Together they farmed south of Walsh until 1956, when they moved and farmed at the Bull Trail, south of Irvine. In 1985, they retired to Medicine Hat. Upon retiring, Bernice and Walter enjoyed family time, camping and traveling. After Walter’s passing she and her lady friends spent many hours visiting and playing cards, going for drives in the country and just enjoying life. Thank you to these special ladies! You know who you are. Bernice enjoyed cooking for her family, using a little of this and some of that method. We’ve learned a lot but most of us still need a cookbook. She was a member of the New Horizon Club in Irvine. Age slowed her mobility but she always had a sharp mind. She could remember dates and events far better than most of us. ALBERTA AUGUSTA “BERTA” WOOLFREY

Berta Woolfrey passed away on August 31, 2017 at the age of 97. She was born in Bingville, AB, on August 5, 1920, one of eight children of Danish Immigrants, Laura and Hans Hansen. She attended school in Medicine Hat where she met Bill Woolfrey. They married on June 8, 1940, the same day that Bill joined the Army. When Bill was posted overseas, Berta went to live with Bill’s parents and helped run the family dairy farm – milking cows and delivering milk to customers. Bill returned after the war, and the couple had two sons, Ted (1941) and Dick (1946), and they continued to run the Dairy Farm until the late 1970's and in 1990 they sold the land to Ted and his partners to develop Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course. Berta was a hardworking and resourceful person. In addition to farm chores, she was a seamstress, dog groomer and general "handywoman" who was not afraid to tackle any project. "Waste not, want not" was one of her favorite expressions but Berta also liked to have fun. She had a flare for fashion, was always well-dressed with her hair done and ready to enjoy a good party. She and Bill travelled extensively and in retirement enjoyed taking their RV to Puerta Penasco, Mexico for the winter months. At age 70, Berta took up golf, made new friends and took golf trips to Thailand and Portugal. In her later years, she took great joy in being able to spend time helping to raise her great grandchildren, and she and Morgan developed a very close bond.
Berta is lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Marion; granddaughters, Cathy (Craig Wood) and Carole (Joe Harris); great grandchildren, Will Wood, Morgan Wood (Cole Lane) and BJ Wisnowski (Megan); and great great granddaughters, Olivia and Charley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Berta was predeceased by her husband, Bill (1999); her sons, Ted (2013) and Dick (2005); as well as her parents, Laura and Hans; and her siblings, Marion Thomas, Edith Bastien, Eleanora Munro, Chris Hansen, Einer Hansen, Otto Hansen and Russell Hansen.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Sunnyview who took great care of Berta for the past three and a half years.

Hans and Bert lived their last years at the Haven Care Centre. Her door was always open, and Hans become close to the care team. The family is so grateful to Helen Santer (RN), the staff at Haven Care Center, Dr Monty, and the Nurses and Doctors at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, who treated mom with kindness these last six weeks. WILLIAM "BILL" HORACE GILCHRIST

1922 – 2017

William “Bill” Horace Gilchrist of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully in Palliative Care at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 at the age of 95. He was the beloved husband of the late Carrie Gilchrist. Bill was born on May 21st, 1922 in Coldwater, Ontario to Roland and Ellen Gilchrist. He grew up on the Shepherd farm where his father was employed, with his one brother and two sisters. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and he earned his 3rd year, Motor Vehicle Repair in 1946. Bill’s passion for airplanes took him to many places including Sardinia, Gander, Newfoundland and Bournemouth, England. He remained a career military man as a Civil Servant for the Armed Forces stationed in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Bill met and later married his “lovely wife” on September 15th, 1979, and together they resided in Portage until his retirement in 1987. Upon his retirement, they moved to Medicine Hat in 1988 to be closer to family. Bill enjoyed being an active member of the Medicine Hat Church of God (Pentecostal), camping, tinkering with small engines, learning to use a computer to research subjects of interest, walking his dog and watching his grandchildren, and later, his great- granddaughters grow up.
Bill was a quiet, meticulous, steadfast man who could figure out any problem given enough time. Once he set his mind to something he didn't quit until he fully understood all of the working parts. Bill was also very generous, and would extend a leg up to anyone in need.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his step-children, Rhonda (Darryl) Shoemaker and T. Lindsey (Sharon) Reid; his grandchildren, Marissa (Derrick) Jordan, Gordon (special friend Jenn) Shoemaker, Claudene (Dan) Watt, and Trevor (Laura) Baker; and great-granddaughters, Marlee and Lara Jordan and Khloe Baker; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Carrie (2016); step son, Ron Reid (2009); granddaughter, Cynthia Baker (1990); as well as his parents, Roland and Ellen; and siblings, Fred, Aida and Grace.
The Family wishes to extend special thanks to the wonderful staff on the Palliative Care Unit and all of the nursing staff who looked after Bill over the past few years. ZIEGENHAGEL

October 12, 1937 –
September 14, 2017
Adeline Ziegenhagel, beloved wife of Arthur Ziegenhagel, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2017, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband Art, and her sister, Louise (Ewald) Reisdorf. She is also cherished and missed by her three children; Larry (Bernie) Ziegenhagel and their children, Nathan and Kirsten (Shaun) Lal; Patty (Ryan) Renke and their children, Dayton (Whitney), Tanner (Jenny), and Danica; and Mark Ziegenhagel. Adeline married Art in 1957 and together they farmed in the Robinson District north of Elkwater. She loved the farm and her favourite activity there was gardening. This carried over to their house in town when they moved into Medicine Hat. She was a humble and kind person and her kids and grandkids were number one. No one was able to leave her house without some kind of care package. Grammy was a classic German cook and made the best homemade dishes and baking, which she was generous in sharing with her family. Adeline had a strong sense of faith that she carried with her, and you could always count on her for words of wisdom in times of need. We look forward to seeing her again one day. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mark Bolender officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. As a young man, he fell in love with Mary. She was wearing yellow. They married and lived in Medicine Hat where he had a long career. He and Mary moved to Vancouver Island in retirement.
David was a passionate dabbler, handyman and kind, creative soul. He was as willing to tackle a plumbing problem as a Bonzai arrangement; repair a garbage disposal as try his hand at an oil painting.
He was particular about ketchup, white bread, and potato chips. He was less particular about the tools that found refuge in his garage. His most rusted, least used tools won favoured and it seems permanent placement at the top of some particular pile or other. A prized spot, second only to the bottom of the same pile.
David found comfort and escape in being busy. He kept a long to-do list populated by the women of his life: his wife, Mary; his sister-in-law, Merle and his life-long friend, Patricia. He only half-jokingly referred to them collectively as ‘they who must be obeyed’.
David leaves a legacy in faith as a once active member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Medicine Hat and later, in the inception of the Light of Christ Anglican Church in Nanaimo. He embraced his community through his faith where he made his closest friends and nurtured a second family.
He is survived — and dearly missed — by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Auralyn; his Son, Steven (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Nayla, Patience, and Brooklynn; his brothers Don and Dale; his many nieces and nephews; and a host of others that called him friend.
A memorial will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2:00pm at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Medicine Hat – 635 4th Street SE.
Though he passed by the sea, his heart was in the prairies.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Light of Christ Church in Nanaimo, BC (http://www.lightofchristnanaimo.org) or the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Palliative Care Unit (identify the unit when donating to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation: https:// http://www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com).
