TONY ROTH

1928 – 2016
Anthony Thomas Roth, beloved husband of Kathleen Roth, passed away in Lethbridge, with family by his side, on Monday, August 15, 2016 at the age of 88 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at Assumption Catholic Church, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1113 – 1 Street East, Bow Island on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. Burial to follow at the Bow Island Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
A dear husband, dad, grandpa “Gramps”, great grandpa, uncle and brother, Tony will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kay and their children Alan (Janet) Roth of Calgary, Loreen (Len) Mezei of Medicine Hat, Gerry (Rhonda) Roth of Lethbridge and Patti (Bill) Kaye of Coaldale; grandchildren Jeffrey Hamilton (Monica), Kristin Doherty (Darren), Amy (Rob) Burton, Stephanie (Jonathan) Beekman, Jennifer (Chris) Harris, Christina Kaye (Kyle), Jessica Roth (Nathan), Eric (Alisha) Mezei, Aaron Kaye, Anthony Gibson (Marina), Anja Roth, and nine great grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his sister Isabelle Allen, sisters-in-law Jeanne Roth, Anne Roth and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his birth mother Anna Roth (nee Schlachter), father Joseph Roth and stepmother Barbara Roth (nee Hertz); brothers George Roth, Jim Roth and Frank Roth; sister Dorothy Rapson and brothers-in-law Wilf Rapson and Dwayne Allen.
Tony was born in Medicine Hat on January 9, 1928. He married his sweetheart Kathleen Simpson on July 6, 1953. Tony and Kay, supported by their children, enjoyed immense good fortune as a family, having been married for sixty three years.
Tony and Kay loved to visit with relatives and friends, go camping and just have people over, with everyone contributing to the stories and memories about lives and times. They were a great couple and just happy to be with each other, wherever “there” might be.
Much of what Tony found precious in life he saw through the eyes of his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren, and he shared a deep bond with every one of them. He had many gifts and a heart of gold, but above all he cared about kids, identified with them and always had their best interests at heart. In him, they recognized a friend; a friend to rely on, to create a secret handshake with, to fix a broken toy, to let them win a game, to bandaid a scrape and when they were older, to teach them how to drive. Tony’s sense of humour kept them entertained while he taught them to paint fences, fish, shoot, garage-sale or a hundred other such vital life skills and most of all, to become upstanding adults. He was “Grandfather” personified. Every one of them, his children included, loved “Gramps” more than anything.
Tony farmed in the Bow Island area for thirty five years before his retirement in 1992. As a farmer, he excelled in invention and creativity with crescent wrench, electric arc welder or acetylene torch in hand, joking how agriculture seemed to have more to do with fixing equipment than with horticulture.
He was also a talented painter and sculptor, creating many pieces of art throughout his lifetime. A man of quiet, solid faith in the Roman Catholic faith, Tony was extremely proud of achieving 4th degree Knighthood with The Knights of Columbus in 1996. He also received the "Melvin Jones Fellow Award" for Humanitarian Services with Lions Club International. He was also a member of the St. Michael's School board for seventeen years.
Tony had a special connection with his surrogate brothers and sisters of the George and Agnes Roth family as they helped raise him and his brothers Jim and George after the passing of his mother at a young age. In his mind, they were his brothers and sisters. Tony and Kay moved to Lethbridge in 1996 where he resided until his passing.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Tony’s name may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society, 740 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0N9 (www.alzheimer.ca).

Otto went off to work on the railroad and in the coal mines at the age of 16, later moving to Medicine Hat. He worked at Dominion Glass in Redcliff for 25 years then bought Andy’s Auction Mart. In those years Otto was blessed with his children: Keith, Louise, Deborah, Owen and the adoption of Brian Telke. He then moved to Brooks and opened Otto’s Furniture Village with his new family additions, wife, Anna and step-children: Brenda, Brian and Sherri Krause. After closing the store in 1989, Otto & Anna then opened Telke’s Mini Storage. Retirement brought them back to Medicine Hat and condo living until Otto’s passing.
Otto and Anna enjoyed a wonderful life of extensive world travels, a condo in Hawaii, and hosting big family Christmases. The grandchildren will cherish the tractor rides and hours spent playing their favorite card game, aptly named, ‘Grandpa’s game’.
Otto was deeply immersed in his life with the Lutheran Church and was a proud, long time member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League. He was also a long time member of Duchess Lutheran Church while living in Brooks and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church during his years in Medicine Hat. Otto loved to reminisce, and had a great memory for telling stories of the old days. He was liked by everyone who met him and he always had a kind word and a smile. He will be remembered for his love of the Lord, his life and his family.

EVA FEIFFER

November 2, 1923 August 18, 2016

Eva Feiffer returned to her heavenly home on August 18, 2016, at the age of 92. Born November 2, 1923, on the family farm southwest of Mendham, Saskatchewan to Clemens & Wilhelmina Stroh. Eva grew-up on a farm with 13 siblings. As a teenager and young adult she was always a hard worker, but her fondest memories were of playing ball. In her 20’s, she moved to Moose Jaw with her best friend and sister, Emma. That is where she met Victor and they later married on September 5, 1953. They moved to the family farm near Bayard where Thane, Selene, and Sonia were born. In 1973, they moved to Leader and in 1989, retired to Medicine Hat. Eva loved being a grandmother and her grandchildren were her pride and joy! She spent endless hours with them playing indoors and outdoors and loved them unconditionally. When the great-grandchildren came, she found room in her heart for them as well. She spent her last year in Valleyview Assisted Living and stayed active playing cards, exercising, baking and always taking the time to smile and hug the residents that were less fortunate than her. Eva will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of her children: Thane (Lynette) Feiffer, Selene Kiltau and Sonia (Mario) Biemans; grandchildren, Teana (Zane) Hayes, Vanessa (Derek) Price, Elissa Mudry (Brett Brochu), Travis (Becky) Feiffer, Shannon Kiltau, Nick (Jess) Feiffer, Matthew Biemans, Kyra Biemans, Taylor Johnson and Riley Feiffer; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Quinn and Kylie Price; Caden, Abrie and Cohen Hayes; Mason, Luke and Kate Feiffer; Decker Feiffer and Ryder Johnson. DOUGLAS MILLER

December 13, 1948 ~ August 22, 2016

Sadly, the Miller family announce the sudden passing of Douglas Miller on Monday, August 22, 2016, at the age of 67 years. Along with his loving wife, Judy, Doug’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of his daughter, Krista (Mark) Davies; two grandchildren, Zachary and Cameron Miller and their mother, Stephanie (Tyrel) Smith and their son, Dawson. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon (Richard) Ehry and their children, Jason, Chris and Raegan and their families as well as his mother-in-law, Joan Dolman, all of Medicine Hat. Doug also leaves behind many more relatives and very good friends. He was predeceased by his son, Sheldon (2009); parents, Mark (1989) and Tina (2007) as well as his father-in-law, Beevor Dolman (1995). Doug, A.K.A. “Tiger”, was well known in the community for his years of playing fastball with many record breaking achievements. He has since passed on his great love and knowledge of all sports to his children and grandchildren. With some of the highest marks in the Province, Doug breezed through his schooling on his way to achieving his journeyman’s certification as a Pipefitter. He worked at Western Co-op Fertilizer and Goodyear, finishing his career in January of 2008. Doug was a whiz with numbers and math, always teaching his kids and grandkids tricks with numbers, encouraging them to use their heads instead of their calculators. He loved sharing his knowledge with others and teaching about the use of “common sense” (CS). Doug and Judy were married in 1972 and enjoyed everything that life offered, especially children, camping, sports, travelling, family get togethers and the company of good friends. Doug was an advocate of being a good neighbour. In his tight knit community, he was always checking on houses, cutting grass, shovelling snow and looking after pets while his friends and neighbours were away. HENDERSON

Dr. Larry L. Henderson, beloved husband of Vera Lenore Henderson, passed away at the age of 86 years on Wednesday, August 24th 2016 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
He will be remembered, with love, by his son, Dr. Scott Henderson (Nadine Yeo), daughter Kim (Harvey) Bernbaum, and the apples of his eye, granddaughters Piper and Talia Bernbaum (Fiance Robert Birrell). He will also be deeply missed by his brothers Dub (Gwen), Al (Donna), Bob (Patty Johnson), Jerry (Theresa) and sister-in-law Vi Henderson, as well as honorary brother Dr. Ken (Valerie) Sauer. He also leaves behind a legion of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews whom he loved and thought were very, very special. He was always available to talk and lend advice about life, love and their personal pursuits.
Larry was predeceased by his grandson Matthew Henderson and daughter-in-law Patricia Henderson, as well as his sister Margaret and her husband Lyle Smith, brothers Ron and Ed, sister Vernette and her husband Les Allison and sister-in-law Lynne Henderson.
His chosen career was as an educator, ultimately achieving his Doctor of Education in 1985. Larry taught and administrated in schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta, spending the body of his career in Medicine Hat. In 1976, he was appointed the Principal of Southview Community School. With the assistance of his willing and supportive staff, Larry championed and executed the new community school concept at Southview and then later assisted in integrating the concept into schools in other districts.
Upon his retirement in 1993, Larry accepted a volunteer position to raise capital for enrichment activities that were not being funded by the Department of Education. This seemingly short-term task led to a very successful twenty-one year term as one of the directors of the Medicine Hat Public Schools’ Education Foundation. He also served on the Board of Directors for St. John Ambulance, was a long time volunteer for the many summer and winter games held here, and was a member of Toastmasters, the Medicine Hat Lions Club, and the Medicine Hat and District Retired Teachers Association.
Larry’s list of accomplishments and honours were many, but the highlights were the 2005 Alberta Centennial Medal, the 2009 Civic Recognition Award for Community Service, the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the 2015 Medicine Hat College Honorary Applied Baccalaureate Degree. He was so pleased to be recognized by a city and community that he loved and championed to everyone and anyone he met. Despite his life’s rich body of work Larry left us all too soon. He will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at Westminster United Church (101 6th St SE) on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Chelsea Masterman officiating. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Medicine Hat Public Schools’ Education Foundation (601 1st Ave SW, Medicine Hat, T1A 4Y7). Katherine (Kay) was born in Medicine Hat on March 17, 1918, the second of six children of John and Rosine Salberg. Kay married Clifford Solberg on October 17, 1936 and lived and farmed southeast of Bow Island until 1981 when Clifford retired from farming and they moved to Bow Island. After Clifford passed away in 2004, Kay continued to live in their home until 2010 when she moved into Pleasantview Lodge and later to the Long-term Care wing of the Bow Island Hospital. MOGCK

Emma Mogck of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the age of 96 years, beloved wife of the late Ralph Mogck. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Sheila (Ken) Greenstein, Donna (Gordon) Demke and Diane (David) Symington; six grandchildren, Doris (Doug) and their children Stefanie, Bradley (Courtney) and their daughter Delta; Michael (Karen) and their children Brayden and Caitlin; Tamra (Justin) and their children Ayden and Arie; Alysson; Jennifer (Jason) and their children Aura and Nikolai; and Christina; one brother Daniel Enslen, one sister Alice (Herb) Sackman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Maria and George Enslen, her husband Ralph on August 26, 1998; one granddaughter Rebecca; four brothers, Jack, John, William and Leo; three sisters, Anna Jauck, Leah Stringer and Tillie Anderst. Emma was born on January 17,1920 on the family homestead at Surprise Saskatchewan, the seventh of ten children to George and Maria Enslen who immigrated to Canada from Russia in the early 1900's. On the Enslen family farm, with ten children, there was lots of cooking, baking, washing, and ironing to be done. She helped with all these chores and her mother taught her to knit at an early age. By the time she was 16 she could bake bread on her own. She married Ralph Mogck on January 10,1941 and together they farmed and ranched in the Grayburn district south of Walsh. Emma worked tirelessly beside Ralph, milking cows, tending chickens and other farm chores but could also bake pies and kuchen with equal competence (and delightful consequences!). In 1971, Emma and Ralph semi-retired to Medicine Hat where Emma worked as a seamstress in a drapery shop and also as a sales clerk for Sears in their drapery department. Emma enjoyed various forms of sewing and quilting as a hobby. When her family was growing up she sewed many of their clothes and it was not unusual for the girls to be seen well turned out in matching dresses. There were graduation gowns and bridesmaid dresses made from her hand also. Emma and Ralph loved to travel, they had many adventures in far away places like Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, South America and closer to home; all the provinces and many states as well. Several of these trips were in support of Missions. She shared Ralph’s interest in politics and along with him was active in the Gideon’s International organization. Social activities were always centered around the church and family. She was an active and faithful member of Hillcrest church and more recently at South Country Village chapel where just last week she still managed to sing the hymns by memory albeit with a frail voice. Emma’s personality can be characterized by her strong faith, her perseverance through the challenges of life, and her focus on family. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 12 noon – 12:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held in Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Ave SE) on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. MOGCK

Emma Mogck of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the age of 96 years, beloved wife of the late Ralph Mogck. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Sheila (Ken) Greenstein, Donna (Gordon) Demke and Diane (David) Symington; six grandchildren, Doris (Doug) and their children Stefanie, Bradley (Courtney) and their daughter Delta; Michael (Karen) and their children Brayden and Kaitlin; Tamra (Justin) and their children Ayden and Arie; Alysson; Jennifer (Jason) and their children Aura and Nikolai; and Christina; one brother Daniel Enslen, one sister Alice (Herb) Sackmann as well as numerous nieces and nephews. MARY EVA LINK

1938 ~ 2016

Eva was predeceased by her loving husband Albert Link and is survived by her children Kelly Sharp, Rick (JoAnne) Link, David (Jackie) Link, and Michael (Gisele) Link; grandchildren Shane Sharp, Josh Link, Kelly (Colin Budda-Binder) Link, and Katie Link; as well as brothers Tommy Anderson and family, Danny (Carla) Anderson and family; and sister Bonnie (Butch) Insko and family.
Eva was born in 1938 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She grew up and attended public school there. She created strong and lasting friendships from her early years. Eva met Albert when she was 17 and was at his side helping him run the family construction business until his passing in 2008. Together, they travelled through Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC, building homes, apartments and other projects.
Eva was involved in many community organizations such as the Paw Society and the local soup kitchen. She was always there to lend a hand to any one in need. She was a proud member of the Christ Trinity Lutheran Church and could often be found helping out at all Church functions.

No matter what problem you came to her with, you went away feeling better about the situation. Things that made Eva smile were her love of music, dancing, reading and exercising.
