ROSE (ANTON) BRUCKER

1915 – 2016
Rose Brucker died on January 15, just a few months away from her 101st birthday. She lived independently for 99 years and was a mighty force in the world with a great intellect and witty sense of humour. Rose attended high school in Medicine Hat and, in the 1930s, graduated from the nursing program at Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. She was a consummate nurse throughout her life, serving informally in many ways in the small towns she and her husband settled in. After raising their three children—Robert, Bette and Patricia—Rose returned to nursing full-time, first at the University Hospital in Saskatoon and then at the Regina General Hospital until her retirement.
Rose was always interested in the goings on in the world and loved to share her opinions. She was a voracious reader, loved to travel and to dine out. Rose was also a wonderful cook and baker and will be remembered always by her family for her creamed chicken, cinnamon buns, apple strudel and the best-ever pies. Rose is survived by her children and their families, including eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Margaret and many nieces and nephews. The family thanks Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina for the care and kindness they provided Rose in her last home with us.

ELVA "NORINE" (SAUBAK) CARLSON

May 20 , 1934 – January 22, 2016
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, mother-in-law, gramma and great gramma (GG). She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Ponoka Hospital, Ponoka, Alberta. She was born in Taber, Alberta to Lester and Sarah (Sadie) Day. Her childhood years were spent on the farm south of Fincastle, Alberta with eight other siblings. Her father passed away when she was only two years old. After his death, the family moved to Taber where she received all of her education to Grade 10 and then she went to work at the Post Office. After her corresponding by letter for quite some time with Earl Saubak, they married on February 2, 1953. After their marriage, they moved to Devon, Alberta where they first son, Jim, was born. Shortly thereafter they moved back to Taber. While living in Taber; Ron, Gerry and Karen were born. Then a job came along in the Oil industry which moved the family to Tilley in 1962. Our first home there was a run down farm house, affectionately known as the “Ponderosa”. In 1963, we moved into the town of Tilley and that was the beginning of being settled for many years. In 1964, Cheryl was born to complete the family. Mom returned to work for Canada Post at the Tilley Post Office where she was Post Mistress for 25 years. Mom and Dad were divorced in 1995, and she moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. That same year, Mom became very ill and experienced liver failure. In December of 1995, she received a liver transplant at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. That gave us 20 more years to spend with her. In 1998, Mom met her second husband, Tory Carlson. They were married October 10, 1998 and spent their time happily in Medicine Hat until his death in June of 2007. Dad passed away previously that year, on January 1, 2007 in Brooks, Alberta. Mom then moved to Red Deer to be closer to her family. Then in 2009, her health started to decline so we moved her to Sunrise Village in Ponoka, Alberta. Gerry and Gwen saw to it that her every need was met. She lived there until her death. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, dancing, her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by five children, Jim (Cindy), Ron (Hui), Gerry (Gwen), Karen, and Cheryl (Darrell Hein) ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings: Ivan Day, Albert (Bud) Day, Verna Brown, Floy Hyde, Lenor Edwards, Donna Carlsen, Phyllis Day, James (Jay) Day, her first husband Earl, and her second husband, Tory. She was laid to rest at the Prairie View Cemetery in Medicine Hat, on January 29, 2016 with immediate family present. The ceremony was officiated by Bishop Schow from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A Celebration of Life will be held in Ponoka on May 20, 2016. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, Calgary/Southern Alberta Chapter, Suite 309, 1010 – 1 Ave. NE, Calgary, AB T2E 7W7 or to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 1A St SW, Calgary, AB T2H 0G5. Mrs. Irene Gans, beloved wife of the late Mr. Edwin Gans, passed away peacefully at Sunnyside Nursing Home, on Friday, February 5, 2016, at the age of 90 years. Irene will be forever remembered in the hearts of her son, Wes Gans and his wife Coleen who was Irene’s living angel; their son, Chad (Amy) Gans; grandsons, Kolter and Keaten; granddaughter, Derrian; her sister-in-law, Violet Gans. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Edwin; two brothers, three sisters and five brothers-in-law. Irene was born on October 27, 1925, in Burstall, SK., and attended school at Alexander Plain. Her first and last job was at a hardware store in Leader where she met the owner’s son, Edwin Gans after he was discharged from the army. They were married on November 9, 1945, and Edwin continued to work with his dad and brother in the family hardware business. In 1995, Ed and Irene retired to Medicine Hat. After Edwin’s passing she moved into Chinook Village where she made many friends and enjoyed playing cards and shuffleboard until her health began failing in 2012. She then moved to Valleyview, CypressView and finally to Sunnyside where she resided until her passing. The family wishes to thank all of her caregivers over the years, your kindness and caring was deeply appreciated and didn’t go unnoticed by the family. Mom loved her hockey and was a Tiger season ticket holder for a number of years with the highlight being able to watch her only grandson, Chad play in the WHL. In later years when she was no longer able to attend the Tiger’s games, she was an avid listener of Bob Ridley. Before her health took a turn for the worse, she got to see the Tigers play in the new Canalta Centre. Irene lived a very simple and routine driven life. All of her life, she loved shopping for clothes, perusing the grocery flyers, entertaining and cooking family suppers. They will miss her fresh buns, Krut Bierocks and chokecherry jam. Some of her desert cakes (ice box and chocolate log) which became family favorites will continue to be family favorites. Another favorite past time of Irene’s was sewing, spending countless hours on new projects and patching jeans. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family. ZIEGENHAGEL

John went to be with his Lord and Savior early Wednesday morning, February 10, at the age of 82. He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons Ryan Ziegenhagel (Darlene), Daniel (Lorna), and David (Elaine). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jared Ziegenhagel, and daughters Rae-anne, Ally, and Olivia, (Karmen Earl Ziegenhagel); Adam (Janice) Ziegenhagel, and son Seth; Meagan Ziegenhagel (Timothy Miller) and daughter Zahrya; Sheldon Ziegenhagel; Duane (Christine) Ziegenhagel and daughters Jayda and Maddy; Kyle and Travis Ziegenhagel and numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife Irene, his brother George Ziegenhagel and one sister Freda Swadling. John was born in Medicine Hat in 1933, and was raised on the family farm north of Elkwater in the Robertson district by his parents Jacob and Amelia. He lived there until 1950, when he moved into Medicine Hat to attend high school. During his years in high school he was known for his athletic abilities, especially as a ball player and was known to be a very good dancer. In 1954, he met his soon to be lifelong soul mate Irene Veasey whom he dated for awhile. It was during this courtship that John was introduced to the Christian lifestyle which Irene was involved in, and it was not long before his most important relationship in life developed with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1955, John and Irene were wed and remained married till Irene’s passing in November of 2011. John and Irene were joined by their three sons, Ryan in 1957, the twins Daniel and David in 1959 and their family was complete. During John’s courtship with Irene he worked at numerous jobs which included, selling sewing machines and working on the underpass between Railway streets. His true working passion turned out to be the furniture business. He started his life long career in furniture at a store named Capital Furniture in downtown Medicine Hat. He started in the warehouse but was quickly promoted to the sales floor because of his ability to speak German. He remained with Capital Furniture until they decided to close their doors in 1966. From there he partnered with two other gentlemen, Albert Parker and Alec Tennant, to start Parker’s Furniture. Over the course of time he bought out his two partners and by the late 70’s he was the sole owner of Parker’s. John was an extremely well respected member of the furniture community and the business community in Medicine Hat. Over the years John attended and served on the Board of First Assembly of God and was also one of the original 16 member’s instrumental in starting the “Christ the King” church now known as River Valley Community Church in the flats area of Medicine Hat. He served on the board at this church and was very much gratified to see this work grow as it has. John in his last years also really enjoyed time with his brother Art and his three sisters Alice, Edna and Ruth. They could be found together every Tuesday at one of the local restaurants sharing lunch as well anecdotes from the past. He really cherished this time and even when feeling poorly always made an effort to make these Tuesday lunches. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. only.

Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. only. 1930 ~ BOBRYK ~ 2016

Bobryk/Provencher – nee Keeler – Janice Audrey, aged 86, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend passed away peacefully on February 8th, 2016 in Edmonton, Alberta. Jan was born on January 8th, 1930 in Waldeck, Saskatchewan and attended school there, as well as Swift Current, Saskatchewan. She graduated from the Medicine Hat General Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1952 and worked in Swift Current, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Flin Flon, Manitoba and retired from the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital in 1989. Janice was an outstanding nurse and attained the position of Head Nurse for the Women’s Surgical Unit at the pinnacle of her career.
As well as her nursing duties, Jan also found time for her volunteer work such as the CWL (Catholic Women’s League), Member of the Legion Ladies Auxillary, or working at the “Post Thrift Store” in Medicine Hat. She was a generous and caring woman who gladly donated her time to help others. She was also interested in playing Bridge and Scrabble, sewing, quilting, and knitting,
But Janice’s greatest accomplishment was raising her five children. Her heartfelt wish was that she had done a good job of being a parent and guardian, and that they were successful in their lives and careers. She instilled a purpose to attain higher education in them and that is clearly evident in all their accomplishments. She also believed that you had to give back to not only your community, but also your country.
She is survived by her son, Donald Provencher (wife Chris) and their children Chelsea and Cody of Calgary, Alberta; son, Ernie Provencher (wife Christine) and their sons Nicholas (Ashley) and Marc (Jamie) of Sherwood Park, Alberta as well as great granddaughter Heidi; daughter, Michelle Neitz (husband Harlan) and their children Brody and Juanita of Medicine Hat, Alberta; daughter, Lisa Scott of Houston, Texas and her children Jessica, Alexandra, and Brenden.
She is survived also by sisters, Mary Wells of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Dorothy Duthie of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and Margaret “Peggy” Hamilton (husband Gerald) of Medicine Hat, Alberta. She will also be missed by many special nieces and nephews. Janice was predeceased by one son, David Provencher; one granddaughter, Angela Marie Neitz; as well as her brother, Arthur, and sisters, May and Olive.
She was the rock of our family and a pillar of strength in her determination for a better future for her family. We will miss her laugh and humor and especially the “twitch” of her nose. God bless her on her next journey.

ANDERSON, France's (nee Foster)

1918-2016
Frances, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died in her home February 12, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She left this world with the same humour, grace, and dignity in which she lived every day of her life.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on April 25, 1918, to Frances and Robert Foster, Frances was one of 8 children. She is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Norman Anderson. Frances is survived by her children Norman Anderson, James (Margaret) Anderson, and Margaret Anderson Koch; 7 grandchildren and, 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Frances grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with her 3 sisters and 4 brothers. At the age of 17, she left her home to pursue a career with Unilever in London, England. This is where she lived when WW II broke out and she enlisted in the RAF. It is during this time she met her handsome Canadian husband who was in the Canadian Division of the RAF. They were married on December 11, 1943, and endured the following war torn years often being apart and never knowing when or if they would see each other again. At the end of the war Frances followed her husband, and as one of the many war brides who left their homeland, she arrived in Canada in April 1946. Norman and Frances lived in his hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta, where they built their life together and raised their family. This is where they shared their life until the passing of Norman in February 2008. Frances then moved to Victoria in 2009 to live in the home of her daughter Margaret and grand-daughter Shauneen (Brian) Koch and two great grandchildren, Roan and Zaida Koch-Gerritsen. She loved living in a home where she was the matriarch of 4 generations and she loved living her final years in Victoria as it brought her closer to her family located on the West Coast. Frances would often say how much Victoria reminded her of her Irish homeland. Frances continued to do the things she loved right up until her final days. Her hand knit sweaters, her beautiful quilts, and her love of gardening are some of the things that will live on in the generation that follows. Her wonderful Irish sayings, her tenacity and spirited way of living, and the wisdom she shared are only a few of the things that will be sorely missed.
Those who knew and loved Frances will miss her sharp Irish wit, her keen sense of humour, and loving and generous heart. She was much loved and would agree that she had lived an amazing life. Special thanks and appreciation go out to Dr. David Woodley who went above and beyond our expectations in his care of our beloved Frances. Also a special thank you to granddaughters Sheri Anderson and Shauneen Koch whose loving and healing hands provided such comfort to Frances in her final hours.
A celebration of Frances' life will be held at 12:00, Saturday, February 20, 2016, in the Fireside Room at the Victoria Church of the Nazarene, 4277 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC. Pastor Gary Bennett officiating. Donations to her memory can be made to the Rainbow Kitchen, the Mustard Seed Bank, Bridges for Women, or a charity of your choice.

FRAME

Joyce Leota Frame was born August 16, 1925 in Watrous, Saskatchewan the daughter of Murray Read, a jovial carman for the CNR and Caroline Read, a stern but amazing cook, seamstress and housekeeper. Joyce went on to spend her life trying to be “half the person” that Leota MacDonald was, the midwife she was named after. She was the fourth of five children, and had her youngest sibling not been a girl she was prepared to trade her to a friend for her dollhouse. Luckily her sister Enid was born, so the trade was abandoned.
In 1936, following a promotion for Murray, the family moved to Regina. After finishing school in 1941, Joyce completed normal school to become a teacher. She did not begin teaching that fall as she was hoping for a school to open in Regina. Then a boarder in her mother’s boarding house told her West Plains school needed a teacher so she headed for Consul and started teaching in February 1942. She taught till the end of June of that year and those five months were the extent of her teaching career. She then returned to Regina to work as part of the war effort in an ammunition factory and a place that rewound electrical motors. But she had met Hughie Frame while in the Consul community and when she left at the end of the school year, he proposed. Not having enough money for an engagement ring, Joyce paid for it and later Hughie was able to sell a cow (“likely his only cow” Joyce would say) and pay her back. For the next few years, when harvest was over Hughie would head to Regina and work the winters there to be near to Joyce.
In the fall of 1945 they went to Moose Jaw with Hughie’s brother Jimmie, and Joyce’s brother Lloyd and sister Maida. They were married in front of the Justice of the Peace and then went to the Trianon Ballroom to go dancing. From there they built a small shack northwest of Consul and started to farm. Their daughter Carol arrived in 1950, followed shortly by their son Murray in 1952. A social pair, their life was full of family and friends with both of them having siblings and parents close by as Joyce’s parents would come out each summer to visit. Her mother’s help freed Joyce up to work in the field. She was far more comfortable in this role as she was never known for her cooking or housekeeping skills. She supported Hugh as well, who was intrigued by stories of flying in the war, got his pilot’s license and started an aviation and crop dusting business. Joyce could be seen ducking as he flew overhead and marking the spray trails as he crop dusted. The two were also surprised when their family grew to five in 1965 when their daughter Kristina was born. As Tina became active and social, Joyce’s life was kept busy by accompanying her to many sports and cultural events. On all of these excursions, she would be seen with knitting needles in hand as she knitted sweaters for all her grandchildren, friends and neighbours. Life continued in the community with dreams of retiring and flying across the country but before this could happen Hughie became ill with Parkinson’s and could no longer fly. This prompted them to instead winter in Arizona and again, they made many friends and enjoyed their winters away.
Joyce’s greatest loss was in 1992 when her daughter Tina suddenly died. Shortly after this, farming became more difficult for Joyce and Hugh, and Joyce was able to convince Hughie to semi-retire to Medicine Hat with many trips back home to the farm. She spent many years managing the care and treatment for Hughie’s disease and when he died in 2001, they had been married 56 years. She then traveled with her daughter Carol and was thrilled to drive across Canada to see the Niagara Falls, large ships travelling through the St. Lawrence Seaway and “My Fair Lady” at the Stratford Festival.
Unfortunately Joyce was not able to completely enjoy her retirement as she became ill with Alzheimer’s disease and slowly slipped away over the last 7 years. Yet long after she forgot our names, she would light up when any of us arrived at her care home and would excitedly tell the other residents “these are my people.” In her last years, she was lovingly cared for by the staff of Leisure Way Group Home of Medicine Hat, where she fondly became “Joycie”.
“Her people” will never forget her love and complete devotion to family. Joyce is predeceased by husband Hugh Frame, daughter Tina Danskin and her siblings Lloyd Read, Maida Schafer and Albert Read. She is survived by her sister Enid Burt, daughter Carol (Clare) Backman and son Murray (Wendy) Frame, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Leisure Way Group Home of Medicine Hat. A Memorial Service will take place in July, date to be confirmed. SCHNEIDER

1922 – 2016

James “Jim” Harry Schneider of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years on Tuesday, February 16, 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory two children, Carol (Jim) Hern of Bindloss and their children Jay Hern, Craig (BriAnne) Hern and their children Colton, Norah, Sam, Tyson, and Leanne (Scott) Fedyshen; Brian (Donna) Schneider and their children Lindy (Darrell) Archibald, their daughter Elise, Janay (Kyrk) Stenberg, and Rylan Schneider (Amy Weiss). Jim was predeceased by his parents Peter Jr. and Pauline, his wife Inga, three brothers and sisters-in-law Edwin (Annie), Alfred (Emma), Peter (Camilla), two sisters and brothers-in-law Alice (Lawrence) Lamb, Lillian (Jack) Noble, and two step brothers and their wives, Albert (Ella) Neubauer and Emil (Peggy) Neubauer. In 1903, Jim’s parents moved from Java, South Dakota to homestead in the Sentinel area, seventeen miles south of Irvine. He was born October 3, 1922 and was the youngest of six children. When Jim was eighteen months old his mother, Pauline died and nine months later his dad Peter Jr. married Caroline Neubauer. Two step bothers, Albert and Emil, came to live in the Schneider household. Jim attended the Sentinel School until Grade 9 and after finishing school worked at home and for neighbors Pink Eye Weiss and Johnny and Faye Beierbach. He then ventured farther from home working on a dairy farm at Blairmore and on a threshing crew in the Tilley area. The young men in the area were excited when a new young school teacher came to the district. Jim didn’t fall for the new teacher but was charmed by her girlfriend, Inga Nerland. In 1946, Jim acquired part of his dad’s farm, starting with three quarters of land, one bull and two cows. In 1947, Jim and Inga were married and Inga became the new school teacher at the Sentinel School working until Carol came along in 1951 and followed by Brian in 1954. In 1968, wanting to be closer to Medicine Hat, Jim purchased land at Pashley from his brother Alfred. Jim and Inga worked hard to establish a new ranch site. In 1980, they moved into Medicine Hat so that their son Brian and wife Donna could live on the ranch. Jim enjoyed living in town and was active in curling, golfing, bowling, playing cards, going to the Tiger hockey and Mavericks baseball games and he loved dancing. Jim and Harvey Good were two of the best dancers around! Living in town was handy to the ranch and to Brooks where he made his weekly business trips. For many years Jim and Inga were busy watching their six athletic grandchildren compete in a wide variety of sports events. Jim and Inga enjoyed travelling and went on various excursions and golf trips every winter. In 1999, they moved to a condo in Fairview Village and in 2009, to Norwood Grande and in 2014, Jim moved to Meadowlands. It was hard on Jim when Inga passed away on May 7, 2011. Being able to go down to play cards everyday in the Moose sure helped Jim to keep busy and gave him the opportunity to socialize with men and women of all different ages. This filled his days and kept him young. Jim was a sharp business man and had many successful endeavours in the agricultural industry. You could pretty well say that he didn’t completely retire until he quit doing the ranch books at the age of 83. He was a member of the Irvine Chinook Club, the Moose Lodge, the Elks, Connaught Golf Club and was on the committee that started the first Elkwater Rodeo. In the early eighties Jim and Harvey Good were on the curling team skipped by Bill Lastuka, that won the Canadian Senior Elks Championship. Jim was very fortunate to have good health until the age of 92 years. In his last year and a half in Meadowlands his health started to deteriorate and the days became long with more idle time. Jim was not use to this and it was a difficult adjustment for him. Jim had a good long life, made lots of friends and lived life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The funeral service will be held at the Cypress Center on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. A private family interment will take place prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Jim with a donation, may direct it to the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, (make cheques payable to MH & D Health Foundation) 666 5th Street SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 4H6 or online at http://www.InYourCommunity.ca.
