leaves his beloved wife of 48 years, Christine Suelzle. His legacy lives on with his sons and their children; Terry Suelzle of White Rock, BC [Ryker, Jazmyn, Ewan], Trevor (Rebecca) Suelzle of Salt Lake City, UT [Elle, Ainsley, Anden, Oriahna, Petra]; daughter-in-law, Nikki (Todd) Johansen of Medicine Hat, AB [Ethan, Joshua, Adam, Ayla]. He is predeceased by his youngest son, Dr. Troy J. Suelzle; and his younger sister, Margaret Rose. Survived by his twin sisters, Evelyn Lumsden and Eunice Weisbeck. His was a life lived to the fullest, his passing a period of unmatched dignity and poise. In his final weeks he was able to claim that he left nothing on his bucket list, so he kicked it. A gentle, kind man has left us and will be missed greatly. As a tribute to Lynn, tell a joke, make a friend, and cheer for the Jays. A Memorial Service will be held at CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, 1865 Division Avenue NE, on Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Mike McClung officiating. Memorial gifts in Lynn's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 or to the Palliative Care Unit, c/o Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation, 666 – 5th Street SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 4H6.
RONALD “TERRY” SCHANK

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Terry on Sunday, September 18th, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Ron (Andrea) Schank and Angie (Jeff) Kettles; and grandchildren, Sebastian, Ella, Isabel, and Ruby. Terry is also survived by his brother, Jim (Doreen) Schank and their children, Kim, Carrie, Jason and families; his sister, Carol (Walter) Krysiak and their children Cathy, Karen, and families; two brothers-in-law, Elmer Stabler and Pete Massine; and his sister-in-law, Linda Barrand and her daughter, Lindsay; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Frieda Schank; his brother, Bob; his sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy and Pat; and his mother-in-law, Doris Williams.
Terry was born in Medicine Hat on September 7th, 1956, the youngest of seven siblings. Childhood memories of family, fishing expeditions, camping, Boy Scouts, and hockey were among some of his favourites. He was proud to have traveled to Vancouver with his team to participate in the National Little League Championship in 1967. Terry graduated from MHHS in 1974 and married his high school sweetheart, Susan, in October 1976. Terry and Susan were looking forward to celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in October with an eleven-day cruise exploring the Caribbean.
Terry worked for the City of Medicine Hat Electrical Department as Power Electrician from 1978 until 2005. He then jumped into a new opportunity and became the Assistant Business Manager with the IBEW 254 from 2005 until his retirement in January 2016.
Terry loved his family and friends deeply and looked forward to Sunday suppers where he would cook his favourite meals for his family and friends. He was extremely proud of his children, and was the best “Papa” to his grandkids. He truly loved having his grandchildren at their home for sleepovers, to watch a movie, or read stories to them. Terry and Susan were avid travelers, and loved their river boat cruises in Europe and their numerous Italy trips. Terry’s knowledge and love of 1960’s to 1990’s rock music was amazing. He would not only know all the songs on the albums, but the various artists who played on them. Music could always be heard in their home. Terry was a diehard Montreal Canadiens fan and had some incredible memorabilia of his favourite team. He loved baseball and went to many cactus league games down in Phoenix. He often said there was nothing better than an ice cold beer in one hand and a hotdog in the other, watching ball under the clear blue skies.
Terry loved to get together with friends and sit back and have a few ‘wobbly-pops’ around the fire pit, or sit around the kitchen table to the wee hours of the morning talking about life and the adventures they could do together. Terry had a huge heart and was truly a great friend to many people. He would give the shirt off his back if he knew you needed help.

Betty is also survived by other relatives of the Taylor family. Betty was born in Medicine Hat on August 6th, 1919 to Samuel and Ruth Taylor and attended school there. She received her nursing training at the Vancouver General Hospital and graduated in 1941. Nursing came naturally to Betty, she was always caring and loved looking after people. She worked as a nurse in Medicine Hat, Spokane, Moose Jaw, Montreal and England. In 1943 Betty married Frank W. Butler (RAF) and they were married for 52 years until Frank’s passing in 1996. They loved music and were both active supporters of the Medicine Hat community. Betty was a passionate volunteer with the St. Barnabas Church, the Red Cross, VON, Medicine Hat Hospital Auxiliary, IODE, Medicine Hat Allied Arts, Rotary Music Festival, Medicine Hat Museum and the Historical Society. Betty enjoyed music and participated in several choirs including St. Barnabas Church choir and in the Armstrong Singers until she was 76. Betty moved to Edmonton for 7 years and then to Calgary for 10 years to be close to her family and active with her grandchildren. We are so blessed to have had such a caring and loving mother and Nana. We cherish the many wonderful memories and the journey we shared. Thank you to the care givers at Staywell Manor, Revera Mount Royal and Carewest Garrison Green for your compassion and dedication.
