1935 ~ MARILYN THORSON ~ 2018

Thorson, Marilyn Ora of Bow Island, Alberta passed away peacefully at Bow Island Hospital on Sunday, December 16th, 2018 at the age of 83 years. The middle child of Alvin and Ora Johnson, Marilyn was born in Okotoks, Alberta on June 5th, 1935. From there, the family moved to the Winnifred area where Marilyn grew up on a farm with her siblings Lorraine (Cooper) and Shirley Ann (Mulner). Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Ron; and her children, Deanna, Douglas, Barb and Darrel (Christina, nee Nezic). Marilyn was immensely proud of her children and her grandchildren, Todd, Jackie, Morgan, Stacy, Jimmy, Alexandra and Emily; and her great grandchildren, Ronin, Thoran, Dyson, Oliver, Harley and Belle. Marilyn was a lively and competitive spirit from her earliest days. An avid athlete with excellent grades, Marilyn was always out in the yard with her father, Alvin, playing "ball" whenever she could. After graduating from high school, Marilyn went to the Garbetts Business College and got her diploma there before commencing work at the Department of Agriculture in Medicine Hat. She started dating Ron shortly thereafter and they were married a few years later on March 4th, 1955. They moved to Ron's family farmhouse near Winnifred and soon had four very active children in a house with no running water. Marilyn reminisced about getting up on a cold morning and having to thaw out the pot of water on the stove which had frozen solid overnight. But no matter for Marilyn. Her energy, relentless positivity and sheer will provided a wonderful environment for the children and their many friends. However, Marilyn did not let a busy lifestyle prevent her from her weekly trips to Medicine Hat to play ball and enjoy curling bonspiels and leagues whenever possible. As her children grew up and moved away, Marilyn continued on with her many activities and picked up golf and became a dedicated member of the Bow Island Golf Club. When she wasn't golfing, curling, making deer sausage, canning fish or playing a competitive game of bridge, she convinced Ron to travel whenever possible. They took trips to Vietnam, China, Cuba, Australia, Mexico, Turkey, Europe and elsewhere and, in between, squeezed in their three month winter getaway to Arizona. Just in the last year, Marilyn and Ron took a cruise to Hawaii, took another cruise throughout the Baltic countries and squeezed in trips to Calgary, Kelowna and Texas. Whenever anyone asked Marilyn how she was doing, her standard response was "Busy! Is it Saturday already!!" Also an avid card player, Marilyn was well known for anticipating her opponents' plays and making outrageous bids in bridge, smear and wist and, somehow always seeming to win. Marilyn's zest for life was only exceeded by her generosity. Whenever a family member or friend needed help, Marilyn was always there. When Marilyn and Ron sold the family farm in 2016, it gave Marilyn tremendous satisfaction to help out her kids and grand-kids whatever the need. And last, regardless of the circumstances, she could never stop smiling and laughing. So, please, whenever you think of Marilyn, think of that big broad smile, that slightly irritating laugh and embrace life and love as strongly as she did. A Celebration of Marilyn's Life will be held at ST. ANDREW'S UNITED CHURCH, 139 – 2nd Avenue West, Bow Island, on Saturday, December 22nd, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lisa Waites officiating. Interment will follow at Bow Island Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Marilyn's memory may be made to the Bow Island and District Health Foundation, P.O. Bag 3990, Bow Island AB, T0K 0G0. Condolences may be sent through http://www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Marilyn Thorson. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to

1935 ~ FRANCES SCHNIEDER ~ 2018

Frances Donelda “Francie” Schnieder, was born on March 2, 1935, in a farmhouse in Southwest Saskatchewan. Her early years were spent working in a bank in Maple Creek, where she met her first husband, Bill. Together, they raised 5 children in Regina, SK, until his passing in 1969. Francie moved to Medicine Hat, AB to be closer to her family where she met Walter Schnieder of Brooks, AB. They were married in 1972 and had a son, Cory. Cory kept her young with his 4H club and hockey. She was always sad to see the season over, as this was her social life in the winter. She had great gatherings with her dear friends and neighbours, Steven and Judy Stockwell and Alan and Sheila Connors. Mom worked hard out in the field, side by side with Walter; fencing, irrigating, branding, weaning, processing calves and all the other hundreds of job that a farm wife had. She was also employed with her good friend, Sandy Massey, at Charlton Auction Service as a cook for many years. She really enjoyed the company of the cattle buyers, distributors, and the crews who worked a long side of her. Mom and Walt retired to Redcliff, AB, in 1999. She had a regular set of ladies that met for cards once a month, reminiscing about the good old days. They resided in Redcliff until they made the move to Cypress View Lodge in September 2017. Here she met a whole new group of friends; playing cards and bingo, working in the Tuck Shop, and listening to live music, which she so loved. Mom was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of ’18. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 19, 2018. Loved ones that cleared the path for Francie, were her first husband, Bill; her son Michael in 2005; daughter, Jill, in 2005; and daughter-in-law, Ruth, in 2018; parents, Everett and Gladys Johnson of Consul, SK; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Lawrence Meier of Medicine Hat, AB; brother, Ron Johnson of Consul, SK; and her sister and brother-in-law, Bev and Elmer Gebhart of McCord, SK. Loved ones that will miss Francie until they meet again are her husband of 46 years, Walter; her three sons, Jeff Riddell, Rob (Terri) Riddell, and Cory (Jane) Schneider; daughter, Carol (Barry) Wilson; and step children, Ralph (Patty) Schnieder, Bev Tedford and Don Schnieder. My First Christmas In Heaven
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below,
With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear,
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,
But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here.
I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description to hear the Angels sing.
I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart,
But I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart.
So be happy for me dear ones, you know I hold you dear.
And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above.
I send you each a memory of my undying love,
After all “Love” is the gift more precious than pure gold¥

PATTY LOU “PAT” BAXTER

November 15, 1929 – December 24, 2018
Pat was born in Trochu, Alberta to Myrtle and Gordon Witwer and raised on the family farm outside of Sunnyslope. She was the oldest of four girls, followed by Shirley, Elaine and Doreen. She always had a story to tell about living on the farm, usually involving the antics of four young girls and their pony but also about the hardships of the second world war and living through a polio outbreak.
In the late 1940s she met Albert “Ab” Baxter on a blind date and they were married on April 28, 1949. Together they raised seven children, Leslie, Danny, Brian, Brenda, Carol, Donald and Jim. They moved around Alberta and British Columbia as Ab followed work in the oilfield. Pat was a talented seamstress doing alterations for local dress shops and creating custom wedding gowns and hats. She enjoyed listening to live music whether it was Ab playing the saxophone at dances in the 1950s and 1960s or her son Jim playing local gigs in Medicine Hat many decades later.
After Ab passed away in 2000 she retired to Medicine Hat. She was often teased about being a bad cook and never denied it, but she always had a cup of tea ready for visitors, the dice ready for a game of Yahtzee and an old dog lying at her feet.
In Pat’s last years she coped with health issues that come with age and fought a stubborn battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She passed away peacefully on the evening of December 24, 2018.
Along with her parents and husband, Pat was predeceased by her sister Doreen, grandchildren Chance, Aaron and Randy. She will be fondly remembered by those she left behind. At Pat’s request, there will be no funeral service.
We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for the excellent care and compassion she received in her last years living at the Cypress View Foundation and to the nurses and doctors who helped her along in her last days at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

HILDA ESTHER RICHARDSON (NEE MIGOWSKY)

January 19th, 1928 to December 25th, 2018

Hilda was born in Herbert, Saskatchewan, but she grew up in Leader and lived all of her life in this little town on the prairie that she knew and loved so much. She grew old in Leader. She became feeble and slowly left us, but she never left Leader. And now her circle of life is complete.
She went to school in Leader through the war years and completed Grade 10 in 1944. She continued her education at Luther College in Regina and graduated from grade 12 in 1946. When she returned from away, she worked as a nursing aide in the hospital for a time before meeting and marrying Fred Kelln in 1947. Hilda was married to Fred until his death in 1986. They raised two children, Kim, born in 1954, and Tammy, born in 1959, in their little house across from the park.
As her children grew, Hilda became restless and decided that the time was right in 1968 to become more than a mother and home maker. With her mother picking up “daycare”, she became the Eaton’s agent in Leader, providing a much needed catalog service to the community.
As the catalog business diminished, she pursued her other passion and became the editor of the Leader News for many years. Hardly impartial, Hilda was a strong advocate for progress and the building of community. She talked passionately about the town and did her best to make sure people were engaged, putting her words into action as a member of the Economic Development Council in the mid 80’s.
Hilda married Eric Richardson in 1988 and they started their new life together as a retired yet active couple in Leader. At about the same time, she decided that she needed to take a more active role in making her home town a better place to live in and was elected to the Town Council from 1988 until 1991.
Completing her active role in the community was her stint on the Lutheran Church Council from 1990 until 1994 when Eric came on Council. Hilda was elected as a Deacon of the church and served as acting chairperson in 1991 for a period of time.
Since being retired just meant more time to serve your community, Hilda was involved with the Leader Housing Authority from 1993 until 2008 and with the Leader Tourism Board from the mid-90’s until 2004. She was always promoting and took great pleasure in taking anyone that looked interested around to all of the tourist sites.
Eventually, retirement had to mean actual retirement and both her and Eric wrapped up a lot of their community involvement, spending more time with family and friends. In the early years of the new millennium, Hilda’s advancing dementia made it difficult to live independently and it became necessary to move into a full care facility in Maple Creek; something that neither of them wanted.
Eric passed away in 2014 and Hilda was devastated. She was much happier when she was able to move back to the Western Senior Citizens Home in Leader. She knew that she was home, although everything else was becoming fainter and further away. The last few years were not kind to Hilda, but at least she was home.
Hilda is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Pauline Migowsky and by her first and second husbands, Fred Kelln and Eric Richardson. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Anderson; her son and daughter, Kim (Christine) Kelln and Tammy Dietrich; her Grandchildren Jocelyn (Jay), Meagan (Alan Cho) and Graeme Kelln, and Ben (Leanna) and Dan (Courtney) Dietrich; and her Great-Grandchildren Eleanor and Penelope Cho-Kelln, and Sara, Emily, Vienna and Autumn Dietrich.
The funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Leader, on Thursday, January 3rd, 2019, at 11:00 am. Interment will be in the Leader Cemetery.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, special care aides, cleaning, laundry and kitchen staff at the Western Senior Citizens Home for all the loving care they gave Hilda over the last several years.
Donations in memory of Hilda can be made to the Leader Ladies Auxiliary care of the Western Senior Citizens Home, Box 129, Leader, SK, S0N 1H0. Online condolences may be offered to the family at binkleysfuneralservice.com

"Jim" Adelbert James Adams

1934 ~ 2018
“Jim” Adelbert James Adams, beloved husband of 55 years to Faith Adams of Medicine Hat, passed away on Tuesday, December 25th, 2018 at the age of 84 years. Jim also leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kim (Martin) Lafrance and Dawn (Darrell) Bonagofsky; three grandsons, Brendan, Drake and Kieran; his honourary daughter, Pam (Alan) Lafrance; and all those who knew him. Jim was predeceased by his mother, father, infant brother, special aunt, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and many cousins. Jim was born on a farm near Kenaston, Saskatchewan where he grew up. He found a passion for bricklaying from watching out the window at school and he began bricklaying at the age of 19 years in Saskatoon. He then moved to Swift Current and obtained his Pilot License. It was in Swift Current that he met the love of his life, Faith and daughter, Kim. Jim and Faith were married and moved to the Hat. Over the years he worked for Hagbloom Construction, Mel Air, Medicine Hat Brick and Tile (IXL Industries), Time Air (Canadian Regional, Canadian Airlines, Air Canada) as well as many flying schools that he taught at. Jim enjoyed his pilot career where he had the chance to work with many friends and his two daughters along the way. For over 30 years Jim worked with Jim Marshall, whom he thought of as a brother, as a private bricklayer doing brick murals; a highlight of that was a mural in Japan. On retirement, Jim did a lot of work restoring Medalta. He was proud of the home he designed and built on Riverside and the cabin in Washington–he was able to fix anything. Jim loved travelling the world, crop dusting, growing orchids, curling, baseball, hockey, golf and doing anything with his grandchildren. In his retirement Jim and Faith enjoyed Snowbirding to Palm Springs and at the age of 81 years, renovated a 1911 house that they lived in at the time of his passing. He was very honoured by the picture of himself standing on the wing of a plane at the airport. Jim's family has been told many times that "He was a great man, always thinking about others, and a true friend." He was a very respectable man who did anything to help others and will be missed dearly by his family and many friends. Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Friday, January 4th, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at HOLY FAMILY PARISH, 1451 Strachan Road SE, on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Vijaya Bathineni officiating.

Hundreds of family and friends filled Senator Gershaw School a week ago today to honour a man who will be remembered for his kindness and for his love of family. A heartfelt tribute and poems recited by his loved ones will ensure that Dale's legacy will live on in all those lives he touched.

You gave us all you had to give,
Gifts big and small,
But most of all you gave us love,
The greatest gift of all!

His Life Lived…
His Life Cherished…
His Life Honoured.

MONA DOBBIN

January 18, 1953 ~ January 4, 2019

With heavy hearts, the family of Mona Frances Dobbin (nee Knox), beloved wife of John, announce her sudden passing on Friday, January 4, 2019, at the age of 65 years. Mona was born on January 18, 1953, the fifth daughter born to Frank and Monica Knox of St. Shotts, Newfoundland. She later became a big sister to Lorraine. Mona spent her years growing up in St. Shotts and then married the man of her dreams from St. Mary's Bay, John Dobbin on February 27,1971. Together they built a home in Trepassey and had four wonderful children, Sonya, Johnny, Jeanette and Wanda. Mona spent most of her working career at the fish plant in Trepassey. When the fisheries ended she had no choice but to go be with her children in Alberta. Mona then worked at Lakeside packers for over 10 years. Just over 5 years ago, she found out she was in stage 4 kidney failure. Mona was a strong fighter who pushed through many ups and downs during her battle with this illness. The family would like to thank the chronic kidney unit at the Medicine Hat Hospital and Dr Ahmad. Left to mourn Mona is a large circle of family and friends: husband, John; children, Sonya (Craig), Johnny, Jeanette (Terry) and Wanda (Juan); five wonderful grandchildren, Kyler (Savannah), Jaxon (Sidney), Summer, Terri Lynn and Blake and very special puppy grandkids, Buddy and Kica; Macie and Finnix; sisters, Jose, Ange (Ren), Blanche (Des) and June; John’s family, Katherine, Margie, Randy, Cas, Mikey, Edwina, Irene, Rosemary, Phonse, Jo, Jim, Irene, Johnny and Terry. She is met in heaven by her mommy and daddy, Frank and Monica Knox; grandson, John; sister, Lorraine; nephew, Terry; in-laws, John and Kathleen Dobbin, Marie, Theresa, Anne, Georgina, Gerry, Harvey, Cliff and Ralph. Mona had a passion and love for bingo and everyone who knew her knows that. She spent her last years playing at Top Hat Bingo where she met many new friends. On January 18, which would have been her 66 birthday, cake will be served in her honour during Top Hat Bingo’s Intermission. Please come spend the evening in her memory and join us playing Bingo. Mona wished to be brought home to Newfoundland where she could rest in peace with her mom and dad. A small service will be held to honour her at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 238 – 2 Avenue N.E., Medicine Hat on Friday, January 11, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. The family will honor her wishes and take her home with a burial to be held in her honor in Trespassey, Newfoundland at a later date. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting http://www.cooksouthland.com).

“I admired her not for her smile though it was beautiful.
Not for her eyes, though they shone brightly.
I admired her for her battle scars and war wounds
that she displayed proudly for the world to see.
I admired her for her strength and courage.”

Honoured to serve the family is
