ALOYSIUS 'AL' DIRK

June 3, 1932 ~ June 21, 2016

Understanding of Al’s decision to let his chronic illness follow through to its conclusion, and with gratitude, the family of Aloysius “Al” Barnabas Charles Dirk announce his passing at the St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at the age of 84 years. Like so many Medicine Hatter’s, Al was born in Saskatchewan on June 3, 1932, at Prelate to be exact, to John and Ermelia “Erma” (nee Volk). Though moving with his family to various small towns in that province as well as a staying a short time in Kelowna, British Columbia, Al eventually came to call Medicine Hat in South Eastern Alberta his hometown. Sixth of eight siblings, Al was born after five sisters: Mary (Frank) Rissling, Katherine “Kay” (Frank) Tarnoczi, Anne (Jack) Marshall, Rose (Arnie) Hall and Theresa “Terry” (Mike) Wickenheiser. Even so, they all came to look up to him as their big brother with his well loved sister, Kay continuing to hold him in that regard. Lorraine (Cameron “Cob”) Bliss, his one younger sister, predeceased him. Jerome (Dianne) Dirk, his only and younger brother, also survives him. Having so many sisters and brothers who married and started their own families meant Al also became an uncle to a plethora of nieces and nephews; many, we daresay, coming to regard him as their favourite. Al met Jeanne (nee Svihura) and they were married on May 3, 1958, thus celebrating their fifty-eighth Anniversary together. In addition to all those wonderful years, their marriage meant Al gained a brother-in-law, Ed Svihura, and a sister-in-law Mary Ann ”Merc” (Peter) Weigel, the latter becoming especially cherished, owing to her evolving friendship and assistance as his health declined. Al not only had a partner for life in Jeanne, but with such a large number of relations, all of whom loved to play cards, ready competitors for a pastime he loved most dearly. Foursomes met at one another's houses nearly every weekend to enjoy all sorts of games. However, Al came to enjoy Bridge the most, finding all aspects stimulating though relishing even more the camaraderie. He especially enjoyed annual New Year's Eve tournaments, begrudgingly interrupted at midnight for a short celebration and then eagerly resumed until the wee hours of the morning. Al and Jeanne were also blessed to become parents to five children: Marcel (Andrea) Dirk, Douglas “Doug” (Bonnie) Dirk, Roger (Carol) Dirk, Kathleen “Kathy” Dirk, and Lynnette (Bruce Downie) Dirk. To all of them, he was a wonderful father and father-in-law, earning their respect for instilling and demonstrating strong, liberal values; allowing their own choices in life and accepting them, and more than anything else, possessing and passing on a wide ranging sense of humour, whether it be delivering jokes or unleashing good natured joshings. Al and Jeanne also became grandparents to two grandchildren; Emmalee Dirk and Pierson Dirk. For the former, grandpa extended his lunch hour or shortened his work day on Mondays and Fridays to babysit her along with Jeanne. For the latter, Papa Al crafted rocking horses and other toys as well as providing woodworking tools to encourage a young fellow's hammering, nailing, screwing and sawing. Largely on account of his approval of providing opportunities and experiences for his own children, Al always volunteered to instruct and encourage many others. Perhaps the highlight was his leading involvement in the Cub car races. Not only did he assist young builders to craft cars out of blocks of wood but he also constructed the track they raced on and officiated, with the help of his wife and daughters, the annual rally. Though he never sought any sort of credit for efforts, he undoubtedly deserved some for the inspiration and joy provided over the years to all those youngsters. Al also was a volunteer at St. Mary's Catholic Church, singing in the choir and serving on its Building Committee, and with the Knights of Columbus, assisting at Bingo’s and penny carnivals. In his later years, he undertook delivering Meals On Wheels, a volunteer activity combined with his enjoyment of driving. Habitat for Humanity also benefited from his willingness to help as he employed his carpentry skills to contribute to more than one of their projects. Those self-acquired skills as an exceptional finishing carpenter were the hallmarks of his working life. Starting in the trade before there was any notion of pre-fabs, he was an expert cabinet maker. Very few could eye a four-by-eight sheet and without measuring twice, but only cutting once turn it into the necessary components for a set of kitchen cupboards or a bathroom vanity. Many of Medicine Hat homes likely still contain Al Dirk’s handiwork as it was built to last. Al also was an exceptionally quick worker. Without braggadocio, he could complete a house's interior long before his contemporaries. That work ethic led many construction firms and homebuilders to seek him out as their finish carpenter of choice, not just for the houses they were building for the market but also as their dream homes. The appreciation from them for a job well done meant a lot to Al; the friendships established with folks who wanted him for their projects meant even more. Though he often complained about the aches and pains created by a career in sawdust and bemoaned how much he detested renovations, he always said putting in the smallest upgrade would inevitably lead to a complete makeover. When he finished any job, he was truly proud of the great work he had done. Indeed, in his retirement, though he thought he was done with his tools, he could not stop using the band saw and sander in his garage, making those wooden toys and now puzzles for his own grandchildren and many others for relatives and friends children with the same attention to detail. This summation of his life's activities would likely leave Al uncomfortable for he always thought of himself as just an average guy. However, we, the surviving wife, sons, and daughters of Al Dirk, want to leave this short, written record of the truly wonderful accomplishments of a big brother, devoted husband, wonderful father and grandfather, unselfish volunteer and hardworking man. Let history recognize more of his sort. Vigil Prayers will be recited at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat on Friday, June 24, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Father Albert Sayson celebrant. The interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery. Those who wish to remember Al may do so through a donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 – 1A Street S.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2H 0G5. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) Honoured to serve the family is

Mary's Catholic Church, singing in the choir and serving on its Building Committee, and for the Knights of Columbus, assisting at bingos and penny carnivals. In his later years, he undertook delivering Meals On Wheels, a volunteer activity combined with his enjoyment of driving. Habitat for Humanity also benefited from his willingness to help as he employed his carpentry skills to contribute to more than one of their projects. Those self-acquired skills as an exceptional finish carpenter were the hallmarks of his working life. Starting in the trade before there was any notion of pre-fabs, he was an expert cabinet maker. Very few could eye a four-by-eight sheet and without measuring twice, but only cutting once turn it into the necessary components for a set of kitchen cupboards or a bathroom vanity. Many of Medicine Hat homes likely still contain Al Dirk handiwork as it was built to last. Though he often complained about the aches and pains created by a career in sawdust and bemoaned how much he detested renovations—he always said putting in the smallest upgrade would inevitably lead to a complete makeover—when he finished any job, he was truly proud of the great work he had done. Indeed, in his retirement, though he thought he was done with his tools, he could not stop using the band saw and sander in his garage, making those wooden toys and now puzzles for his own grandchildren and many others for relatives' and friends' children with the same attention to detail. This summation of his life's activities would likely leave Al uncomfortable for he always thought of himself as just an average guy. However, we, the surviving wife, sons, and daughters of Al Dirk want to leave this short, written record of the truly wonderful accomplishments of a big brother, devoted husband, wonderful father and grandfather, unselfish volunteer, and hardworking man. Let history recognize more of his sort. Those who wish to remember Al may do so through a donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 – 1A Street S.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2H 0G5. 1941 ~ JANZEN ~ 2016

Evelyn Janzen (nee Paproski) of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Norman Janzen, passed away Sunday, June 26th, 2016.
Evelyn was born in Sinnett, SK to Charlie and Eileen Paproski and grew up on the family farm with her five sisters and two brothers. Evelyn was teaching in Estevan when she met Norman Janzen and together they raised four children and moved to many places over the years in both Alberta and British Columbia, making many special friends along the way.
Mom always took great pride in the excellent care she took of her family. We always knew our Mom loved us dearly and she was never happier than when she was able to cuddle and spoil her seven grandchildren.
The last few years were difficult for everyone but we were still able to make memories while spending time with our Mom. When the great-grandchildren came along, her love of babies always brought a big smile to her face and a twinkle in her eye.
We will miss our Mom with all our hearts but we know that she is happy in Dad’s arms and they are watching over us together.
Evelyn is survived by her children: Laurinda (Wayne) Resch, Darin (MaryAnn) Janzen, and Karla (Cory) Oliphant all of Medicine Hat, and Jodi (Jim) Charley of Okanagan Falls, BC; her grandchildren: Ryan (Mellissa) Resch with Carson and Corbin of Blackfalds, AB; Kirsten (David) Green with Evan and Kade; Courtney (Jared) Heilman and Harper; Stephanie (Travis) Greenwald and Miles, all of Medicine Hat; Taylor Charley (Ryan) of Penticton, BC; and Payton Charley (Nick) of Kelowna, BC.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Norman; parents, Charlie and Eileen; and her beautiful grandson, Kyle Janzen.
The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Sunday, July 3rd, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. with Gary W. Goran officiating. Interment will follow at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery for both Evelyn and Norman.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Care Center for the kindness and respect shown to both our Mom and our family. Annette Helen Lien has gone to be with Jesus, passing peacefully on June 25, 2016, at the age of 81 years, She was predeceased by her husband Dennis and leaves to cherish her memory their children, Rod (Barb Hunt), Brad (Lois), Chris, Kent (LeAnne); seven grandchildren, Chelsey (Jase) Cowan, Jordan Lien, Erin (Jesse) Wuitchik, Zach Lien, Erik, Brynn and Morgan Lien ; two sisters Mary Lou Hille and Kathi Zeller (Gilbert Lunseth) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her parents Elaine and Albert Zeller; her brothers, Bill, Jim and Boyd and by two sisters Lee and Joyce.
Annette was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan on December 6, 1934. She was raised in Hazlet, Saskatchewan where she also did all of her schooling. She met the love of her life Dennis at Hazlet High School and fondly remembered her “courting” days with him. They were married December15, 1954 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. They farmed together north of Hazlet where they had all 4 boys. After selling the family farm, they moved to Swift Current, where they resided until 1970, when they relocated the family to Medicine Hat. Her focus was raising her boys in addition to a number of jobs outside her home including the family mobile catering business, retail jobs as well as being a nanny to three fortunate families. Annette also attended Medicine Hat College for a semester in 1985 and was very proud to share a locker with her son Brad. She was very involved in many ministries in her church such as teaching Sunday School, greeting, kitchen work, and choirs. A highlight of her life was a trip to Hawaii with Dennis.
Their retirement together was short-lived with Dennis’s sudden passing in 1999. Shortly thereafter Annette chose to relocate to Chinook Village where she resided for 15 years. While there, she made many friends and was most noted for leading sing-along and singing in cantatas. Annette loved music and especially Country and Southern Gospel, attending Jamborees and watching Gaither videos. She was an avid reader and loved crosswords and word searches.
For many years at Christmas she greeted people while ringing bells for the Salvation Army. Annette loved to visit with anyone, anywhere, anytime. She formed friendships with waiters, waitresses, clerks and countless others throughout the city.
Family gatherings were highlights with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Annette was always available to visit except during the Brier, the Scotties or when her beloved Riders were playing…
She was generous with her time and resources and loved to share with people of all ages. She will be missed by her family and friends who rest in the knowledge that she is rejoicing with Jesus.
Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday evening from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Ave SE) on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Lance Duncalfe officiating. MARTY R. HOFER

June 16, 1956 ~ June 27, 2016
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marty Hofer at the age of 60 years, loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. Marty was born in 1956 at the Lakeside Colony at Cranford, AB., and moved that same year to the Spring Creek Colony at Walsh, AB. In 1979, he moved to the Elkwater Colony where he resided until his passing. Marty is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Ruth Hofer; son, Randy (Rachel Ann) of Elkwater as well as a daughter, Wanda (Michael) of Mixburn. He was blessed with 8 grandchildren who meant the world to him, Abraham, Boaz, Javan, Alexander, Paula, Mylan, Tamar and Noella. He is also survived by his sister, Susanna (Fred) of Gildford, MT; brothers, Paul (Susanna), Ben (Annie), John (Rebecca), Willy (Mary) and Joe, all of Elkwater. Marty was predeceased by his father, Paul and mother, Susanna as well as one sister, Maria. After being the plumber and welder for 15 years, Marty became the farm welder full time and enjoyed his welding trade for many years. Marty’s family, the Elkwater Colony and all who knew him will so dearly miss this loving man. With his humble heart of gold he always had something encouraging and positive to say to whoever he met, always giving and not expecting anything in return. After numerous painful back surgeries, it was still so hard for him to slow down. Even when he was the one hurting, he loved making people laugh. But the Lord wanted him now, and we will find comfort in Jesus. We are reminded in Isaiah 55:9, For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. The Funeral for Marty will be held at the Elkwater Colony on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. with lunch to follow. MARTY R.

MARTY R.

1928 ~ GARDINER ~ 2016

With sincere gratitude for his well lived, 88-year life, we salute the family pride and commitment Grant Rowbotham Gardiner shared with us all. Along with Barb, his amazing wife and steady ally of 44 years, they built an impressive foundation of strength, integrity and connection for their immediate family:
Gary (kids Greg, Shannon), Catherine (kids Robbie, Jordyn, Andrea), Bruce (Michele; kids Brooke, Drew), Debbie (Albert; kids Carlye (Wacey), Jay, Blake), Bob (Kandi; kids Jenn, TJ (CJ) with great grandsons Wyatt, Grayson), Susan (Mike; kids Connor, Colby, Grant), and Lori (Harlan; kids Sydni, Caiden).
Grant was predeceased by his wife, Barb (2014) as well as his infant granddaughter, Erin Gardiner; great nephew, Will Bouchard; and first wife, Marilyn Gray.
The eldest son of Robert (aka Dick) Gardiner and Hester Sproule, Grant was brother to Helen and Bill (Judy) and self-appointed foreman to his younger cousins in the very tight, fun-loving Sproule family. Grant embraced in-laws Ed and Ev Deering (now deceased), sister-in-law Marlene Ruff (Vern) and family, and the Grays.
The practical perfectionist (!) and talented carpenter, Grant mastered the mix of hard work, good cooking, legendary turkey dinners, the ‘just right’ cocktail, and fun. Grant treasured the places in his life that brought his favourite people together: his home in Medicine Hat, the Gull Lake cabin, Elkwater campgrounds, Estuary and The Farm in Bashaw.
Still top of Grant’s list was the broad circle of valued friends he enjoyed and traveled with through business (Ogilvies, Engineered Homes, Gardiner Agencies, MH Real Estate Board, CREA), community (Kinsmen, K-40s, Masons, Shriners, Shrine Band, Jesters, etc.), goose hunting, as well as the extended families and friends of pretty much everyone he knew. Great meals, hearty laughs, Sargent’s orders and well- defended stories were just the norm.
With his characteristic strength and still not a hair out of place, Dad passed away June 30, surrounded by the same unconditional love he so easily gave to us. In celebration of the end of this revered era, we toast the man we proudly called Dad, grandpa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. He was a helluva guy!

This is where he grew up, graduating from Monsignor McCoy High School in 2002, later attending Medicine Hat College. Neil worked for a number of years with DRC Construction where he truly valued the support and guidance of his employer. Most recently he was employed with the City of Medicine Hat.

Grant was predeceased by his wife, Barb (2014) as well as his infant granddaughter, Erin Gardiner; great nephew, Will Bouchard; and first wife, Marilyn (nee Gray).
The eldest son of Robert (aka Dick) Gardiner and Hester Sproule, Grant was brother to Helen and Bill (Judy) and self-appointed foreman to his younger cousins in the very tight, fun-loving Sproule family. Grant embraced in-laws Ed and Ev Deering (now deceased), sister-in-law Marlene (Vern) Ruff and family, and the Grays.
The practical perfectionist (!) and talented carpenter, Grant mastered the mix of hard work, good cooking, legendary turkey dinners, the ‘just right’ cocktail, and fun. Grant treasured the places in his life that brought his favourite people together: his home in Medicine Hat, the Gull Lake cabin, Elkwater campgrounds, Estuary Hunting Lodge and The Farm in Bashaw.
Still top of Grant’s list was the broad circle of valued friends he enjoyed and travelled with through business (Ogilvies, Engineered Homes, Gardiner Agencies, MH Real Estate Board, CREA), community (Kinsmen, K-40s, Masons, Shriners, Shrine Band, Jesters, etc.), goose hunting, as well as the extended families and friends of pretty much everyone he knew.
The Funeral Service will be held at FIFTH AVENUE MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH, 476 – 4 Street SE, on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Dave Pollard officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Grant’s memory may be made to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, 666 – 5 Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6, or to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children – Canada, 1003 Decarie Boulevard, Montreal, Quebec, H4A 0A9. He is predeceased by his parents, Ida and James; his brother, Barclay; and his beloved wife of 47 years, Marilyn (neé Reesor).
Stuart was born March 1, 1932, in Calgary, Alberta, the son of a Canadian Pacific Railroad superintendent and roadmaster. His family eventually moved to Medicine Hat, and after attending Medicine Hat High School, Stuart hired on with CP as a steam locomotive fireman. Stuart loved steam engines, and often said being a fireman was the best job he ever had. When diesel replaced steam engines, he went to work at the Medicine Hat power plant. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Reesor, on September 5, 1953. Together they raised their four daughters, and Stuart always enjoyed taking them swimming, skating, camping and fishing.
He eventually changed careers and began working at the Medicine Hat News in 1970, where he ultimately became sales manager, retiring in 1992 after 22 years of service. He enjoyed his retirement years, relaxing at home and travelling with Marilyn, fishing, hunting and riding his horse, Skeeter, and making wine with his friend, George Wilcox. Before and after retirement, Stuart contributed to the community, notably as a member of the boards of the Cypress Club (where he served as President), the Alberta Motor Association and the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede.
Always adventurous, in 2002, at the age of 69, after Marilyn’s death, he went to New Zealand for three months, working as a farmhand on two cattle, sheep and deer stations, where he rounded up livestock from mountain tops, sheered sheep, and generally took part in every aspect of New Zealand country life. Just after his 70th birthday, while touring the country on his own, he went bungee jumping, rode a jet boat and went sky-diving, all in one day. Not long after returning from this trip, he met Doris, and they became close companions. On one of their trips to Cuba, for his 75th birthday he went swimming with dolphins, one of whom took him on a ride across the lagoon. Stu kept his composure and said that riding a dolphin was almost as fun as riding Skeeter.
Although he had slowed down in later years, Stu was still active, going to his “cowboy breakfasts” every Saturday morning, his Wednesday lunches with friends and out for dinner with Doris on a regular basis.

1932 ~ WARNE ~ 2016

Stuart Murray Warne died peacefully in his sleep at home on July 2, 2016, at 84 years of age. He is survived by his daughters Janis, Shirley, Patricia, and Carolyn; brothers Donald, Reginald (Sharon and family), Douglas (Marilyn and family); sisters Margaret Kuhl and family, Arlene Barker (Murray and family); sister-in-law, Laura and family; and his partner of 11 years, Doris Smethhurst.
His family eventually moved to Medicine Hat, and after attending Alexandra High School, Stuart hired on with CP as a steam locomotive fireman.
Just after his 70th birthday, while touring the country on his own, he went bungee jumping, rode a jet boat and went sky-diving.
The Funeral Service will be held at FIFTH AVENUE MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH, 476 – 4 Street SE, on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Chelsea Masterman officiating. Interment will take place at St. Margaret’s Cemetery at a later date.
