We Will Remember…

These three powerful words greeted everyone as they entered the Funeral Home this past Monday, congregating together to remember the life of an honourable man… Donald Alexander. Reverend Pollard led a celebration filled with music, prayer, moments of laughter and tears. Family ensured that Don’s many medals were on display, a depiction of his selfless service to our Country. During the interment service that followed, family shared an opportunity to place flowers with Don as a final farewell.

An honourable man,
He will be cherished forever,
For service and sacrifice,

We Will Remember…

These three powerful words greeted everyone as they entered the Funeral Home this past Monday, congregating together to remember the life of an honourable man… Donald Alexander. Reverend Pollard led a celebration filled with music, prayer, moments of laughter and tears. Family ensured that Don’s many medals were on display, a depiction of his selfless service to our Country. During the interment service that followed, family shared an opportunity to place flowers with Don as a final farewell.

An honourable man,
He will be cherished forever,
For service and sacrifice,
“We Will Remember”

His Life Lived…
His Life Cherished…
His Life Honoured.

KUHN

Anne Kuhn of Medicine Hat passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at the age of 98 years, beloved wife of the late Peter Kuhn. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Carl (Pat) Kuhn, Jerry (Barb) Kuhn, Colleen (Elton) Steinley and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Kuhn; twelve grandchildren, Candace and her children, Riley and Reese; Sheldon (LeeAnn) and their children, Kaylin, Shaina, Brittany; Darren (Annette) and their children, Brendan, Brookelyn and Morgan; Jarrod (Carolyn) and their children, Chantelle (Landon) and their children, Hudson and Charlie; and Tyrel (Chynna), Ashton (Randi) and Darci (Craig); Joeleen (Todd) and their children, Teren and Hailey; Jaime (Roger) and their children, Reed and Hunter; Jordan (Yolanda) and their children Ava and William; Kristie (Ron) and their children Joel, Jaylene; Kathy (Joel) and their children, Jaida, Presley and Emerson; Mark; Kole (Carey) and their son Karter; and Kellan (Stacey) and their daughter, Aspen. She was predeceased by her foster parents, Paul and Anna Zubot; her husband, Peter in 2003, and one son, Irwin in 2010. Anne was raised in Mendham, Saskatchewan and on May 4, 1936, she married Peter Kuhn. They began farming in Estuary, Saskatchewan until moving to Acadia Valley in 1946. It was there that they continued to farm and raise their family until retiring to Medicine Hat in 1975. Mom was a true farm wife. Everything was grown or raised on the farm. It was a team effort and between Mom and Dad, they worked together to supply our family with all that was needed. Anne was a dedicated member of her community. She was a CWL member since 1951, belonged to the Acadia Valley Community Club for over 30 years, was a member of the Home and School Association and a Brownie and Girl Guide leader. Mom was an accomplished seamstress. We displayed many of her projects in our homes, from knitting to crocheting and quilting. During her time in Medicine Hat, she belonged to St. Pat’s Quilting Club well into her 90's. Her flower garden and indoor plants were always a source of joy to her, but she always wanted to know how much it had rained or whether harvest was done. She was still a farm wife at heart. Mom moved to “The Wellington” in 2006, and loved her life there for over 10 years. She made many friends and enjoyed her independence. She was the nucleus of our family. We will always remember Mom with love, for her style, sense of humour, and devotion to her family. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Rd SE) on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Dr. Peter Glockner, B.Sc (Hon.), M.Sc., Ph.D., P. Eng.

January 26, 1929 – November 5, 2016
Dr. Peter Glockner passed away peacefully at Agape Hospice in Calgary, on November 5, 2016. He is survived by Sarah (nee Kraft), his wife of 61 years, his daughter Marilyn (Jack Dale) and his brother John (Rita) of Nelson, B.C., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Born in Mórágy, Hungary to Peter Glockner and Elisabeth Biel, Peter obtained his grade and secondary school education before leaving his native land with his parents and brother in 1946. They immigrated to Canada in 1949, settling in Medicine Hat. After spending a year and a half as a construction labourer, playing with local bands and learning English, he returned to school for a year, graduating in June 1951, with distinction and setting a new provincial record high average grade in the departmental examinations. This earned him a scholarship at McGill where he earned a B. Sc. (Honours) in Civil Engineering. A fellowship took him to MIT for his M.Sc. and the Ford Foundation provided support for his Ph. D. at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
His academic career began in February, 1958 at the University of Alberta as Assistant Professor of Applied Mechanics in Civil Engineering. At his request, he was transferred to the new Calgary campus in September 1960, where he became a founding member of the Faulty of Engineering, spending the remainder of his career in teaching and research. He became Associate and Full professor of Civil Engineering in 1962 and 1967 respectively, served as Acting Head of Civil Engineering and was invited to become Head of Mechanical Engineering in 1976, holding that position for 11 years. From 1976 until his retirement in 1994, he was professor in both Departments. He wrote A Place of Ingenuity, a book on the Faculty of Engineering's history. His foundational work in two departments and the faculty were recognized by appointing him Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Engineering, a first-ever distinction.
Dr. Glockner’s fundamental and applied studies on solid mechanics topics such as the behaviour of shells and inflatables, creeping stability and constitutive modeling of nonlinear time-dependent materials including ice, resulted in over 300 publications and invitations for lectures and keynote addresses around the globe. His contributions were also recognized by numerous awards, prizes and distinctions including EIC’s Gzowski Gold Medal, ASCE’s Mosseiff Medal and Prize and the 1993 Canadian Congress of Applied Mechanics, CANCAM, Medal and Award. In 1994, a special international conference, "A World of Shells," was organized in his honour at the Banff Centre.
Professor Glockner served on boards of directors of national and international learned societies and professional organizations and has been elected Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics by whom he was selected President Elect for 1994-95, The American Society of Civil Engineers, The Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, and the Engineering Institute of Canada.
With his wife Sarah, he established the Peter Glockner Engineering Scholarship for Excellence, awarded to a third-year student enrolled full-time in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
Peter Glockner found relaxation in his lifelong love of playing the accordion, in swimming and playing tennis, and in writing and editing the Hungarian Ethnic Lexicon, an English translation of a Hungarian Encyclopedia.

ELLA JEAN WILLIAMS

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Ella Jean Williams, on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at the QEII Hospital, with family at her side, at the age of 83 years.
Ella leaves to cherish her memory her children: George (Nellie) Williams, Allan Williams (Teena Shaw), Susan Williams (Harvey Menard) and Sandra Williams; seven grandchildren: Carolyn and Tony McAffee (Anthony and Mitchell), Ivy Williams and Wyatt Knopp, Anna Williams, Samuel and Nikole Menard (Jade and Jasmine), Matthew Menard, Riley Forbes, and Sawyer Forbes; nephew Terry (Jacqueline) Hunt; cousin Alice Switzer; and two sisters in-law, Elizabeth Williams and Patricia Williams.
Ella was predeceased by her beloved husband Kenneth Mark Williams, loving brother, William Hunt, parents Alice McNeil and Allan Hunt, and son in-law Sheldon Forbes.
Our beautiful Mom was born in Calgary during the Great Depression. Times were tough and before the onset of WWII, Mom and her older brother Bill moved east to live with family in Oshawa and Ottawa, and back to Calgary.
During their younger years, Mom and Bill discovered what would become their lifelong and shared passion for films of the Golden Age. Bill was the projectionist, showing movies to friends, family, neighbors, and Mom the actress understudy.
On special occasions, Mom brought to life for us many Golden Age actresses with her entertaining impersonations. Dad said he knew he would marry Mom the first time he saw her, and they were married for almost 64 years.
Mom took great care of us when we were kids and put up with all our nonsense, and Dad’s, to the best of her abilities. When Christmas approached, the kitchen became her homemade cookie and candy factory. We had no idea how lucky we were back then, but we had the best Mom we could have wished for.
Mom loved to learn and always had a project on the go, whether it was painting, drawing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafts of all kinds, cooking, making a beautiful wedding cake from scratch, writing, learning to type on a typewriter and typing essays, or just watching an old film or reading a good book. She took many courses, taught us what she learned and we all followed suit in our own unique way.
Mom was Dad’s right-hand woman and was always there alongside him in whatever task or trial they faced together. Mom helped Dad deliver Meals on Wheels and volunteered at The Post in Medicine Hat for many years. Mom and Dad enjoyed socializing and playing crib with friends at the Veiner Centre and Mom enjoyed skunking Dad on occasion too.
Mom was gracious, loving, kind, thoughtful, strong, non-judgmental and always had a twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. She maintained her savvy wit and kept us laughing and smiling with her quips and comebacks to the end. We know one thing for sure, we were all deeply loved by our dear, sweet little Mom, Mother In-law, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Aunt. We love you and we miss you Mom and Dad, rest in peace together now, with generations passed.
Our family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff of the Medicine Hat Hospital and Home Care and the QEII Hospital and Home Care. A special thanks to Glen Sletvold and Samantha Brimage for their thoughtful care and kindness to our Mom for many years. A truly special and heartfelt thank you to Susan and Harvey, who took excellent care of Mom and spoiled her with gourmet cooking, love, hugs, laughter and the joyful pitter patter of great-grandchildren in their loving home for the last year and half of Mom’s life.
A private interment will be held at Queen’s Park Cemetery in Calgary, followed by a family gathering.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local SPCA (12220-104 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 8A8). Mom, like Dad, had a special place in her heart for all creatures great and small.

Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in St. Peter Lutheran Church (758 8th Street SE) on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Along with Ann, Stephen leaves to cherish his memory: two children, Shane (Sharon) and Sherri (Rocky); four grandchildren, Courtney, Taylin-Ann, Xavier-David and Dahlia. He is also survived by two brothers, Bruce (Denise) and Terry (Michelle); one sister, Christine; three sisters-in-law, Jean, Joan and Effie as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Lester and Martha King; step-father, Maxwell Wiscombe; brothers, Raymond, Ambrose and Samuel as well as five siblings in infancy. Stephen Lester King was born to proud parents, Lester and Martha King on July 23, 1948, in Creston North, Newfoundland. This is also where he married the love of his life, Anne Marie Brake, on July 11, 1969. He enjoyed his career as a fine wood worker, using his carpentry skills to help many throughout the years. In his younger years, Stephen enjoyed playing hockey. Later in life, he enjoyed watching boxing and hockey, especially his favorite sporting team of all time, the Montreal Canadiens! Stephen was a loving, caring, compassionate, funny and friendly person who was devoted to his family, friends and especially to God. He set an example of honesty, integrity and generosity with everything he did, especially through his service for his church. Although nothing topped spending time with his grandchildren, Stephen enjoyed a visit with family and friends or even just some time spent fiddling around with all of his many tools.
