101 YEARS – MARY REBECCA McNEIL WANNER

Mary died on March 9th, 2020. Within mere days of leaving us, the COVID 19 Global Crisis hit Canada. In what we as a family view as a fascinating irony, it was 101 years ago that Mary arrived in this world at the peak of another global crises, the Spanish Flu. During this time of uncertainty, our family has decided to delay a gathering for the celebration of her life until her interment in Weyburn, SK later this year. In lieu of a funeral at this time, our family decided we would share this brief story of her life and importantly to thank the many people who showed wonderful kindness and friendship to Mary.

Mary’s life was filled with love, caring, hard work and frugality, all traits demanded by the challenges of the rural Canadian prairie in the early twentieth century. She was quiet and shy, very courteous (perhaps to a fault), but beneath this quiet external peaceful persona was a fierce independence. Mary always believed in learning, hard work, sharing and giving back to community. Family members cannot recall her ever speaking unkindly of others. Mary was born on November 20th, 1919 at home on the homestead farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan to her midwife mother, Ethel Symes, and her father, bank manager turned farmer, James McNeil. Both were staunch believers of the Presbyterian-United faith. Growing up, Mary, a dedicated student, would ride her pony to her one room schoolhouse and became an accomplished horsewoman. At the age of 16, she lost her father in the midst of extreme drought and the Great Depression. Her mother, uncle, little brother, and herself were left to manage the family farm during a difficult time. It was then, helping to keep the family farm going after her father’s death, that Mary came to understand and develop her belief that Canada and our world would only be strong when we cared for each other and shared our good fortune.

In 1940, Mary met and married Kasper Adam Wanner. At the beginning of WW II, national origin, religious difference and limited income were all very much a challenge that Mary and Kasper faced…but love prevailed. They moved on to her beloved Uncle Fred’s small farm near Weyburn, where sons “Jimmy” and “Bobbie” were born and raised. Mary and Kasper were very socially active contributing their time to school, community and church activities. Nodding to her independence, Mary became a Cub Scout leader during a time when women were not doing so. In 1970, Mary and Kasper retired from the farm and moved into Weyburn where they continued to be active volunteers in St. Vincent de Paul Parish as well as many Weyburn community events. In his later life Kasper developed dementia and so they relocated to Medicine Hat to be near Robert and Joan’s family. In 1993, Mary lost her love, Kasper. The quiet force that was Mary was determined to be independent so she got a bus pass, became friends with the drivers, and became a regular volunteer at the Medicine Hat Hospital and the Veiner Centre. In 2010, at the age of 91, Mary was recognized by the City of Medicine Hat with a ‘Golden Hero Award’ for what she called ‘…helping the old people…’

Over the years Mary developed a network of friends including Marilyn Heckbert, who became very close and Eva Lewis, who regularly visited for tea. At the South View Grand condominium, she had many close friends and neighbours including Brigitte Grimm and Irene Thearns.

In 2017, Mary moved to Valley View Age Care where she remained until her final days still being visited regularly by friends. Mary was incredibly grateful for the kindness of the caring staff, kind neighbours, and her dear friend and neighbour, Catherine Heines.

In addition to Kasper, her father James McNeil predeceased her in 1937; her mother, Ethel Symes in 1978; and her brother, Malcolm McNeil in 2012; as well as her numerous brother and sister-in-laws.

Mary leaves her two sons; James (Rita) and Robert (Bob) (Joan); four granddaughters, Shauna (Vincent Crowley) and their children, Maiah, Cian and Ella; Stephanie (Trent Bjorndahl) and children, Nathan and Joshua; Robyn (Shawn Lewis) and children, Xavier, Amelia and Mira; Nicoelle (Tyler Wiens) and children Zachary, Marinn and Gibson; grandson, Robert (Christine) Wanner and son Mathew; grandson, Denean Wanner; as well as sister-in-law, Janet McNeil; and numerous nephews and nieces.

For her 12 great grand children and numerous great grand nieces and nephews she leaves her endless love and a message of “…be happy, share and help others, and be the best that you can be…” and to the rest of us, especially during these uncertain times, Mary would ask that we always reach out to others. Prior to our current time of social distancing, Mary would most certainly have asked that you “…. invite someone over for tea and cookies”, but today she would have asked that you reach out to others with a phone call or a virtual hello. Please reach out to someone on behalf of Mary and say hello and be strong. He will be deeply missed and always remembered for his kind heart and zest for life. Due to world health crisis and restrictions on gatherings, the funeral and interment will be by invitation only. We look forward to hosting a Day of Celebration later this summer, as soon as much of the current crises has passed. 1925 ~ ANNA DIETRICH ~ 2020

Anna (Kuntz) Dietrich died peacefully at the age of 94 years on Easter Monday, April 13, 2020, at the Medicine Hat Hospital in Medicine Hat, Alberta, beloved wife of the late Steve Dietrich. She was born on December 4, 1925 at Allan, Saskatchewan.
She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Alice Dietrich; her brothers, Ted Kuntz, Tom (Danelle) Kuntz, Bill (Doreen) Kuntz and half-sister Vivian (Barry) Dooley; her daughter-in-law Delores (Wist) Dietrich; grandchildren, Kelly Dietrich, Steven (Cindy) Williams, Karla (Chad) Dietrich, Melissa (Peter) Heinisch, Kendra Dietrich, Christina Williams and Kerry (Russell) Dietrich; five great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and many close friends and extended family. She is predeceased by her parents, Frank and Eugenia Kuntz; her husband of 71 years, Steve Dietrich; her son Frank; her daughter Mary Williams and son-in-law Oliver Williams.
Anna was born to German settlers, Frank and Eugenia ‘Ida’ (nee Steckler) Kuntz in Allan, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Franks’ hometown, Richmound, SK by the time she was two years old. Her early years were spent working on the family farm, cooking, baking, and doing whatever chores were required. Anna went to school until Grade 8 at Haverhill School in Richmound, SK. She boarded with the Anton family in Fox Valley, SK until she completed Grade 11 and then went to the Normal School in Moose Jaw, SK to become a teacher in 1944. She started teaching in Port Reeve, SK for a short time to complete her training and was immediately posted at Keynote School, a one-room schoolhouse south of Mendham, SK, where she taught 17 students from grades 1 to 10. It was there that she met her husband Steve at a dance put on at the Dietrich farm close by and soon he asked her to marry him. In 1946 she quit teaching, was married and moved into the farmhouse on the Dietrich homestead.
Steve and Anna moved from the farm into Mendham in 1952, when Frank was ready to start school. They moved into town the way only resourceful farmers do – they dismantled the family farmstead and rebuilt the house in town re-using even the shingles on the roof. At that time they served as the town’s dairy. Steve and Anna would milk the cows and their children Mary and Alice would deliver the milk to the locals. This continued until about 1964 when pasteurization was required. Family was the most important priority to Steve and Anna who put off retiring fully until they watched their grandchild graduate high school at St. Angela’s Academy in Prelate, so they could remain close by until 1995 when they left Mendham and moved to Medicine Hat, AB.
When she wasn’t busy cooking, baking her signature bread or peanut butter cookies, helping on the farm in the red farm truck or on the combine, she loved to golf, curl, bowl, sing and play cards with family and friends. An impeccable cook, she could make anything from nothing – even making soup from burnt flour and water or from cooked tumbleweeds. She was known for her rice pudding with raisins and would can beef, chicken and prepare salt pork. She was an efficient and hard worker tending the garden and ensuring there was enough food canned, pickled or frozen to last the family through the winters.
A devout Catholic and volunteer, she served her communities of both Mendham, SK and Medicine Hat, AB with countless hours of community service. Anna was a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada for over 60 years. She started as one of the founding members of St. Anthony’s Parish in Mendham, SK. She held various positions on the local council and went on to serve at the Diocesan level in Saskatchewan. She continued with her service when they retired to Medicine Hat, both at Christ the King Parish and later at Holy Family Parish. Anna leaves behind a legacy of endurance, resilience, grace, humility, love and strength. As one person noted after leaving a visit with her and Steve, “They are pure love.” She will be deeply missed.
Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. A private family funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) with Father Iqbal Khurshid, Celebrant and interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Those who wish to remember Anna with a donation may do so to the charity of your choice. 1928 ~ ITALO DAL MOLIN ~ 2020

Italo Dal Molin passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the age of 91 years, beloved husband of Piera Dal Molin of 60 years. He also leaves to cherish his memory his three children, David (Lisa) Dal Molin and Linda (Colin) Kryski all of Calgary and Randy (Caroline) Dal Molin of Parkland, Florida; four grandchildren, Evan Kryski, Emily Kryski, Isabella Dal Molin and Sophia Dal Molin; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Italo (Rose) Pisoni and Maria Rosa Pisoni; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Luigi and Fortunata Dal Molin; two brothers, Lino (Teresa) Dal Molin and Aldo Dal Molin; one brother-in-law Luciano Pisoni. Italo was born on May 15th, 1928 in Medicine Hat but grew up in Italy on a farm where his love of gardening started. Italo immigrated to Canada when he was 22 and married his wife Piera in 1960. He began working at the Alberta Clay Products and then the Brick and Tile. Most of his working career was with the City of Medicine Hat in the Parks Department, where he could be seen tending to our beautiful parks. When he was not pruning trees 60 feet in the air, during spring and fall, he was looking after the outdoor skating rinks during the cold winters, building new parks and maintaining others during the summers. Italo enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, playing bocce ball – especially with his brothers and sons, and was an accomplished wine maker. He will be deeply missed and always remembered for his kind heart and zest for life. Due to world health crisis and restrictions on gatherings, the funeral and interment will be by invitation only. We look forward to hosting a Day of Celebration later this summer, as soon as much of the current crises has passed. Those who wish to remember Italo with a donation, may do so to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Leonard William Brace, beloved husband of Rita Brace, passed away at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB on Monday, April 13, 2020, at the age of 69 years. Along with Rita, his devoted wife of 47 years, Leonard leaves to cherish his memory three children, Tracy (John) Nelson, and their children, Taylor (Mitch), Zane (Miranda) and Bennett, Emma (James); Tamara (Dustin) Jones, and their children, Hunter, Chase, Ryeanna and Gage; and Denise (Mike) Vossler and Hayley. He also leaves to cherish his sisters; Lori (Chris), Joyce (Bronco), his brother; Randy (Sharon); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Louis Brace; mother, Ella Stolz; and his stepfather, Walter Stolz; sister, Helen Castets; and his brother, Gordon Brace. Leonard was born on September 26, 1950 in Empress, AB, and grew up in Bindloss, Alberta. He married the love of his life Rita, in Williams Lake, BC, on August 31, 1973 and together they raised their girls in Bindloss. Leonard had various jobs and then worked as a gas plant operator for many years until his heart attacks in 1998. They moved to Medicine Hat in June, 2001 and then on June 21, 2002 he was granted the gift of life by an anonymous heart donor. Dad always said the donor must have been a woman because he would cry at the drop of a hat. Leonard and Rita were then able to enjoy his remaining years visiting and having coffee with friends, family and neighbors. They loved their visits with their grandchildren and attending their many events. He was given an additional 18 years and we feel very blessed to have shared with him so many wonderful memories. He was a jokester and had a sense of humor like no other, even when he was in the hospital. We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, father, father-in-law and grandpa. We will treasure him always until we meet again. A very special thank you to Unit 81 doctors and nurses, the staff at the Cardiac Transplant Clinic at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, and the doctors and nurses at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Your care and compassion that you gave to Leonard will forever be appreciated and remembered.

To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: pattfh@telusplanet.net subject heading: Anna Dietrich, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

JOHN KOSIK

July 4, 1930 ~ April 22, 2020

John Kosik, beloved husband of the late Alice Kosik, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at the age of 89 years. John was born July 4, 1930, in Abbey, Saskatchewan to Kalistrat and Kataryna Kosik. At the early age of 6, John contracted whooping cough and from that time on he suffered with chronic bronchitis and was never without a handkerchief, but it never stopped him from doing things. As a result of this, he had part of his lung removed in 1962. In spite of all of this, he participated in many sports and enjoyed the outdoors. The family moved to Medicine Hat when John was 10 years old. After high school, John went to work on the CPR for 11 years as a steam locomotive fireman. When the railway moved from steam engines to diesel his job ceased. He then went to work for the Royal Bank of Canada in Medicine Hat for 11 years. After that time, he decided to change careers and moved to real estate for 20 years before retiring. He was honoured to have assisted so many people in the Medicine Hat area to sell or purchase their homes. John loved golf! Over the course of his playing time, John was instrumental in helping to start the Police Point Golf League along with various tournaments. What John really enjoyed the most, was camping and fishing with Alice, son, Kim and friends. John learned his fly tying skills from Walter Lawson and the two of them subsequently taught the art and science of fly tying to many others. He loved sharing this passion and seeing the excitement of a student tying their first successful fly. John was also fortunate to have had many years of salmon fishing with his brother, Harry on Vancouver Island; he loved taking his salmon home and sharing them with his friends. John and Alice loved to gather with family and friends whether it was simply for a game of cards, a great meal together or out at a campsite…. and did they ever enjoy their cards! The games would go on for hours with much laughter and fun. John had great pride in his yard and put a lot of love in tending to the flowers and shrubs in it. Everyone admired all the different varieties of flowers he grew in his backyard and he was a great source of inspiration to other gardeners. He was so looking forward to the coming spring and seeing the tulips and daffodils popping out of the ground. John will be deeply missed by his many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice and his son, Kim along with his mother, father and brother, Harry. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Medicine Hat Health system along with the care providers who assisted John in his last days. We would also like to express our gratitude to John’s dear neighbours and friends who took such good care of him. John’s life will be silently remembered without the proceedings of a formal funeral service. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouth land.com) For those wishing to make a memorial donation in John’s name during this Covid-19 pandemic, the family would like to encourage everyone to give to a charity of their choice that affects those living in Medicine Hat.

John loved his city. Honoured to serve the family is

She was a very dedicated and passionate woman throughout her life, especially in the areas of health and education to the community. Margaret was a very active reader and lifelong learner. She and her husband owned hundreds and hundreds of books in their own private library which she absolutely loved. She truly enjoyed sitting down for a visit and having a good intellectual conversation. Margaret was a phenomenal baker and had a green thumb which resulted in bountiful vegetable and flower gardens. She was very dedicated to the support of children’s charities. The three that were very important to her and will be Margaret’s lasting legacy are Leprosy Mission Canada, Operation Eyesight Canada and Operation Smile Canada Foundation. Margaret will be so very much missed by all those who knew her. She had a very kind soul and an absolutely infectious giggle. She touched so many hearts without even knowing it. William (Bill) Anhorn was a well-known Kamloops businessman for over three decades. He was perhaps best known for his work as the founding director of KEDCo (Kamloops Economic Development Corp.) and a founding member of the Norkam Seniors Housing Cooperative, resulting in the construction of Cottonwood Manor. Bill was a member of the Kamloops North Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge, and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.
He was born and raised in Medicine Hat, AB, and met his wife Phyllis there as his last-minute high school grad date. They and their children moved to Kamloops from Sudbury, ON, in 1968, after his career with Swift Canadian Company Ltd. took the family to various provinces. The family was eager to return to their western Canadian roots.
Bill and Phyl loved to travel, especially in their camper van. He was very proud of his “Germans from Russia” heritage, and self-published a book about his family’s history.

Joanne Elaine McNeil (Lassesen) beloved wife of Marvin for 46 years, passed away peacefully at home in Sylvan Lake, Friday April 24, 2020. She will be forever missed by her family and friends. She is also survived by her children Ryan (Christina) McNeil and Stacey (Collin) Pacholek; 8 granddaughters Isabel, Bailey, Mackenzie, Savannah McNeil; Jasmine McDonald; Dana, Natalie, Lauren Pacholek; and 1 great grandson Sterling Hattersley. Her sisters Phyllis (Clarence) Ernst and Margaret (Lorimer) Olson; Sister in-laws Sharon (John Hill) Hallett, Lois (Don) Holloway and Bernice Lassesen; Cousin Eleanor (Clarence) Schroder; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Palmer and Irene Lassesen, and brother James Lassesen.
Joanne was born on March 7, 1944 in Medicine Hat, AB when her dad was stationed at CFB Suffield during WWII, and was raised in Buck Lake, Gladstone, Bawlf and Camrose. At the age of 3 she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which although physically challenging, did little to alter her determination to live life her way, defying all preconceived notions from experts. She worked at Bethany in Camrose for 8 years before meeting the love of her life and getting married on November 16, 1973. She loved travelling with her husband on the pipelines, finally settling in Redcliff to raise her family. Joanne and Marvin finally retired to the place they always summered, Sylvan Lake, in the fall of 2019.
Joanne loved life, loved family, loved dancing, and all the fruits of indulgence. She adored her herd of sweet peas, who where a constant source of joy and laughter, and she was so proud of each and every one of them. Joanne will always be remembered for her incredible Viking like stubbornness; but even more so for her generous, loving and welcoming spirit. All who met her called her mom, friend, or grandma (nana).
At this time due to current circumstances, no service will be held until restrictions are lifted. In lieu of donations to charity, Joanne would have appreciated flowers
